A Profile
He established rapid and efficient tissue culture methods for large scale propagation of many commercially important cultivars of banana (Musa acuminata) through shoot multiplication. In vitro raised plants were produced on commercial scale at the Centre. The isozyme profiles during shoot regeneration in Musa acuminata cv. Dwarf Cavendish were reported besides evaluation of genetic stability through chromosome morphology and karyotype studies in the micropropagated plants. He reported regeneration of plantlets from callus cultures of Parthenium argentatum from stem explants and Crotolaria spp. from root hypocotyle and cotyledon explants. Micropropagation of elite female plants of Simmondsia sinensis (Jojoba) using nodal segments was also standardized. Dr. Das developed efficient protocols for in vitro plant regeneration via organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis from callus and cell suspension cultures to develop metal tolerance in Echinochloa colona . Professor Das standardized tissue culture protocols and conventional methods for large-scale propagation, cheap and inexpensive hardening and acclimatization procedures for several economically important plant species. The protocols are being used by commercial laboratories, nurseries and plant propagators for mass production of quality planting materials. Besides, the tissue culture laboratory offered opportunities for training of many scientists and technicians both at the state and national level.

biochemical aspects of 19 productivity, role of micro-organisms on plant growth and biomass yield. He made a comparative evaluation of some 31 promising fuel wood species for the biomass production potential under the prevailing climatic conditions of coastal Odisha. Dr Das studied the effect of plant density on the growth and biomass yield and developed prediction equations for estimation of above ground biomass of some fire wood species. He evaluated the biomass production potential of male, female and hermaphrodite plants of Casuarina equisetifolia and reported higher biomass yield in male plants compared to their female and hermaphrodite counterparts; males were identified for captive plantations. In order to popularise fuelwood plantation on marginal and wastelands with minimal input. Biofuel Research
Prof Das developed Biofuel Additives for Diesel Engines that when blended with diesel enhanced mileage of diesel run vehicles by 40 percent. The blended fuel helped in reduction of pollution and the engine temperature to possibly prevent wear & tear and enhance longivity of the engine. The recommended 10 percent replacement of petroleum diesel by bio-additive can help save the non 27 renewable fossil fuel & valuable foreign exchange. This technology can solve a host of other National problems like utilization of marginal/ waste/ barren land, rural employment generation, carbon credit, availability of biofertilizer etc. 28 29
