THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO BUYING YOUR MOBILE PHONE

MOBILE GUIDE

Dear Reader,
or some of us a mobile phone does much more than just calling and messaging. Its like our pocket computer, camera and music player. For others, basic features will suffice. Depending on what you want out of your phone, you can choose from a wide range of options. With mobile phones being improved so rapidly it can be hard to keep track of what the latest developments are and whether they are useful for us. Are the latest phones worth the price? The price of a mobile phone increases with the number of features it has, and manufacturers usually charge a bomb for newly introduced features. But whether a phone is worth the price or not depends on how important its features are to you, and how many of them you will use regularly. This Which? Right Choice guide will help you look at the best of the options available and make recommendations through our ratings. The best products in a category are marked by us as the Right Choice. Which? Right Choice is a monthly magazine that tests a range of products and services and brings you the results of our independent research. From home appliances to mobile phones and from telecom operators to airlines, we conduct the most comprehensive set of tests and surveys of any publication in India. We are associated with Which?, an organisation that has been safeguarding consumer rights in the United Kingdom and has been in print for over half a century. ABOUT WHICH? RIGHT CHOICE

Which? Right Choice was set up by Which?, a 55-year-old organisation based in Britain that publishes the flagship magazine Which? as well as a range of other titles covering subjects such as holidays, cars and finance. Which? is also a consumer organisation that campaigns for the rights of consumers. Which? Right Choice, the Indian magazine, brings a consumer offering that is independent, authoritative and rigorous. As the Indian market evolves and grows, giving the consumer an everincreasing variety of goods and services,

we believe our advice can help lp you navigate the complex set of choices. Independence is central to our consumer promise as we accept no advertising and carry no commercial content from providers of goods and services either directly or indirectly.

RESEARCH & TESTING

No other organisation investigates products as thoroughly as Which? and Right Choice. Our rigorous, independent expert tests cover more products and services than anyone else, allowing us to reveal the good and the not so good, helping you to make the Right Choice for you. By listening to consumer experiences we design our research to delve beneath advertising, uncovering how things really work so you can be confident that our recommendations stand out from the crowd. We dont stop there. Our independence allows us to name and shame poor products and services and we use our influence to drive changes on behalf of all consumers.

RIGHT CHOICE

LEGACY AND HERITAGE

Right Choice is an offshoot of Which?, an organisation that has been transforming the lives of consumers, giving them a platform to recognise their rights and causes. the Best Buy label to guide consumers. It was an instant success and is today an iconic label seen in stores all over. Within 10 years the magazine had 5 lakh subscribers.

LONDON, 1957
Which? was started in a disused garage in east London to offer people independent advice and comparative testing of the new consumer goods that were starting to appear in shops. There was little such advice around at the time. Many thought publishing such advice (and especially naming products) would be impossible because it would be unpopular with manufacturers.

EXPANDING THE GOOD WORK

Today, millions of subscribers in the UK and other parts of the world benefit from its independent advice. Which? now publishes over 10 magazines covering Cars, Computing, Holidays, Finance and Buyers Guides and Which.com a successful online platform. It is no surprise that Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of Britain says, The impact of your work has been profound. Your campaigns and magazines have transformed the way we live, improving products and services in the public and private sectors. I know that you will use this platform to achieve even more for consumers in the future.

SUCCESS COMES QUICKLY

As soon as Which? was launched, ten thousand members signed up in the very first month. In 1958 Which? introduced

SHOULD YOU BUY A SMARTPHONE?
Before buying an expensive smartphone you should think carefully about whether or not youll use its extra features, as they are essentially what youre paying a premium for dont expect the voice call quality, or reception to be much better than a regular phone. If youre certain that you just want a phone for voice calls and texting then it really isnt worth paying so much extra for a smartphone. There are many good quality budget phones you can buy, at a fraction of the price (see Budget phones, p30).

