Nahmada hu wa nusali ala rasoolahil kareem, Amma baad, faoothobila hi minash shaytaanir rajeem. Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh, Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him and seek His help. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our evil deeds. Whomever Allaah guides cannot be led astray, and whomever He leaves astray, cannot be guided. I bear witness that there is no deity, no god, no object worthy of worship except Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. Last week we started a new series of khutub on the topic of one of the greatest forms of worship, at-Dua. We briefly discussed and focused on one ayah of the Quran where Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the Quran, in surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60:

And your Lord says: "Call on Me (Make dua to Me); I will (of a surety) respond to you. Verily those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter the Fire of Hell, humiliated. " (Quran 40:60) And we understood from this ayah as well as several hadith that dua is a form of worship. And just how with other forms of worship, it must be done purely for the sake of Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala and done according to the Quran and sunnah. We cannot simply make up our own rules for acts of worship similar to how you cannot stand up and say I am going to pray 7 rakat salah for Maghrib. We also realize from this ayah that making dua to Allah is a command. Not optional. And we briefly discussed how making dua implies and affirms tawhid (the Unification of Allah)in all 3 forms, namely: 1. in His Existence and Lordship, called tawhid al-Rububiyyah 2. in His right to be worshipped, called tawhid al-Uluhiyyah 3. and in His Perfect Essence and Attributes, called tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat

With all of this, it becomes obvious that dua to any creation of Allah is considered shirk. Allah says in surah al-Jinn, surah 72, ayah 20, what means: Say (O Muhammad): I make dua only to my Lord (Allah alone), and I associate none as partners along with Him (Quran 72:20) To make dua to other than Allah is pure shirk as it is associating partners with Allah, which is the one sin that Allah will not forgive. How is it associating partners with Allah? Because by making dua to other than Allah, we are attributing characteristics that only our Creator, Allah has, to the created. So those that make dua to a saint, a peer, or a wali, or a rock, or an idol, or to the sun, or the moon, or the fire, or to Issa ibn Maryam alayhis salaam, or even to Muhammad Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam; this person believes that these objects or people can hear him, or has eternal life, or is capable of responding to his dua, and has knowledge of his situation and can see the state that he is in, and has mercy upon him and has the power to grant him what he wishes. Yet, the perfection of all these attributes is only with Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us clearly in surah al-Fatir, surah 35, ayah 14, what means: If you invoke or call upon them, they hear not your call, and even if they were to hear (you), they could not grant your (request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And non can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything). (Quran
35:14)

Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala also tells us in surah al-Hajj, surah 22, ayah 12-13, what means: He calls besides Allah that which hurts him not nor profits him. That is a straying far away. He calls unto him whose harm is nearer than his profit: certainly, an evil patron and certainly an evil friend! (Quran 22:12-13) Is there a contradiction in this ayah? Allah says He calls besides Allah that which hurts him not nor profits him, and then says He calls unto him whose harm is nearer than his profit. That is because even though the person or object you are calling on cannot hurt you nor benefit you, by you calling on this person or object you are harming yourself; so the harm is nearer.

And Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tell us in surah al-Ahqaf, surah 46, ayah 5, what means: And who is more astray than one who makes a dua to other than Allah, who will not answer him until the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their duas to them? (Quran 46:5) Ill mention this final verse, even though there are more; Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala says in surah al-Muminun, ayah 117, what means: And whoever makes dua to (or worships) other than Allah, any other god, of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with His Lord. Surely, the disbelievers will not be successful. (Quran :117) It is very important to note here that regardless of what excuse or distorted logic we use to justify making dua to other than Allah, it will clearly constitute shirk. You find some people there are only calling on the pious and holy people. You find others using the concept of intercession, shafaah to justify this shirk. Others have an incorrect understanding of the concept of tabarruk, seeking blessings from an object, while others use the concept of tawassul (seeking a means of nearness to Allah). No matter what the reason is, no matter how well it is explained to someone, the ayat and hadith we have related proves beyond any doubt, that to call upon any living person, any dead person, or an angel, or a prophet, or a rock or stone, or any deity other than Allah; this is the essence of shirk. There is no difference of opinion on this. A person that does this, has removed himself from the fold of Islam and know that this is no different from prostrating to an idol. You may be thinking to yourself that this is obvious, I know this. If you are thinking this, then say Alhumdullilah! Because Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala has guided you. But I am sure you are aware of many people, and unfortunately this is rampant amongst many Muslim societies and cultures, where you hear them call out Ya Ali Madat! or O Abd al-Qadir al-Jilanai, save me! or O Badawi! O Tijani! O Rifaai! Guide me, help me, give me risq, cure me, give me a righteous child SubhanAllah! These people who they are calling may have been very righteous, very pious and very good people, and May Allah protect them all. But

