UK candidates will probably be familiar with the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the national assessment of university research that takes place every few years. We are

seeking candidates whose work would be rated as world-class or internationally excellent in a REF exercise, for which research is defined as a process of investigation leading to new insights, effectively shared, and judged by its significance, originality and rigour. Research-related outputs, for example textbooks, publications aimed at a more general audience, and those not involving original work, are not suitable. We will consider all the research work that you list in your application, but it would be helpful if you would selfselect what you consider to be your four strongest research outputs in the most recent 6 years, up to and including the current calendar year, for any work that is published or otherwise expected to be in the public domain in this period. In your application form please make it clear if any of your previous roles have been fractional, teaching only i.e. didnt include research as part of your role, and whether you have had any periods of approved leave e.g. maternity leave, sickness absence or other leave. We will take this into account in considering your research record, in accordance with the expectations of a REF exercise. Department information The Department of Life Sciences includes staff working in the areas of Anthropology, Biosciences, Health Sciences and Sport Sciences. Since 2005 we have been located in Whitelands College, overlooking Richmond Park. The original Grade I listed building has been extended to include a modern purpose-built new wing housing excellent laboratory facilities. Our laboratories have high quality facilities for clinical chemistry, immunoassay, histochemistry, quantitative microscopy, ecology, hormonal analysis and work with radioactive tracers. We also have modern biomechanics and sport physiology laboratories. In addition, a number of anthropology and biology staff carry out fieldwork at national and international sites. The Department has 38 academic members of staff (approximately 35.5 FTE), as well as Visiting Lecturers, PhD students and Visiting Honorary appointments and a team of 8 highly experienced technical staff (7.2 FTE). In recent years university investment has allowed the department to strengthen its staffing profile with the appointment of number of excellent researchers, both experienced and early career, at the forefront of their fields. The Department has a vibrant research community with staff and research students working together in research centres. In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), a significant amount of our research was rated as internationally excellent, with biological anthropology being the highest rated unit in the UK in its field. We have strong and productive collaborations within and between the research centres, with other departments within the university (e.g. Psychology, Social Sciences) and externally, with academic centres of excellence in the UK and abroad. There are four research centres in the Department: Centre for Research in Ecology (CRE) Centre for Research in Evolutionary & Environmental Anthropology (CREA) Health Sciences Research Centre (HSRC) Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) In recent years the research centres have been successful in attracting external research funding from research councils, charities and industry, (e.g. AHRC, American Physiological Society, British Ecological Society, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Company of Biologists, The Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust, Efamol Ltd, Environment Agency, EPSRC, ESRC, Esmee Fairburn Foundation, European Union (EU), EU CONNECT, Freshwater Biological Association, GE Healthcare, Global Canopy Programme, Kelloggs, Lee Valley Park Authority, Leverhulme Foundation, Leakey Foundation, MRC, NERC, NHS, North of England Zoological Society, Novartis, Nuffield Foundation, PPP Medical Healthcare Trust, Prince's Trust, Royal Society). The Department of Life Sciences is home to several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, covering the areas of biological and health sciences, anthropology, and sport sciences. Recently, we have brought together biological and social anthropologists to further develop our work in this area. The Department is committed to the development of new learning technologies and paradigms to further enhance student experience, and this is supported by external funds such as the Higher Education Academy. We also offer a range of Master level programmes including MSc, MRes, and PhD programmes, with projects supervised by staff with international research profiles.

Role summary Reports to Head of Department Direct responsibility for n/a Applications are invited for a full-time, without-term Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Sport & Exercise Psychology. We are looking for applicants with research and teaching interests complementary to those of staff in the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre, with expertise in sport psychology, exercise psychology, and research methods. Roehampton has a strong and growing reputation for its research in physical activity, exercise and health, musculoskeletal biomechanics, environmental physiology, and sport and exercise psychology. We focus on enabling successful performance and well-being, with an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Our work is supported through high-grade psychology, biomechanics and physiology laboratories. We have suites of masters and undergraduate programmes in Sport Science, including BPS accredited programmes in BSc Sport Psychology, and MSc Psychology of Sport and Exercise. We are seeking applications from highly motivated candidates who have a track record and further potential for high quality research, and who will deliver high quality teaching and student support at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Summary of the terms and conditions of employment for the role Appointment The appointment is offered on a permanent basis and you would be in post by September 2014. You are expected to register on to the Roehampton University Certificate in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education (RU Cert LTHE) and complete the programme during the first year of service at Roehampton University unless you : hold a certificate in learning and teaching in Higher Education from a University; have over 3 years experience of teaching in Higher Education in the UK; are a Fellow of the HE Academy (NB. You must supply proof of your FHEA status i.e. number and date.)

New colleagues with 3 or more years experience of teaching in higher education and/or who hold a certificate in learning and teaching in higher education but do not hold Fellowship of the HEA are expected to apply for a level of fellowship commensurate with their experience within their first year of service at the University of Roehampton. Added to this are the 8 bank/public holidays and a University Christmas closure, of between 3 - 4 days, depending how Christmas falls each year (the University is closed between Christmas and New Year). Hours of work There are no fixed hours of work and you are expected to give a full professional commitment and work for such reasonable hours as are necessary for you to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. You are expected to work flexibly to meet the needs of the University and Department, including evenings and weekends as required, within the context of the maximum working week as defined by the UK Working Time Regulations.