MOBILE GUIDE

SMARTPHONE FEATURES
Modern mobile phones can be used for far more than just making mobile phone calls almost all come with a built-in camera and music player, and most can now access the internet and send emails. Decide which mobile phone features youre likely to use and which you can do without. For example, if you love taking photographs but arent too bothered about accessing the internet then youll probably be best off with a camera phone. Remember to look carefully at what feature set each phone offers and be aware that you will probably have to make compromises. For instance BlackBerry smartphones are widely regarded as the best phones for business users, but dont expect them to offer the best entertainment features. Not all smartphones offer the same features, but below are the ones that most devices should be capable of.

HIGH-SPEED INTERNET ACCESS

A great deal of a smartphones functionality relies on it being able to access the internet, allowing you to browse web pages, access email and download apps and music.

1 2 3

MUSIC PLAYER
Nearly all smartphones should be able to play music files in the same way as a dedicated Mp3-player. However, be warned that the sound quality can often be inferior to a dedicated device.

CAMERA
Most smartphones are able to take pictures and record video. If these are features youll use often, make sure you check the camera quality, as it can vary quite considerably between different smartphones.

TOUCHSCREEN
Smartphone touchscreens were popularised by Apples iPhone and have since been used by many other smartphone manufacturers. There are two main types of smartphone touchscreens resistive and capacitive. Capacitive is the more advanced touchscreen technology and offers more accurate control. Touchscreens can be divisive when it comes to their usability. Some people find it awkward to type on a touchscreen keypad, while others would never think of going back to regular buttons. So its a good idea to try out a touchscreen phone before you buy one.

APPLICATIONS
Applications, or apps as they are often referred to, are a key feature of smartphones. They broaden the functionality of your phone, in a similar way to the software you buy for your PC. Different smartphone operating systems have access to different online stores where you can buy apps. So not all smartphones have access to the same apps. For instance, the iPhone uses Apples App Store, whereas Android-based phones access the Android Market.

HOW WE TEST MOBILE PHONES

When testing mobile phones, our expert team devise and carry out a series of tests designed to really put the mobile phones through their paces. For everyday use this includes making a call, storing numbers in the address book and handling missed calls. For models with built-in music players, we test the basic operation such as using and creating playlists, setting the volume and transferring music files. Since many mobiles have large colour screens, we assess how well batteries coped with playing games, taking pictures and using diary functions all of which drain power quicker. Our expert panel listens to the same three tracks on each phone to test the sound quality of its music player. Our experts listen both with the headphones supplied and, if they can be connected, with a second set that we supply. The panel checks for overall sound and for flaws such as distortion. We test out the cameras on the phones by taking pictures of test charts in three simulated light conditions: daylight, office light and home light. The charts include a rotating image to test how the camera copes with movement, and a scene which has elements of different resolution, colour and brightness. We then transfer the photos to a computer to rate the file size and print them out to assess the overall quality of the image.

MOBILE GUIDE

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

ANDROID
Android is popular with manufacturers because its open source software. Open source means that anyone can help to develop the software, without paying licence fees. This is unlike a closed source operating system such as Windows, which is developed only by Microsoft and its associates. Also, unlike most closed source operating systems, Android is completely free to use, so manufacturers, such as Samsung and HTC, dont have to pay anyone to include it on their phones. Android also sells so well because the smartphones that run it are generally much cheaper than the iPhone, while boasting very similar features. So if youre looking for a

budget smartphone, Android is a good option. The latest version of Android is Ice Cream Sandwich which sees features such as a new look interface, Google+ integration, improved multi-tasking and notifications and face Unlock facial recognition software that can be used to unlock the phone.

WINDOWS PHONE 7
In 2010 Microsoft released Windows Phone 7, which was intended as a dramatic revamp of its smartphone operating system business. Windows Phone 7 is very different from previous versions of Windows Mobile. You wont be able to update a Windows Mobile device to Windows Phone 7 you also wont have access to the Windows Phone 7 app Marketplace from an older Windows Mobile device. Windows Mobile devices are being phased out by Microsoft so if youre looking for a Windowsbased smartphone, get a Windows Phone 7 one, rather than one running Windows Mobile 6.5. Windows Phone 7 offers a much more intuitive and user-friendly experience, bringing Microsofts operating system more in line with the likes of the iPhone and Android.

