On JDE: Nucleus has found that, as a result of key investments in usability and specific vertical functionality, JD Edwards continues to both attract new customers and drive existing customer upgrades and consolidation onto later versions of EnterpriseOne. On PeopleSoft: Nucleus has reclassified PeopleSoft as an Expert (from the Leader position in the previous report). Nucleus defines the vendors in Expert as having heavily invested in functional and industry-specific capabilities. Specific comments include: Although Nucleus has had little visibility into customers that have adopted or are planning to upgrade to these latest versions, Oracle publicly claims that 68 percent of the active PeopleSoft installed base has already adopted PeopleSoft 9.1. The 9.2 user interface looks dramatically different from the UI experience of customers on previous versions, reflecting the investments Oracle has made in improving usability. PeopleSoft Update Manager is the other interesting innovation Oracle is pushing with customer to help them take advantage of new PeopleSoft functionality on the roadmap with less disruption and change management investment.

Leaders, under Nucleuss definition, exhibit the following qualities: Vendors in the Leaders quadrant have invested in both functionality and usability features that are likely to deliver the greatest potential returns. These vendors have both diverse and comprehensive product offerings, which enable organizations to maximize ROI, and the resources to help organizations deploy large-scale applications. Experts, under Nucleuss definition, exhibit the following qualities: Vendors in the Experts quadrant have invested in deep functional capabilities that, by nature, make the application more complex and thus require more training and expertise to use than Leaders. These vendors invest in industry-specific capabilities to provide bestofbreed functionality in specific application areas for unique market verticals. They have invested in robust and complex functionalities that typically require additional consulting, training, or expertise resources when compared to Leaders.

Both SAP Business By Design and SAP Business One were named Facilitators. Nucleuss definition of Facilitators includes this statement: applications may also lack the deeper functionalities required by more sophisticated users.
