aN OVERVIEW

The biotechnology branch, UIET in association with Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Department, Panjab University organized a 2-day event in September 2012 that had a great impact in the region & received an overwhelming response. The day 1 concluded with a national symposium on the changing trends of biotechnology, where eminent scientists & industrialists addressed the conference & shared their views on biotechnology and its industrial role. The 2nd day of Bio-cAMP 12 was even more scintillating and full of energy as students from various colleges competed in various competitions like Biohunt, Bio-paradigm, Bio-czars and Quiz, that concluded one of the most dedicated efforts made to promote biotechnology in the region.

DAY 1: THE SYMPOSIUM

The first day of Bio-cAMP 12 saw reputed personalities from the biotechnology fraternity of the country share their experiences with the students. While some talked about our countrys history and its assciation with biotechnology, others emphasized on the need to learn the details of the subject and to innovate based on such knowledge. The stage at Bio-cAMP brought together the present and the former Vice-chancellors of Panjab University, who talked about the legacy of the university and its students in the field of biotechnological research and cited the example of Hargobind Khurana. The industrialists focussed on the need to sharpen technical knowledge and the characteristics they look for in potential employees during their recruitment process.

DAY 1: THE SYMPOSIUM

Bio-cAMP 12 saw the following academicians & industrialists grace the stage: Prof. R.K. Saxena Head, Microbiology dept, Delhi University Dr. U. C. Banerjee Professor & Head, Pharmaceutical Technology, NIPER Dr. Parikshit Bansal Asst. Professor, Dept of Pharma, NIPER Prof. Rama SVerma Professor, Dept of Biotechnology, IIT Madras Prof. Sanjay Chhibber Professor, Dept of Microbiology, Panjab University

Dr. S.S. Kanwar Proffessor, Dept of Biotechnology. Himachal Pradesh University Dr. Sudhir Kumar Sharma General Manager & Head of Discovery Biology, Panacea Biotec Ltd

DAY 2: THE EVENTS

BIO-QUIZ
Around 90 students participated in a quiz based on basic sciences with the main focus on biotechnology and the current developments in the various sub-fields of it. There was a preliminary round with a written test. 4 teams out of the initial 45 teams were shortlisted for On-Stage quiz that consisted of 4 rounds. The on-stage quizzing included Rapid fire and Audio/ Visual rounds. Students from NIT Jalandhar, NIT Kurukshetra and Khalsa college, Ludhiana took the laurels here.

BIO-CZaRS
Bio-Czars was a technical event wherein students were tested for their technical and conceptual proficiency, spontaneity and mathematical skills as well. It consisted of two rounds where first round was based on designing a drug for a particular target and then marketing the same drug with markets falling and rising every minute. Second round involved designing the best product from nature (for instance, specific features from any plant, animal, bird etc.).

DAY 2: THE EVENTS

BIO-HUnT
Bio-Hunt was the most successful competition of Bio-cAMP 12 and boasted of the participation of 100+ students. A cAMP was set up where every occupant in a team of 2 was after the hidden treasure. Participants were supposed to crack the puzzles and reach the treasure in time. All the students ran all around the cAMP with a never-ending enthusiasm. Finally, teams from DAV, Chandigarh and UIET got to the hidden treasure first & took home the award.

BIO-WIZ
A poster presentation competition was organized for school students to encourage and promote Biotechnology amongst them. A motivating lecture by our Branch Co-ordinator, Dr. Sanjeev Puri aimed at spreading awareness about the emerging field amongst the school students. Very innovative posters by school students on topics such as bioremediation and pesticide overuse were presented. Students from St.Xaviers school, Chandigarh outshone their counterparts.

DAY 2: THE EVENTS

POSTER PRESEnTaTIOn
The poster presentation competition was held on the day of the symposium and saw a wide range of participants ranging from undergraduate students to PhD scholars as well as experienced teachers. Everyone showcased their ingenuinity through posters based on inventine projects. These were judged by the guest speakers and it was a UIET student who shone and took away the award as the winner of the competition.

BIO-PaRadIGM
The model-making event was a test of a participants technical skills and at the same time tapped their creative potential as well as innovation and imagination. It was a simple design-and-build event that called out to every IMAGINEER. The participants presented models on topics such as Microbial fuel cells. The event turned out to be a resounding success. Teams from UIET & NIT, Jalandhar were declared the winners and the runner-ups respectively.

BIO-CAMP 12

OUTCOMES

Bio-cAMP 2012 started as a student initiative, with a vision to inculcate in students, the scientific temperament and the zeal to learn and keep up with the new and ever changing trends of biotechnology in India. For this purpose a two day event on 27 September and 28 September was conducted, the first day being a Symposium and the second day being one for competitions. The guest lectures by eminent scientists on day-1 and competitions like BioParadigm, Devils advocate and Bio-Hunt were conducted to pave the way for the imagination of the participants to proliferate and come up with something interesting and creative. Bio-Czars covered the interest of those who correlate the biotechnology field and its importance in the industrial products and their value in the market, which is a contributing factor to the economy. Given the rising nature and the need of the field of biotechnology in the country, Bio-cAMP was aimed at reaching for a larger audience, make them realise its importance and also to encourage them to make their thought process work with a properly guided and directed opinion. For the students to come up with an opinion about issues related to biotechnology, not only the field but also making constructive ideas work, the need to conduct an event on

OUTCOMES

such a scale was realised. As described earlier, the Bio-cAMP 12 was a success in many aspects. A lot of students from the region were involved, with participations from NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Jalandhar, Khalsa College, Ludhiana, DAV, CGC and other colleges from Panjab Technical University also showed great enthusiasm towards Bio-cAMP. This year, we aim to come up with something more lucrative and beneficial for the students, beyond the related fields in biotechnology and hold events which involve tasks from the spheres of daily life, and propagate to the students, the wide applications of this field of science. The agenda is to put students on a path where they can sharpen the required skills and ultimately, be ready for a relevant job in life sciences, be it in research or in the industry. For the same, inputs from reputed presonalities in the field will be put forth to the students and we intend to hold a more fruitful discussion on some these issues and try to enlighten the audience reagarding some of the lesser known, but equally important aspects of the attainment of success in the field of biotechnology in our country.