BLACKBERRY OS 7
This newest BlackBerry operating system isnt very different from BlackBerry OS 6 but it does provide a new browser that claims to make web browsing up to 40% faster. Theres a new voice activated search feature and the ability to separate business and personal content with BlackBerry Balance. The OS is easy to use. And while it can download apps from BlackBerry App World, this doesnt offer as much choice as on the more popular operating systems.

iPHONE i0S 5
Apples iOS is the operating system used in all the versions of the iPhone and the iPad and the iPod Touch MP3 players. As a full operating system it can run third party applications and this makes the iPhone a powerful smartphone. Unlike Android OS, iOS isnt available on products outside of Apples range, so if you want to use it you will have to buy an iPhone. iOS gives users access to Apples App Store, which features over 500,000 different apps. It is estimated that 37% of these apps are free and the average price of the remaining apps is `170, and with such a variety available you are sure to find something that interests you.

SYMBIAN (Nokia)
Symbian has been used on nearly all of Nokias smartphones. Symbian has the same functions as other operating systems, like access to an app store, customisable homescreens, widgets, and the ability to sync emails. However, it has been criticised for not being as user-friendly as the iPhones iOS and Android, and for not having as good a selection of apps. The latest version, Symbian^3, is a big improvement from previous Symbian operating systems. It is more responsive and adds customised homescreens. Plus you can access downloads from the Nokia Ovi Store. But it is still not as fun or intuitive to use as Android OS or Apples iOS.

52% NOKIA X3-02
3,809 The X3-02 combines a touchscreen with a keypad. The keys are a decent size but the keypad has a fairly unusual layout, with the space key in the bottom right-hand corner. The phone runs on the Symbian S40 operating system. Sound quality on calls is fairly standard when its quiet, but deteriorated with background noise. Battery life is impressive with over 3.5 hours of talktime on a 3G network, and recharging takes just 1.5 hours. The phone has a 5Mp camera and picture quality is above average. The phone can access the internet thanks to its HSDPA (3.5G) and Wi-Fi connections but we found it difficult to use due to the small screen. Pros Reasonably priced Cons Short battery life online, sound quality issues

48% NOKIA C2-01

4,279 The small size means that on-screen icons can be hard to make out. It uses Nokias Symbian S40 operating system basic and easy to set up. Sound quality on calls is OK in good conditions, but it struggled when we tested it with loud background noise. Its battery is decent. We were able to get four hours of calls when we tested it on the 3G network with medium reception levels and recharging takes two hours and 50 minutes. The phone comes with a pretty standard 3.2Mp camera. In good conditions it takes reasonablelooking pictures, and can record functional video. Given its price this 3G phones internet browsing speed is reasonable. Pros 3G connectivity at a budget price Cons Basic video camera, no supplied memory card

If youre looking for a budget handset, here are some of the latest models. Their scores may not be exceptional, but, for basic tasks, these phones perform well enough

44% NOKIA C1-01

2,389 This tiny model weighs just 80g. The keys are cramped and the handset creaked as we pressed them. Sound quality on calls is pretty standard. The C1-01 has a very small internal memory of 64MB. Battery life is about average, helped by the fact that the phone only works on the less powerhungry GSM network. We managed three hours and 46 minutes of calls when we tested it with medium reception. The phone has a camera, but this is an extremely basic VGA model (0.3Mp resolution) that lacks an autofocus or flash. Without 3G or Wi-Fi, the Nokia C1-01 can access the internet only through the slower EDGE connection. Pros Cheap, lightweight Cons Poor features, no supplied memory card

