2. (18 points)
A massless spring with spring constant k is compressed by an amount xo. A block of mass m is placed on the compressed spring and released from rest on a frictionless surface. This block then strikes another block of mass 2m, which is hung on a massless cord of length L as shown in the figure to the right. The masses stick together after the collision and they both swing up to a height h.

Give answers for parts (a-c) in terms of the following quantities: k, xo, m, and g. (NOTE: not all quantities may be needed for each part, just use the ones you need.) a) What is the velocity of the mass m just before the collision with the mass 2m? (4 pts.)

b) What is the velocity of the combined masses (m+2m) just after the collision? (i.e. before they start to swing up on the cord.) (4 pts.)

c) To what height h, do the combined masses swing up on the cord? (5 pts.)

d) Calculate max, the maximum angle from the vertical position that is reached by the masses, if you are given the following values: k = 1500. N/m2, xo = 0.100 m, m = 2.00 kg, L = 1.00 m and g = 9.80 m/s2. Give your answer in degrees. (5 pts.)

3. (15 points)
At the intersection of Taylor and Halsted Streets, a truck going North on Halsted fails to stop at the red light and collides with a car going East on Taylor, see diagram below. The car and truck stick together after the collision and move off at an angle of = 30.o East of North. The car was traveling at speed vc = 15. m/s before the collision. The truck mass is twice that of the car (i.e. mtruck = 2mcar). before y (north) after y (north)

Car vc vt Truck v2 x (east) x (east)

a) Calculate the initial speed of the truck, vt, before the collision and final speed, v2, of the truck and car (that are now stuck together) after the collision. Clearly circle and label each answer. (10 pts.)

b) If the mass of the car mcar = 1000 kg, how much kinetic energy was lost in this collision? (5 pts.)

A uniform density metal plate in the shape of an equilateral triangle with each side of length L = 2.00 m, is pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the plate and located at its center (i.e. its center-of-mass denoted by the dot). Two small rocket engines are attached to the tips of the triangle that act to create two forces on the triangle F1 = 100. N and F2 = 100. N, as shown in the figure to the right.

a) Calculate the torque about the pivot axis from force F1. (3 pts.)

b) Calculate the torque about the pivot axis from force F2. (3 pts.)

c) Calculate the total (or net) torque about the pivot axis. (3 pts.)

d) You now do an experiment and find that, starting from rest, the triangle rotates about its center through one complete revolution in 4.00 seconds. Using this information, calculate the moment of inertia of the triangle about its center. (6 pts.)
