New developments for 2012

Paul Ekman approved courses now part of an International MSc

Paul Ekman core courses have now been recognised as part of a MSc degree in Forensic Emotion Awareness that has been designed to develop expertise in reading emotions and truth/lies in others! The Paul Ekman approved core courses:

Emotional Skills and Competences(ESaC) and Evaluating Truthfulness and Credibility (ETaC)

now earn 20 credits against the 60 credits needed for the first year of the new 180 credit MSc that will be launched in September 2012.(*see note to right for those who haven't attended these courses). Members of the Paul Ekman website who have already attended one or both of these courses, and have passed the end test, will be given priority onto the pilot programme which is designed for busy professionals by being part-time and delivered in a flexible format using online and offline media plus two 3-day residentials (in

the UK for the pilot...other international venues for later courses) to cover the remaining 40 credits. The full first year includes:

Emotional Skills and Competences (or credit exemption) Evaluating Truthfulness and Credibility (or credit exemption) Investigative Interviewing and Conversation Management Face and Emotion - the biology of the face Emotions, the Brain and the Autonomic Nervous System Mindfulness and Attentiveness.

The second year involves four 3-day residentials, along with the online learning, and goes into more depth in all these topic areas, drawing on the latest research in Emotional Intelligence, Deception Detection, Forensics, Taxonomy in Body Language and Voice, Linguistics, Social/Cultural variables in Non-Verbal Communication and the role of Technology to support real-time judgements about what others are thinking and feeling. Year three is a research project/dissertation carried out in a context relevant for delegate career paths and interests this may be in law enforcement, security, medicine, sales/purchasing, negotiation/arbitration, therapy/counselling, coaching and training/education, leadership/management/influence or any other Student Initiated focus. You need a degree (2.2) to access the MSc though we are keen to attract professionals from across the globe from a wide range of sectors and so will accept those who have significant experience who can demonstrate through an interview (face to face or Skype) that they have the motivation and academic capability to succeed on a high level academic programme like this. Costs are estimated at around 3900 for year one for those who have completed ETaC and ESaC (7500 for those who haven't). Year 2 and 3 are expected to be around 5900 each year. Prices exclude accommodation and are subject to registration/certification costs and tax for some applicants. Application forms will be sent out later in January. If you wish to apply please let us know here.

Darwin Labortory A new laboratory to support the MSc, research and teaching and learning is currently being built and we are interested in partnering with academics and equipment/software specialists who can contribute to and/or use such a facility. Please note we are only developing technology that will support REAL TIME assessments by trained humans as part of our quest to increase the ability of humans to diffentiate between lies and truth and to identify real emotions in self and others. The human average is around 54% - no better than chance. Our trained delegates are currently reaching 90% without technology and we are pushing above this level. The Darwin Lab is being constructed at the Paul Ekman International headquarters in Manchester. Please contact us here if you are interested in this.
