SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA AND THE BERLIN CONFERENCE

Africa before Imperialism In the mid 1800s African people were divided into hundreds of ethnic and linguistic groups. These groups spoke more than thousand different languages. Slavery trade began in Africa. Europeans only started conquering the borders of Africa before the 1800s. What is the Scramble for Africa? What is the Scramble for Africa? Scramble for Africa is used to describe the claiming of African territory by half a dozen European countries. When? The Scramble began in the late1870s, reached its peak in late 1880s and gradually became less over the first decade of the 20th century. Why? There are several reasons why Europe colonized Africa. First Reason: Europe wanted more power so to gain power they decided to colonize parts of Africa. This colonization made many Europeans the owners of slaves. Second Reason: Due to the industrial revolution Africa was rich in natural resources such as gold, copper, rubber and coco beans. This colonization made many Europeans the owners of slaves. The Europeans wanted their natural resources such therefore they wanted to colonize Africa. Third Reason: Economical, social and political forces accelerated the drive to take over land in all parts of the globe. Since the Europeans believed that they had a strong cultural background they worked together to colonize Africa. Then began the Berlin conference. What was the Berlin conference? The Berlin conference also known as the Berlin West conference was a meeting in Berlin, Germany of representatives of 14 European countries

and the United States between 1884 and 1885 to deal with matters relating territorial claims in Africa. Which countries were involved? Half of the countries including US were only invited to help out rival claims. The seven countries who were involved were: Spain Great Britain Portugal Italy Belgium France Germany The results: France has the most amount of land and this area is independent. But, how much land the countries owned does not show that they have conquered Africa. Consequences of the Berlin conference. Positive 1. African contacts with Europeans brought formal education into the region. 2. Europeans got land and many resources which they could use which was a positive impact for them. Negative 1. Tax was given to Africans. 2. Racism- Europeans and Africans started discriminating between the whites and blacks. 3. Africans lost a lot of their lands. 4. They also lost their independence. 5. African culture changed entirely. An example of this would be the change in their native language. Many Africans refused to change their language to the Europeans. In spite of this many Africans had started speaking french. African lands became European colonies.

There are many long term effects which can still be seen today. So, this was the scramble for Africa and the Berlin Conference. Thank You! By Nethra 8E Purple
