Espresso is G3 with Power 970 based architecture. It has three cores with an extended firmware interface that seems to be extremely upgradable via software updates.

i dont think you guys quite know how cpus work. there are only a handful of PC games that can utilize the entire 8 cores of a cpu. many games still dont use a full quad core cpu. its like this: you have 8 construction workers doing a slow job on a project vs 4 workers working their butts off. theoretically they may finish at the same time or nearly but very few construction sites are big enough to allow 8 workers to work at the same time. so only 4 of the 8 slow workers can do the job vs 4 workers working their butts off. the fast quad core thus vastly outperforms a slow 8 core on almost all video games. in reality 2-4 of those 8 cores will be for gaming while the others will be used for other calculations running a the same time as the game - voice chat, social media, ect.

that is a good analogy, but you are forgetting all the other factors that play an important part in cpu processing. the size of construction sites can be increase by optimizing (organizing) the workload by optimizing the cpu's cache and the amount of ram and the memory bandwidth. now with amd's apu, single processing and parallel processing can be done simultaneously. so it maybe true that most cpu's in pc don't utilize all the core when gaming. in consoles they're optimize to utilize all the cores as developers try to squeeze everything out of it.

I think this could be a great thing across the board. If the consoles start actually using all of the cores, it should create growth in the whole industry to begin programming for all cores. (Fingers crossed)
edgardo127
By the end of this generation of consoles Naughty Dog, Square-enix, Guerrilla, and various other game companies were able to utilize all the cores on the PS3 to its maximum potential

I feel some of the AAA games coming out on current gen consoles this year are hitting the limits or are very close to hitting the limits of their hardware. The Last of Us looks like it is on PS3. I'm so hyped for that game!

People hugely misunderstand the concept of pushing a console to its limits. They have been pushed from year one, however the developers have discovered how to better optimise the system. For every extra bit of fidelity your getting, something has been sacrificed, be it poly-count, lighting, shader processes, draw distance, size of loaded asse and so on. Essentially they have a better understanding of the limitations. The older games were just as graphically demanding, just more wasted/less balanced use of the GPU.
kkultra1234
But lets face it, Bethesda pushed to far on The elder scrolls 5 skyrim
8bitz0mbie
hahah yes, they totally did. it had a hard time with that game. dark souls also had a hard time keeping the framerate up in some areas

Yeah both consoles have been pushed to their limits for the last couple of years, devs have been really pulling out all the tricks to make the games look even better.
zurran
not actually true, even Halo 4 only used about 65-70% of a 360s technical limits.
Comegetsome117
When a game requires more than one disk, shitt is going on.
MOD
Dual Disc DVDs only stores about 7 GB of data. Big games with just decent graphics need a lot of space.
Comegetsome117

Or what

Right.

yeah, thats more about how large the game is rather than how much resources the console is using

I love Halo, but lets be honest Halo 4 looked slightly better and cleaner than Reach or ODST. It's not like 343 was pushing any new territory in the graphics dept. It looked better, but they are still dealing with a shell of 10 year old tech. It's like someone trying to push a game today with the buzz words..." it has the Unreal 3 Engine."
Comegetsome117
I just hope the leak for Halo 5 is true. Where cloud gaming in Halo lets have 64 on 64 or even 100 on 100 "bots". You can even 1v1 your friends bot while their offline which would be cool if were true.
XxHaloFreak
yeah, or at least a bot system like on cod black ops, i liked that.
ORB1T4L
Yeah bots are awesome when you want to learn how the maps are and where the hot points are.
Comegetsome117
Cloud is easier and much more intelligent. Bots made by developers won't be as smart as the ones created by cloud. I remember Frank O Conner said(during Halo 4's launch) that we are ordering new technology. I thought he only meant a new engine. He could of meant cloud technology. Bots can be good for forge though. Placing them in certain areas. That
be amazing.
8bitz0mbie
i thought halo 4 looked a lot better. i didnt really play ODST that much though so i could be forgetting what it actually looked like
Jeremy Conrad
are you serious the graphics on halo 4 were phenomenal, it wasnt slightly better than reach or odst it was indescribably better.
lol

Then why do we have so many sub-HD games for the console, the console is nearly maxed out and they can't even get the games running in 720P( nearly all games are upscaled from sub-HD resolutions with low resolution textures to boot).
8bitz0mbie
really? i didn't know this. what games? so the games aren't truly 1080p?
RabbidZombie
There are only a few 1080P games for both the PS3 and the 360(you would have to search hard to find the total count but it is less than 10 games if I am correct). Most games are running at less than 720p and then upscaled to the resolution that your console is set at. Even fewer games run at 720p with the same textures. Then you finally get games that run at or slightly lower than 720p with high resolution textures( games that really stand out and look better than nearly every other game, Skyrim is one that fits in this category). Games on both consoles use hardware to upscale the games to 720p or 1080p, also the 360 only upscales to 1080p it can not output 1080p natively like the PS3(which you only see while in the XMB,Blu-ray movies and some apps.
kingredcastle
Jeremy Conrad
make sure your hd settings are set for 1080p because all of my games are 1080p
RabbidZombie
There is a huge difference between upscaled and native 1080p, if you have seen any game that runs in native 1080p on one of the new consoles or a game on the PC you would know what I am talking about.
eAbyss
Actually the 360 can output to 1080p. It was originally limited to 1080i but they were able to bump it up to 1080p later using a simple update.
RabbidZombie
It can output only scaled to 1080p not native 1080p, there is a huge difference. You get a much sharper and clearer image on the XB360 if you leave it set at 720p vs 1080p because the image is scaled at 1080p not displayed native if you have a higher end tv. The GPU only outputs to 720p but the 360 has a scaler chip that takes the image and scales it to 1080p, of course there is a loss of image quality by doing this. There are many older tv's that upscale the image to 1080p but do not do nearly as good of a job, that is why for those who have one of these tv's it is better to let the console do it. The 360 outputing to 1080p was not a simple update(which would infer a software update), MS had to add a HDMI port and a scaler chip to a new motherboard.
8bitz0mbie
yes but there are other things using the rest of the resources. there is the OS, the game chat, etc. the companies want to get everything they can out of the systems to make the game look and run as good as possible.
ORB1T4L
That's why Microsoft will keep the 360 alive for 3 more years, it's a good thing ! :D
lol
chev327fox
You are under the assumption they could have made it look better but chose not too...? If no, then your percentages are just assumptions on how much you think they have not been able to optimize it. SO really they used 100% of what they knew how to.
Anthonydotcom
eAbyss
No multiplayer 360 game utilized over 90% of the CPU due to host overhead, something that won't be a problem on the X1.
Aj-dono
the last of us is one of the best games i've ever played, if not the best. believe the hype and then some. enjoy dude. normal mode is quite easy.
Ares_7-4
Yeah, I've started to realize that too. Ammo is scarcer than I initially thought though. I always have one pistol and one long gun completely empty while my others only have about 3 - 5 rounds each. This game really forces me to be stealthy like no other game has.
ORB1T4L
To fully enjoy a game, always play it in the hardest mode ! It makes the game better and longer. ;)
Willian Bueno
Agreed...
no. you didn't get it. you don't get it. you don't deserve to get it.
