WHATS GOING ON AT WWC: We love YOU here at WWC! We have had a wonderful start to the year and want to share in our excitement. Please mark your calendars for an orientation that focuses on balance. Our first scheduled orientation in on February 22nd at 10 am. Class day/times, etc., will be determined at this time. This is an educational class designed to help you specifically with any balance issues and to start off the year feeling like a new you. Please contact us if you are interested in attending. We are here to help. This is a FREE introductory/orientation class for you Another great opportunity that has been presented at WWC has been the publication MDNews in the Greater Kansas edition. Dr. Williamson has graced us with another amazing article that has been published in MDNews. Please refer to the MDNews website or ask us for a copy when you stop by We have been fortunate enough to have an intern from Wichita State Universitys Exercise Science undergraduate program. Kristina has been a wonderful addition. Please help us welcome her. Jackie and Kristina have developed a new testing protocol at WWC. This protocol is a combination of screening/assessment tests to help us design your exercise prescription program. Of the 15 or so tests, there will be 3-5 tests for each and every person that walks into the "center". We will begin with existing clients at no cost but soon will schedule those that have been referred to us at a much reduced price for our "kick-off". These tests will be repeated after three - six months of working-out to show progress. There are few, if any, other fitness centers in the Wichita area offering such a comprehensive protocol that is scientifically based and administrated.

A WORD FROM WENDY

Fabulous February is here...can you believe it? I say fabulous because I am so excited about several things... The exercise testing (assessment/screening) has been a dream of mine for years. I have nationally taught movement screens testing and that is still very much needed. However, these tests encompass ALL people. We will have testing opportunities for everyone who walks into our "center". I am elated. The pre-tests will give us a baseline and then our programming will determine via a post-test if we quantitatively are making progress. In other words, it won't be a guess, or just a resistant training weight change, but a truly score- able test result. We will begin promoting RESULTS BASED TRAINING here at WWC. Secondly, I have never seen a staff that has come together so well. Carmen and Jackie complement each other and truly have their client's best interest. I am very grateful. When my family health issue have arisen, I have been able to "go" and feel very confident my clients are in good hands. Please keep them in mind if you are not currently training with us. You won't be disappointed. Kristina, WSU intern, has been fabulous. She also helped us with the Parkinson's Research Study last fall. Don't forget Betty Turner is available for massages. We all love Betty and so will you. Remember the referral program we are promoting. Your referrals mean the world to me(us) and knowing you have voiced your recommendation, gives the recipient a voice of confidence in us as well. To those who have recommended us in the past, we are very, very grateful, thank you. Lastly, dark chocolate....there are some wonderful benefits...flavenoids for one. Just don't eat the whole box of chocolates in one setting this Valentine's Day. Please come by and see us anytime at WWC. I love seeing long LOST friends and new friends. : )

US CANCER DEATHS DECLINE AGAIN

Cancer is a very real reality and silent killer throughout the United States and the world. We are very aware of the devastation and it hits home for us here at WWC. Fortunately the rate of cancer deaths among Americans continues to decline, according to a new report. Over the last 20 years, the overall risk of dying from cancer has dropped 20 percent, researchers found. The fastest decline in cancer death risk has been among middle-aged black men, for whom death rates have dropped by about 50 percent, the study authors report. We continue to make progress against cancer, said report co-author Ahmedin Jemal, vice president for surveillance and health services research at the American Cancer Society. This progress is largely because of better prevention, screening and treatment, Jemal said.

Jemal said most of the progress has been made in colon, breast and prostate cancer. These cancers can be screened for and, when caught early, have better outcomes, he said. In addition, decreased smoking has reduced the number of lung cancers, Jemal said. Jemal, however expects a brighter future as screening increases as more Americans get access to health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Not having insurance is the biggest barrier to screening, he explained. Dr. Anthony DAmico, chief of radiation oncology at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston believes that these declines are the result of better screening, especially screening for prostate cancer. In addition, new treatments are reducing deaths, he said.

