Cinnaminson tops Rancocas Valley, 44-24 Preschool
program
accepting
applications
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
With its first year well under-
way, the integrated preschool pro-
gram for 4-year-olds in the Cin-
naminson Public School District
is now accepting applications to
participate in the upcoming lot-
tery that will determine which
children are admitted to the pro-
grams 2014-2015 school year.
The deadline for lottery appli-
cations is March 6, as the pro-
gram has a limit of up to 10 gener-
al students and five special educa-
tion students.
The lottery will then be held on
March 10 at New Albany Elemen-
tary School, the location of the in-
tegrated preschool program.
To qualify for the program, stu-
dents must be 4 years old by Oct.
1. A birth certificate with a raised
seal and two proofs of residency
are required to apply and partici-
pate in the lottery and must be
presented when the application is
submitted.
When in session, the program
runs Monday to Friday, from 1-
3:30 p.m.

Arlene Goldfarb, supervisor of
special services with the Cin-
naminson Township Public
Schools, said the program was re-
searched and developed to pre-
pare students for the future.
It really is an excellent pro-
gram to expose the kids to all the
preschool skills theyll need for
when they enter kindergarten,
Goldfarb said.
Goldfarb also said the program
was innovative and creative for
incorporating the Handwriting
Without Tears curriculum, which
focuses on instilling fine motor
skills in young children through
the teaching of handwriting.
The program has two teachers
assigned to it, one specializing in
general education and one spe-
cializing in special education.
Goldfarb said the two teachers
have been cooperating and work-
ing seamlessly, and the success of
the program reflects that.
I think its been going great,
Goldfarb said. We took two expe-
rienced teachers running their
own class and put them together.
The sum has been even greater
than the parts.
Goldfarb said parents can set
up appointments to observe the
program in action. She hopes this
year to give parents a better
chance to explore the program,
especially those who might have
overlooked Cinnaminson last
year because the program didnt
start accepting applications as
early as other preschools in the
area.
I think a lot of people arent
aware of it yet, Goldfarb said.
Thats why we moved our lottery
to March 10 to give parents a
chance to give us a look.
However, Goldfarb said
shes proud of what the program
accomplished for students
in its first year, and the experi-
ence gained from running the
program will only make things
better for the upcoming 2014-2015
year.
The second year is always
stronger because weve been
through it before, Goldfarb
said.
The program costs $3,000 a
year, and parents can make one
full payment or pay the tuition as
per a specified fee schedule.
I know for a fact that our pro-
gram is the best in the area, and
at $3,000 a year, its very reason-
able, Goldfarb said.
For additional information
about the program or to set up a
parental observation, contact
Goldfarb at (856) 786-5310 ext 2880
or goldfarba@cinnaminson.com.

According to experts, one in 10
children or 400,000 each year
will experience child sexual
abuse before they turn 18. In an
effort to rid the world of child sex-
ual abuse, the YMCA of Burling-
ton and Camden Counties, with
the New Jersey YMCA State Al-
liance, has joined forces with
Darkness to Light, a nationally
recognized nonprofit organiza-
tion and creators of the award-
winning Stewards of Children
child sexual abuse prevention
curriculum to educate adults in
the community on how to pre-
vent, recognize and react respon-
sibly to child sexual abuse.
Through the initiative, the
YMCA of Burlington and Cam-
den Counties is offering a Stew-
ards of Children child sexual
abuse prevention training, open
to adults in the community on
Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at
the Mt. Laurel YMCA, located at
59 Centerton Road, Mt. Laurel.
The two-hour, evidence-based
program is designed to increase
knowledge, improve attitudes and
change child protective behav-
iors. Darkness to Light training
covers a five-step action plan:
Learn the facts one in 10
children is sexually abused. More
than 90 percent know their abus-
er.
Minimize opportunity elimi-
nate or reduce isolated, one-on-
one situations to decrease risk for
abuse; talk about it and have open
conversations with children
about our bodies, sex and bound-
aries.
Recognize the signs know
the signs of abuse to protect chil-
dren from further harm.
React responsibly under-
stand how to respond to suspi-
cions or reports of sexual abuse.
Cost for participation in Stew-
ards of Children child sexual
abuse prevention training is $10
per person. Continuing education
credits for professionals in vari-
ous fields can be obtained
through this training.
To help the YMCA of Burling-
ton and Camden Counties end
child sexual abuse or for more
about Stewards of Children work-
shops, contact Dana Collins, 234-
6200 ext. 227 or danac@ymca-

Recent graduates of Westfield
Friends School reunited at the
school for the 1st Annual Drum
Circle Challenge on Friday
evening, Jan. 10. The teens,
under the direction of Fay
Griscom, Westfields music
teacher, drummed for several
hours and filled the school audito-
rium and possibly the entire
neighborhood with the sounds
of Caribbean music. Parents, sib-
lings and Westfield Friends
teachers made up the enthusias-
tic audience.
The Westfield Friends alum en-
joyed an evening with their for-
mer classmates and had fun revis-

The seventh-grade students at
Westfield Friends School recently
held a Publishing Party with
their kindergarten buddies to
celebrate the younger students
accomplishments. As part of the
schools literacy and writing pro-
gram, kindergarten students
have been drawing pictures of
various school events, from fire
drills to snowstorms and every-
thing in between. The students
write their own stories to go
along with the artwork and create
their very own original story
books.
Their seventh-grade mentors
gathered together to help them
read the stories aloud to their
classmates. Stage fright was easi-
ly overcome as the younger chil-
dren were encouraged and ap-
plauded by their older friends.
The event ended with some well-
deserved candy.
Westfield Friends School has
several buddy programs in place
that provide a rich interaction be-
tween grade levels for students to
work together and learn from

S
chool budgets are on the horizon
statewide. There once was a
time when residents had a di-
rect way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey
right now? School board member has
to be at or near the top of the list.
Whether you support Gov. Christies
approach to budgeting, school board
members have had a tough time deal-
ing with a reduction in state aid over
the last few years.
The vast majority of board mem-
bers dont want to raise taxes and/or
cut services. But, sometimes, there is
no other option.
Pretty much across the state, school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas
for cutting expenses and raising rev-
enues?
Whatever the budget situation
proves to be this year, what needs to
happen between now and next year to
make things better?
We invite you to write letters to the
editor to share your thoughts with the
rest of the community. If you support
the budget, if you oppose it, if you
have ideas that could bring additional
revenue into your school district or
help to cut costs, now is the time to
share them.
Between now and when the school
budget is passed, be involved as much
as you can. Attend school board meet-
ings and express your thoughts.
Youll be sending a message to your
board of education regarding what
you would like to see take place in fu-
ture years years that promise to be
difficult yet again.

Throughout the school budget season,
please share your thoughts with the
community through a letter to the editor
in our paper.

dents work with their pre-kindergarten
buddies on many projects throughout the
school year. The fifth- and third-grade stu-
dents come together to work as Science
Partners. Once a month during Quaker
Fridays the whole school gathers and is
divided into teams with a representative
from each grade level. Those teams then
enjoy memorable opportunities, such as
pumpkin carving in autumn, decorating
the school with homemade materials at
holiday time and planting flowers in May.

1788) is a coed, Quaker Day School serving