42% SAMSUNG CH@T 335

5,140 The full Qwerty keypad is meant to make typing emails and texts quick and easy, but we found the keys a bit small. The simple menu makes it easy to navigate. Sound quality on calls is fairly average. However, the mouthpiece struggled when theres loud background noise. The phone can download apps from the Samsung Apps store, though these are basic. More impressively, it supports push email so you will receive emails straight away, rather than having to check periodically for them. Battery life on calls is impressive 462 minutes, although as the phone lacks 3G connectivity this was tested on the GSM network which uses less power. Pros Affordable, push email system Cons Fiddly keypad, low resolution screen

SAVE ON YOUR MOBILE BILL
You may be paying far more than necessary just because you havent looked at the most current talk plans from your provider. Most providers will help you choose the best plan for you based on your past usage.

VISIT YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER

SWITCH SERVICE PROVIDERS

Look at what other providers have to offer. Mobile number portability could be your way to better service.

Dont sign up for value-added services (such as flash messages) you dont need or use to bring down your monthly bill.

6 7 8

CUT OUT VALUE-ADDED SERVICES

SWITCH TO PER-SECOND BILLING

SWITCH TO PREPAID
Monthly rentals have been falling steadily, but prepaid lets you control how much money you spend.

If your calls tend to be short, switch to a package that charges you per second. If your calls are quite long, however, per-minute billing offers cheaper rates overall.

USE THE LANDLINE DONT DOWNLOAD

Its more economical to download that ringtone or wallpaper to your computer and transfer it to your phone. Mobile internet downloads can cost more than regular broadband.

When you have access to a landline, use it. Remember that you get a certain number of free calls on your landline connection every month.

CALL, DONT SMS

Sometimes you can save by having a short conversation instead of sending a stream of messages.

9 10

CALL AT OFF-PEAK HOURS

Some service providers offer low cost plans for calls during off-peak hours.

USE SMS PACKAGES

Why pay per SMS if you can pay less by buying a package? If you text a lot, a lump sum package for SMSes could be a real money saver.

Airtel, Vodafone topped in our 10-city satisfaction survey of mobile service providers, Idea outshone Reliance and Tata

OUR SURVEY
To find out how satisfied Indian mobile phone users are with their service providers, we conducted a 10-city survey in November 2010. Of the 3,024 respondents, 51% were male and 49% female. They were all between the ages of 18 and 51 and had been using a mobile phone for at least a year. We asked if they were satisfied with the network coverage, cost of using the phone, customer service, range of handsets, tariff options, accuracy and ease of understanding bills, and whether they would recommend their provider to a friend. Scores were generated based on their responses.

TOP SCORERS
75% AIRTEL
Airtel was the most used mobile e provider among mong our respondents, with a 29% share. It scored well on coverage, tariff plans and bill accuracy. Those who used it liked it because it offers a wide range of innovative plans. For instance, users can opt for up to two add-on connections, charges for all these numbers are included in a single bill, the activation fee for the add-ons is waived and call rates subsidised useful for parents who want a number for their children. But some respondents said Airtel repeatedly asked them for documents and bombarded them with promotional calls and SMSes.

74% VODAFONE
Vodafone, the operator of choice for 23% of respondents, spondents, had a customer score of 74%. It matched Airtel on network coverage, tariff plans and bill accuracy, but some users said they faced network problems sometimes. Vodafone subscribers said its postpaid plans were hassle-free and it had a large network of stores across India. There are 85 Vodafone mini stores in Delhi and 120 in Mumbai. Mini stores are small branches where you can sign up for a new connection, pay your bills and buy recharge coupons. As well as these, Vodafone also has larger outlets if you need more detailed assistance.

72% IDEA
Idea was the fourth most used mobile provider after r Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance. However, it outshone Reliance, with a customer score of 72%. While it fared well in most criteria, it fell short on the competitiveness of its tariff plans, compared with Airtel and Vodafone. Idea users said it had reasonable international roaming charges and good SMS schemes. For instance, Idea offers an SMS pack for `35, which lets you send 1,500 free local and STD messages in a month. On the downside, some users complained they received unwanted promotional calls from the provider.
