Migrating a Volume
The Migrate function is the same as Copy, except that when the copy is finished, all volume-server mappings are moved to the destination volume. The source volume is deleted. The copied data (and its mappings) now reside on the destination volume. Copy/Migrate first copies data from the source volume to the destination volume. Changes to the source volume while the copy is in progress are reflected in the destination volume. When Storage System Manager is finished with the copy, all volume-to-server mappings are moved to the destination volume. 1. In the system tree, select a volume. 2. From the volume shortcut menu, select Copy Copy/Migrate. The Copy/Migrate Volume window appears. 3. Select a destination volume a. To migrate data to an existing volume, select a destination volume from the list of volumes displayed. The destination volume cannot be smaller than the source volume. The destination volume cannot be mapped to a server. Click Continue. Complete the Copy/Migrate options: Specify a priority relative to other Copy/Mirror/Migrate and Replication operations. By checking Copy Historical Replay Information, you are copying the volume and all associated Replays. If you do not select this option, you exclude Replay data from being copied. Select or clear Delete Source Volume After Migration. Select or clear Reverse Mirror After Migrate. There are two ways to create Replays: 1. Create an on demand immediate replay [Manual one time] 2. Create a replay using Replay Profile [Scheduled & Recurring] Note: Although you can take immediate relay, Replays are best used by creating Replay profile, attaching it to a volume, and let storage center save backup data for volumes on a determined schedule.

Recovering a Replay
A replay can be recovered to restore lost or corrupted files or volumes. Lost or corrupted files: Replay should be mapped to the server and presented as a new drive Corrupted Volume: The original volume should first be unmapped. Then the replay should be mapped to the server and presented as an original drive. Note: This has the added advantage of retaining the original data for detailed analysis. 1. For testing purpose, delete some files or folders from the Compellent volume on the server for which a replay has been taken. 2. Select the VolumesClick on Replays Right click the Replay to be recoveredCreate Volume from Replay.

Data Progression
Data Progression is a licensed feature that allows the array to migrate data between tiers of storage. This frees, up valuable R-10 space (faster, more expensive disks) and migrates the less used data to lower Tiers (R-5 or 6, or slower less expensive storage) to optimize disk usage. You can also have tiers within tiers, by separating by raid level. You can have R-10 and R-5 tier 1 storage, and have Data Progression move data between the raid levels inside the same tier. An unlicensed Data Progression will not migrate data between tiers, only within the same tier.
Picture 10.1: Data Progression The Data Progression process runs once a day, determining migration based on block by block usage. Data Progression compares the activity of blocks versus the blocks surrounding them. The progression occurs once a day, by default at 7pm. It uses a 12 down, 3 up algorithm, meaning that the mean activity of a block has to be low for 12 consecutive days for it to progress to a lower tier, but only 3 days of elevated activity to return it to higher tier storage. Dell advises using the Recommended Storage profile. At this level, all writes come into tier 1 space, all replays are created in tier 3 space, and it allows Data Progression to maximize all tiers of drives to optimize performance and cost per disk. This setting has proven to be most efficient for the majority of Dell customers, but you can always use a different Storage Profile per volume created, or switch it to Manual Mode to manage the storage at a very granular level.

Enterprise Manager
Enterprise Manager is a management utility to be used in conjunction with the Storage Center interface to better manage your local array, or to manage multiple Dell Compellent Arrays in the same interface. The primary purpose of Enterprise Manager is configuring and managing replication, as well as reporting. It can be used for Storage and host management, but it is faster and more efficient to use Storage Center for adding hosts, creating LUNs, etc. Enterprise Manager is free, but still requires a license to install. This license is provided by your Dell Compellent engineer at the time of installation. Installation of Enterprise Manager will typically take place during your initial SAN installation.
Benefits: Identifies all local and remote Storage Center systems from within a single console Provides at-a-glance, comparable views of current aggregate capacity statistics and overall storage resource objects for all Storage Center systems Delivers standard storage management reporting summaries on performance, capacity, utilization, and replication Easily creates and manages replications from one system to another Accurately assesses storage resource utilization and costs Allocates storage costs per user, department, or customer Automatically identifies and reclaims Windows file space that is no longer in use
Components: Data Collector Gathers data and alerts from the array Database Where the data and alerts are stored. Supported Databases are MySQL 5.0, 5.1, MSSQL 05, 08, and 05 Express. Can also be saved in flat file format with a 30 day history. Clients The Client is the application that connects to the Data Collector and retrieves information about the Storage Center. The Client SW can be run from Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2. Enterprise Manager Server Agent This is a windows agent used to gather system information about Windows hosts and volume information. The Windows Space Recovery Tool is included in this package. Installation of the Server Agent on a Windows host will also allow that host to automatically register its HBAs with the Storage System.
Using Enterprise Manager is very similar to using Storage Center. The primary difference is the ability to manage multiple controllers or Multiple SANs simultaneously from the same instance.

Phone Home
Phone Home sends a copy of a Storage Center configuration to Dell Compellent Copilot Support to enable support of your system. The initial configuration is sent to Dell Compellent Copilot Support when your Storage Center system is installed. No actual data is sent, only configuration information about the system. A Phone Home event is initiated either manually or automatically when an event occurs. When a Phone Home event is initiated, the following information is sent: Configuration Event Logs Storage Reports Storage Inventory Reports Alerts Storage Center will receive: Component firmware upgrades Software version upgrades Updated files needed by Storage Center Note: To utilize Phone Home, ports 80 and 443, outbound only, need to be opened on both the *Firewall for Storage Center and Enterprise manager applications. Note: For SSH secure access; Port 22 must be opened outbound for Storage Center. *Firewall should be setup to allow outbound communication from both eth0 IPs and the virtual IP for the clustered controllers.
