Title:- Analysis Of stresses on a Concrete Gravity Dam

Introduction:- A gravity dam is a solid structure, made of a concrete or masonry. The section of the gravity dam is approximately triangular in shape, with its apex at its top and maximum width at bottom.

Basic definitions Axis of the dam:- The axis of the gravity dam is the line of the upstream edge of the top. Length of the dam:- The length of the dam is the distance from one abutment to the other. Structural height of the dam:- it is difference in elevations of the top of the dam and the lowest point in the excavated foundation. Maximum base width:- it is the maximum horizontal distance between the heel and the toe of the maximum section of the dam in the middle of the valley.

Forces acting on a dam 1. Weight of the dam 2. Water pressure 3. Wind pressure 4. Earthquake forces

Given data:1. Youngs modulus:- 25Gpa 2. Poisons ratio for RCC:-(0.1 to 0.2)

Force applied:The pressure force is applied on the wall of the dam the level of water as shown in fig(1) the total water pressure calculated is 4209.03t i.e 41276484N

Boundary conditions:The bottom part of the dam is fixed i.e.. U1=U2=U3=UR1=UR2=UR3=0

Meshing:- The different trails have been done and the comparison has been done in below table(1)&(2) as well as the comparison shown in the figures below. workdone:1. In this report I performed the analysis of various stresses on the wall of the concrete gravity dam. 2. The analysis is carried in two different elemental shapes i.e quadrilateral and triangle 3. The different element shapes give the different results and also the different grain sizes. 4. During the analysis various forces have been considered which are acting on the walls of the dam. 5. The forces are calculated in tones and converted to newton as shown above. 6. From the analysis we can see that the maximum stress is acting in the bottom the apex of the dam.
