Poverty survey in Gangodawila.

The area that is focused in order to carry out this poverty survey is gangodawila area in nugegoda. When we deciding on this area for this purpose we mainly concerned about the income distribution disparity that is so crucial factor in such urban areas.as university students we spent near 5 years in this area and most of the time we have observed that while thousands of rich people spending very comfortable lives, at the same time some of people are suffering from extreme poverty without even fulfilling their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education and health for their survival. So as a responsible party we found that it is our duty to give our attention to such people in this area and give our maximum support to them to develop their lives in to satisfactory level. We are hoping to get financial support from some sponsors who are going to give their kind favor for our target group. The main purpose of this survey is to determine the living standard of people in gangodawila area based on their income, expenditure, literacy, sanitary and standard of living and study the nature and complexity of the poverty in that area in order to reach following objectives. To determine main source of income and expenditure of households. To asses and determine the quality of their lives. To determine the characteristics of poverty and identify the people in greatest need. To identify major inadequacies that should be satisfied. To identify resource availability and unused resources in this area. To identify the support we can provide to reduce poverty level and increase their standard of living. Throughout this project we intend to give our kind assistance to our target group of people in order to reduce their poverty in several ways. Mainly we are not going to focus on only income poverty , rather we are hoping to increase their standard of living considering several dimensions such as literacy and sanitary. Therefore at the end of this project we hope that they can increase their standard of living in to a considerable extent.

Survey Methodology
Sample We expect to use quantitative and qualitative methods for this survey. This Survey uses a convenient sampling survey method for both quantitative studies. Sample size is 50 families and Significance level 5% Questionnaire In order to identify demographic, social and economic characteristics of households the questionnaires were designed consisting of following modules for the quantitative survey.

Data Collection and Processing The survey field work is expect to be carried out on 2nd and 3rd of November by group members consisting of 10 students. While Quantitative data will be gathered through Questionnaire, Qualitative data will be gathered through individual interviews and focus group discussions. Gramasevaka of Gangodawila area will provide the assistance to select and find the selected households. Further group of Villagers who helped us with giving information regarding this area initially will also join with us throughout the data collection process. The questionnaire were checked for completeness, internal consisting and correction of coding. The main indicators of poverty, the poverty headcount, the poverty severity index, poverty gap index, Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve will be estimated to the measure the poverty level. Limitations of the Survey Insufficient time frame for a reliable study. Financial limitations. Difficulty of approaching to the target group.

Alternative Plan We expect to launch this poverty survey in Udugama, Galle Area If we will fail to collect information and carryout this project in this area. If we will be unable to collect information for a satisfactory level due to above limitations and other unexpected circumstances we expect to use this alternative plan. Budget A budget of 50000 Rupees is expect to be used for this poverty survey. Some of sponsorships are expected to be use in order to fund this project.