the person calling on them is committing shirk! They cannot hear you. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala confirms this in the Quran as we have already mentioned. Another tragedy with Muslims in Muslim countries especially is graveworshipping. This is haram. People say we are not worshipping them. We are only using these dead saints as intercessors, as intermediaries to come closer to Allah. But this is exactly what the idol worshippers at the time of Muhammad Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said. They worshipped their idols to come closer to Allah. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us what could mean: Say, [O Muhammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?" They will say, "To Allah ." Say, "Then will you not remember?" Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?" They will say, "[They belong] to Allah ." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?" Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?" They will say, "[All belongs] to Allah ." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"
(Quran 23:84-89)

Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala also tells us what could mean: Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever. (Quran 39:3) And: And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, " Allah ." Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah ? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?"

Say, "Sufficient for me is Allah ; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers." (Quran
39:38)

If anyone of us is involved in this, or knows anyone that is involved in this, it is clear that we need to ask Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to forgive us and to guide all of us. We ask Allah to rectify our situation. We ask Allah to purify our dua and allow us to remain steadfast and ask only and only from Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala.

help. (Quran 1:5)

It is You we worship and You we ask for

Here I want to talk to all of you about a very important matter. A matter which we find many Muslims seem to take very lightly. A Muslim is a person who worships none but Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala, the Creator of absolutely everything that exists, the One who has no needs, the One who is not dependent upon anything, the One who is unlike any of His creations. If you truly believe this, then you must realize that every other religion that exists, and even the nonexistence of religion, all rely upon some form of associating partners with Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala, or outright denying the existence of Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala. Naudhubillah. We need to realize that as Muslims, we have our own identity. We are unique in our belief. We are very different than everyone else. And a system of belief is meaningless unless you put it into practice. Knowledge is useless unless you put it into practice. Two days ago was the Christian celebration of kufr. A celebration where they ascribe a son to Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us very clearly in the Quran what could mean: They say, "Allah has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. (Quran 2:116) Yet we have Muslims who have no problem congratulating them as they commit this crime. Muslims ask what is wrong with it? I dont believe that Jesus was the son of God, no problem. Muslims ask but they say Eid Mubarak to us on our holiday. We are just being nice to them, what is the problem?.

Document1

The problem my dear brothers and sisters in Islam is that we are losing our Islam. We are losing our Tawheed. We are losing the Oneness of Allah, the most fundamental concept which makes us Muslim. We must be nice, to absolutely everyone, Muslim and non-Muslim. Human and non-Human. But being nice does not mean we compromise Islam. Just as you and I would not congratulate someone who commits Zina, fornication, just as you and I would not congratulate someone who commits murder, just as you and I would not congratulate someone who terrorizes people, just as you and I would not congratulate any criminal, how then can we congratulate someone when they commit the biggest crime that exists, a crime that accuses the Creator? They are cursing your Allah and instead of defending Allah, we find it so easy to congratulate them. It doesnt matter if you say Merry Christmas or if you say Happy holidays or you say Seasons greetings. They all have the same meaning and we all know that very well. You can play with the words all you want, but you know, and I know, that we make up other phrases to try and deceive Allah. We should be telling them directly saying, I dont celebrate Christmas. We worship only the Creator, not the creation. Then we Muslims who have no problem making these statements and congratulating them on cursing our Allah, we seem to wonder, how can we have Muslims who put up a tree in their house and give gifts and do many other things associated with Christmas. Because 1 or 2 or 3 generations ago, those very people had no problem saying happy holidays and merry Christmas. And now today, they have no problem in celebrating along side with them. New Years eve and New Years day is coming up. And as we find year after year, we will find again this year, Muslims going out to celebrate and congratulate each other Happy New Year. Now you may be thinking, SubhanAllah, he has a problem with new years as well? Or you may be thinking, well Muslims have the new Hijri year, so what is wrong with this or that? I ask you a simple question. Who do you follow? Who do you model your life after? What is your goal in this life?

