Brumfields Gallery May 10 - July 5

Jacquline Hurlbert has been a popular artist in the Pacific Northwest for several years and Brumfields Gallery is excited to be hosting their second show of work by this prolific painter and ceramicist. The show will feature Hurlberts newest work, opening on May 10th and running through July 5th. The pieces are striking, featuring the detailed figures that have come to dominate her work. Each piece is heavily layered, both physically and metaphorically, with rich tones and textures, iconography, and symbolism.

Her pieces communicate a non linear narrative beyond representation or pure aesthetics. She has created a visual vocabulary of symbolism. This personal language enables her to explore her sense of self, how she perceives she is judged by others, and the struggle for acceptance as an ongoing journey. She illustrates her vulnerability in a courageous carnival of color, good humor, and charm. Characters conceived to represent difficult aspects of her self become familiar friends with which she plays. There is a celebratory joyfullness about her work. She writes, Coming up for air, thats how I feel. Ive had a growing number of creative ideas and desires that have been submerged deep in the layers of my psyche and now they want their voices to be heard. This new voice is a culmination of my past knowledge, ideas, and techniques meeting up with my present desire to express myself freely and fully, without fear or hesitation. The notion of reworking over past thoughts and inclinations and the truth that these formative elements are never truly obliterated are both concepts that also inform Hurlberts artistic process. These past histories are important to the way in which the artist develops her content and imagery. She will rework a piece many times, often resulting in an entirely different image than that which initially inhabited her consciousness. These layers of unseen narrative may only be fully known to the artist. For us, as the viewers, we are enthralled by a surface that hints at hidden secrets behind the veil. Jacquline Hurlbert first moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1993, where she currently works as a professional artist in Oregon. She earned her Bachelors degree in Art with honors from the University of Nebraska and later her masters degree in Sculpture and Ceramics from California State University. Her work is frequently shown across the Pacific Northwest and Southwestern states. The show will open on Saturday, May 10 at Brumfields Gallery and run from 7 9 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature a no-host bar provided by 13th Street Pub & Grill.
