Additional Puerto Rico Boards

These six additional boards are designed to be used with the Puerto Rico board game (published by Alea, Ravensburger and Rio Grande Games) to reduce the time taken to set up the game. The 3, 4 and 5 player boards were created by slith. The 2 player board was originally created by Carrotteer and is to be used with the official Alea 2 player modified rules. The two 6 player boards are based on kenjohns rules for 6 players. Thanks to torbjhe for permission to use the excellent politician and 9 space good ship images which I have used in the 6 player boards.

Printing Information
Each of the 6 boards should be printed on A4 sized paper or cardboard. Use borderless printing if possible. If you cant do borderless printing, do not scale the pages, simply print them with the borders cropped. If using an inkjet printer and photo paper, then I recommend using a high quality satin finish photo paper. If you can print directly onto thick satin or glossy cardboard, that is even better. Printing on both sides of the paper cardboard will allow you to print all six boards onto just two boards to save space in your Puerto Rico box.

Instructions
Instead of using the role cards supplied with the Puerto Rico game, the additional boards are meant to be used along with 5 uniquely coloured player tokens. These are used to indicate which role a player is selecting on a players turn. One of each of the 5 colours of meeples from one of the Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne games work perfectly as player tokens. (For 6 players you could use Alhambra or Carcassonne with the Inns & Cathedrals expansion.) You can of course continue to use the role cards supplied with the game if you wish. To set up the game when using the additional boards and player tokens: Place the appropriate board, based on the number of players in the game, to the left of the board that is supplied with the Puerto Rico game. When using an additional board there is no need to use the trading house, colonist ship, cargo ships or the role cards that are supplied with the game the additional board replaces all of these. Each player takes one of the player tokens and places it in front of them. Decide which player will go first and hand them the governor card. The steps indicated under preparation, written on the left side of the board, serve as a reminder of the setup instructions from the rules, and should be carried out. The components listed under manifest are an aid to players that indicate the number of each of the various components used in the game.

The game is ready to begin! On each players turn they place their player token on the role that they wish to use that turn. At the end of each round, after everyone has had a turn at placing their player token on one of the roles, remember to put 1 doubloon on each unused role, before each player takes back their player token and the governor card is passed onto the next player to begin a new round.

Additional Instructions for 6 Players

To play with 6 players you will need additional components including a player board, quarries, plantation tiles, goods, vp chips, colonists, production buildings and small violet buildings. The easiest way to acquire these additional components is by using a second copy of Puerto Rico. Additionally, you need to use 6 large violet buildings instead of the usual 5 large violet buildings. If you have the Puerto Rico expansion then I recommend using the Cloister as the extra large violet building. Puerto Rico comes with one blank large violet building so you have the option to make your own. If you wish to use the Puerto Rico expansion then you will also need two copies of this as well in order to play with 6 players. There are two versions of the 6 player board provided. The first one has the standard 6 roles with 3 prospectors. The second one has the standard 6 roles, 2 prospectors and 1 new role called the politician. You only need to choose one of these to play a game with 6 players depending on whether you wish to play with or without the politician. The rules for the politician are explained below.

Rules for 2 Players

Note: for the official Alea modified 2 player rules view http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/128510/2-player-officialalea-variant. The modified preparation for 2 players is indicated on the 2 player board. The modified rules for 2 players are as follows (these are indicated on the 2 player board for reference): The governor begins and selects a role. Subsequently, the players alternate selecting roles until both players have each selected 3 roles. Place one doubloon on the remaining role card. The governor then changes to the other player and the above sequence is repeated. All other rules are the same as in the multiplayer game.

Rules for 6 Players

Note: for the original 6 player Puerto Rico rules by kenjohns view http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/5099/6-player-puertorico. Aside from the setup (as indicated on the 6 player boards), there is no modification to the rules for 6 players. However, if you are using the politician then you will need to use the following extra rules: A player selecting the politician role has one of two choices. 1. The player takes a doubloon from the supply (this is exactly like choosing the prospector). 2. The player selects a role that has already been used this turn then carries out the role without gaining the privilege provided by that role. All other players, in turn, may then carry out the re-used role if they so choose. E.g., a player wants to select the Settler role, but it has already been used this turn so the player selects the politician role and chooses to re-use the Settler role. All players may then choose a plantation in turn order just as if the Settler had been selected, except that the player selecting the politician does not have the privilege of choosing a Quarry.
