DREAM PILLOWS
The European craft of making dream pillows goes back several centuries. Dream pillows recall a time in our history when people assigned magical powers to herbs. Certain herbs under the pillow were believed to protect against evil, foretell the future, or conjure up lovers. Ancient stories tell of herbs that were used to calm bad dreams, bring good dreams, or quiet the restless sleeper. Modern reasoning tells us that herbs can't predict events or ward off evil. However there is much evidence, both historical and modern, that pleasant fragrances from herbs and flowers do have a positive effect on dreaming. Research in the area of Aromatherapy has shown that the fragrances of certain herbs and flowers enable us to relax, and eventually fall asleep and dream. To this end our dream pillows are crafted. All of our dream pillows measure approximately 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" and feature an inner fabric pouch containing two full cups of botanicals (no "fluff" fillers are used.) Although the practice of using essential oils dates back to the Egyptians, the term aromatherapy was coined by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist in 1928. Gattefosse had witnessed the curative properties of essential oils when he used them to treat wounds during World War I. ESSENTIAL OIL USES

If you haven't used Essential Oils before, introducing them into your lifestyle is quite easy and can be both fun as well as therapeutically beneficial. Below are a few ways in which you can get started. These suggestions are provided as guidelines only. It is important to remember that essential oils are flammable. When trying an essential oil for the first time, use a small quantity such as a single drop to ensure that you do not have a sensitivity to the oil. SIMPLE INHALATION - Place 3 -4 drops of essential oil on a tissue. Place the tissue next to your nose and inhale. Try Lavender to help reduce anxiety and improve sleep; Eucalyptus for congestion; or Peppermint when you are feeling fatigued or tired. STEAM INHALATION - Pour 2 cups of boiling water into a bowl. Add 2 -8 drops of essential oil into the water. (Fewer drops are needed when using an oil such as Cinnamon or Eucalyptus, that might cause mucous membrane irritation.) Place your nose about a foot away from the bowl and inhale. Steam inhalation is great for helping with colds and flu. Do not use steam inhalation if you have a heart or respiratory condition. Try Lemon, Orange and other citrus oils for improving mood and increasing mental alertness. ROOM FRESHENING - Pour 2 cups of boiling water into a bowl and add 10 - 12 drops of essential oil into the water. Use fewer drops when using oils such as Cinnamon or Eucalyptus. You alternatively can use an "Aroma Ring" or electric diffuser. GENERAL HOUSEHOLD USE - Add a few drops of oil to your trash can, washing machine, vacuum cleaner (one way to do this is to add a few drops to a tablespoon of baking soda placed in a dish and then to vacuum up the mix), sink drain, on a tissue for placement amongst garments in your dresser. You can also place a few drops of insect repelling essential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place them next to doorways and windows to help repel insects. (Use caution around children and pets and be careful not to apply the essential oil directly onto surfaces that might be stained or damaged by the oil.) IN THE BATH - Add 8 - 15 drops of essential oil to your bath water after the water has finished running. Try Eucalyptus or Ginger for muscle tension; Bergamot or Lavender to help reduce feelings of stress; for something more exotic try Ylang-ylang, Patchouli or Cardamom.