For men, prostate, lung and colon cancer will make up half of all newly diagnosed cancers. Prostate cancer along will account for about one-quarter of the cases, the researchers estimate. Among women, the most common cancers will be breast, lung and colon cancer. Taken together, these will account for half of all cases. Breast cancer alone is estimated to account for 29 percent of all new cancers. From 2006 to 2010, cancer rates dropped 0.6 percent per year among men while remaining stable among women. During the same time, death rates from cancer dropped by 1.8 percent per year among men and 1.4 percent per year among women, the investigators found.

SOMETIMES YOU NEED MORE THAN RECESS

I remember counting down the minutes and even seconds to when the teacher said Line UP! Time for recess! It gave you opportunity to run around with your friends and smell the afternoon air while the sun warms your face. It was the joyous time of the day when we could take a break from the busy school schedules and spelling tests. My favorite time of the day. Unfortunately as we grow up, recess goes away. I am blessed enough to be able to enjoy my own recess at Williamson Wellness Center with the lovely Victoria. Victoria has been coming to WWC since mid-November. She is twelve years old but carries herself like she is about 16. This young lady always comes to the center with a smile on her face and a flower in her hair. I get to hear about the hustle and bustle of 6th grade life and if we can remember one more digit of pi. The real reason that I am getting to work with Victoria is that she is also an avid dancer and up and coming ballerina. The only set back from being able to achieve the ever so coveted point shoes is a pesky position called the splits.

I am sure many of you can relate to the degree of difficulty that the splits require. Myself, I cant imagine. With that being said, there has been research done about how to achieve this position and at the end of the day it is all about practice. Her practice consists of the playground. While other kids are worried about who is going to swing higher, Ms. Victoria is hard at work stretching and training.

Victoria visits WWC twice a week and we stretch and work on different positions to greaten the chances of her reaching her goal. She has worked incredibly hard and I am proud to say that earlier in the month she received her point shoes. We continue to work together so she is comfortable in her ability. Congratulations Victoria on your achievements and we are proud of you here at WWC. I look forward to see what the future holds.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

When you feel like quitting: think about why you started.- fitspirationforlife.tumblr.com DARK CHOCOLATE VS. MILK CHOCOLATE
Tis the season! Chocolate may not be such a guilty pleasure after all. If you choose dark chocolate -- chocolate made with more than 60 percent cocoa -- over milk chocolate or white chocolate, it may provide a number of health benefits. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate eaten along with milk do not provide the same benefits. This doesn't mean you should eat unlimited amounts of dark chocolate, however -- it's still high in calories, and can contribute to weight gain if you regularly eat too much. Components Cocoa, which is used to make both milk and dark chocolate, contains flavenoids called flavan-3-ols, epicatechins and procyanidins, which act as antioxidants in the body. The higher the concentration of cocoa in the chocolate, the higher the amount of flavenoids present in the chocolate. Dark chocolate contains a small amount of sugar and vanilla along with cocoa liquor, cocoa butter and cocoa powder, while milk chocolate contains these ingredients along with milk and more sugar. Considerations Flavenoids may help to lower blood pressure, decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lower blood clot risk, improve cognitive performance and improve mood, according to the University of Michigan Health System. It is also to note that flavenoids may also keep your blood vessels flexible and free of plaque, and lower your risk for certain cancers, including skin cancer. Recommendations Dark chocolate should be consumed in moderation. Although the fat contained in chocolate consists mostly of types that don't raise cholesterol, dark chocolate still contains a lot of fat and calories. Limit chocolate consumption to 1 oz. per day, and choose chocolate with at least 60 percent cocoa content, recommends the University of Michigan Health System. The higher the percent of cocoa solids, the more beneficial compounds you'll consume. Choose dark chocolate that contains cocoa butter, not other types of fat such as hydrogenated oils.