Document1

Why do we follow everyone and everything that is opposite to what we find in the life of the most perfect Human every created Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam? Why do we want to find alternatives to everything that other people do? They have happy new year, so we should have happy new Hijri year. Why? Didnt the sahaba know the new year was starting every year? Do we find any reports that they did this? Yet we want to emulate others. A day to be happy. A day to reflect. A day to look forward to another year. We are Muslims. You should be happy everyday. You should be thanking Allah everyday for everything. You should be reflecting every day. You should be looking forward to a new day every day. And just in case you didnt know, News Years day is dedicated to the Roman god Janus. Their alleged god of gates and doors. And in case you didnt know, the month January is named after this false god Janus. And just in case you didnt know, even the Christians of medieval Europe abolished the new year celebrations because it was considered pagan and unchristian like. But for us, Muslims ask, what is the problem with that? No problem. The Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: Whoever imitates a people is one of them. Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4031; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood My dear brothers and sisters, isnt it time we practiced Islam instead of just calling ourselves Muslim? Isnt it time that we take pride in our religion and its rulings, and that we learn and then call others and convey to them the religion of Allaah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala? I ask Allah to forgive us our mistakes. I ask Allah to guide us all to the straight path, the path that Allah loves. I ask Allah to save us from sins and the evil consequences. I ask Allah to rectify our affairs and make this dunya easy for us. I ask Allah to make us of those that enter Jannah without reckoning. Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, 'ash-hadu 'an laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta, 'astaghfiruka wa 'atoobu 'ilayka.

Types of Dua Moving on; When we look at the Quran and sunnah, we come to realize that there are two types of dua. The first is which most people are familiar with, known as dua al-masalah, the dua of asking. This is when a person asks to be given something that is of benefit to him, or asks that some harm be removed from him. For example Rabbana atina fidunya hasanatanw wa fil akhiratee hasanatanw wakeena azabunaar. We are asking Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to give us good in this world, and good in the hereafter, and to save us from the Hell-Fire. The second type of dua is known as dua al-ibadah, the dua of worship. This type of dua is included in every act of worship we do. Every praise we mention for Allah and every prayer we perform is implying that we are saying O Allah! I am doing this act of worship because you are All-Mighty and All-Powerful! You are the only one that deserves all types of praise! O Allah, accept this act from me!. So for example when we say SubhanAllah, or Alhumdullilah, or perform salah, or gives zakat, or fasts; these are all examples of dua al-ibadah. From this we can say there are 4 categories of people. The first are those that combine both types of dua, al-ibadah and al-masalah, and do it for Allah only. An example of this combined effort can be seen in Surah Fatiha, surah 1, ayah 5, what means: You (alone) do we worship, and You alone do we seek help from. (Quran 1:5). The second category are those that perform both forms of dua, but not to Allah. These are not Muslims as they are calling on false deities or not calling on anything such as the atheists, communists or agnostics. The third category are those that practice dua al-ibadah, for example performing salah and doing dhikr, but ignores dua al-masalah, and never asks of Allah. Either because they are lazy, or because they have incorrect beliefs that we should be satisfied with what Allah has decreed and not ask for anything. This is a deviation and a serious mistake. Allah has commanded us to ask of Him. Allah can give us anything. We even find that all prophets without exception made dua to Allah.

Document1

The fourth category are those that practice dua al-masalah, always ask of Allah, but ignore dua al-ibadah, for example they do not fast, they do not perform salah, or do not pay the zakat. This is clearly someone who is selfish and is only striving to satisfy themselves in this world. Unfortunately, there are many Muslims today that are like this, where you hear statements like it is the intention that counts, and use this as an excuse to leave worshipping Allah. The one who does this, is like Iblis, Satan himself. He was expelled from Paradise because he left dua al-ibadah out of arrogance, but then he made dua to Allah, dua almasalah to allow him to live until the Day of Judgement. And Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala granted him his dua. We will end with an ayah from the Quran where Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in surah al-Baqarah, surah 2, ayah 200-202: There are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us (Thy bounties) in this world!" but they will have no portion in the Hereafter. (2:200) And there are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and defend us from the torment of the Fire!" (2:201) To these will be allotted what they have earned; and Allah is quick in account. (2:202) (Quran 2:200-202) May Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala help us and guide us to act upon what has been said and to make dua only to Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala as he deserves and as we need. Any good from this talk is from Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala and any shortcomings or mistakes are from my own weakness. We ask Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to make us of those that enter Jannah without reckoning and to ease our situations in this dunya. Ameen. Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, 'ash-hadu 'an laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta, 'astaghfiruka wa 'atoobu 'ilayka.
