A moving rail car of mass m0, when empty is loaded by dropping sand vertically into it from a stationary chute at the rate of q = dm/dt. At the same time, however, sand is leaking out through the floor of the car at the lesser rate q. a) Determine the magnitude of the horizontal force P required to keep the car moving at a constant speed v while being loaded. b) Determine the magnitude of the force P as a function of time required to keep the car moving at a constant acceleration while being loaded.

The truck carries a spool with a mass of 100 kg, a radius of 0.9 m and a radius of gyration of rg = 0.6 m. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the spool and the truck bed are s = 0.15 and k = 0.1 respectively. a) Determine the angular acceleration of the spool if it is not tied down on the truck and the truck begins to accelerate at 3 m/s2. b) At what acceleration of the truck is sliding of the spool impending (i.e. about to happen)?

Two uniform cylinders, each of mass 6 kg and radius r = 120 mm are connected by a belt as shown. Knowing that the initial angular velocity of cylinder B is 30 rad/s counterclockwise, a) Determine the distance through which cylinder A will rise before the angular velocity of cylinder B is reduced to 5 rad/s,

The rectangular plate has sides of length 2a , a width of length a and a mass m. It is moving on a smooth horizontal surface with a constant velocity (of its centre of mass ) of v0 and constant angular velocity 0. a) Determine the new motion of the plate just after its corner strikes the stationary peg P given that the impact is perfectly plastic (i.e. e = 0) b) Determine the new motion of the plate just after its corner strikes the stationary peg P given that the coefficient of restitution is e = 0.6

A 9 kg uniform cylinder with a radius of 150 mm can roll without sliding on an incline of 15 and is attached to a spring AB, having spring constant of 800 N/m, as shown. a) If the center of the cylinder is moved 15 mm down the incline and released, determine the period of vibration and the maximum velocity of the centre of the cylinder. b) If a periodic force P = Pm sin ft, where Pm = 10 N and f = 5 rad/s, is applied at the centre of the disk in the down-slope direction, determine the amplitude of the displacement down the incline. c) What is a critical damping coefficient and what is its value for the system described in part a)?
