In BeO (Zinc Blende structure), Mg2 is introduced in available tetrahedral voids. Then ions are removed from a single body diagonal of the unit cell. What will be the molecular formula of the unit cell? In a crystal oxide ions are arranged in fcc and A+2 ions are at 1/8th of the tetrahedral voids, and ions B+3 occupied of the octahedral voids. Calculate the packing fraction of the crystal if O-2 of the removed from alternate corner and A+2 is being place at 2 of the corners. Analysis shows that nickel oxide has the formula Ni0.98O . What fractions of the nickel exist as Ni2 and Ni3 . A compound formed by elements X & Y, Crystallizes in the cubic structure, where X is at the corners of the cube and Y is at the six face centers. What is the formula of the compound? If side length is 5A, estimate the density of the solid assuming atomic weight of X and Y as 60 and 90 respectively. 5.35 g of a salt ACl (of weak base AOH) is dissolved in 250 ml of solution. The pH of the resultant solution was found to be 4.827. Find the ionic radius of A+ and Cl if ACl forms CsCl type crystal having 2.2 g/cm3. Given Kb (AOH) = 1.8 105 this cell unit

An element crystallizes into a structure which may be described by a cubic type of unit cell having one atom in each corner of the cube and two atoms on one of its face diagonals. If the volume of this unit cell is 24 x 10-24cm3 and density of the element is 7.20gm/cm3, calculate no. of atoms present in 200gm of the element. Ice crystallizes in a hexagonal lattice. At the low temperature at which the structure was determined, the lattice constants were a = 4.35 , and b = 7.00 . How many molecules are contained in a unit cell? [density (ice) = 0.92 gm/cm3) Titanium crystallizes in a face centered cubic lattice. It reacts with C or H interstitially, by allowing atoms of these elements to occupy holes in the host lattice. Hydrogen occupies tetrahedral holes, but carbon occupies octahedral holes. a) Predict the formula of titanium hydride and titanium carbide formed by saturating the titanium lattice with either foreign element.

PASSAGE II: Solids may be classified basing on electrical conductivity as conductors, semiconductors and insulators. To improve the conductivity of pure silicon and germanium, they are doped with impurities which results in p-type ad n-type semiconductors.

Based on the response of electron and atomic magnetic dipoles, on application of an external magnetic field, solids are classified into different categories of magnetic materials.

In some crystals, there may be some permanent dipoles. These may align themselves in an ordered manner such that there is a net dipole moment in the crystal. These crystals exhibit piezo electricity. In some crystals, the dipoles are permanently lined up and the direction of polarization can be changed by applying an electric field. These crystals are said to be ferroelectric. The crystal in which there is no net dipole moment is said to be anti ferroelectric.
