Erika: Really? I think thats a very common fear. What scares you so much about heights? Ella: I guess I feel like I might fall. Sometimes, if Im on a balcony, I imagine it collapsing. I hate being up high because I know if something happens, Ill be history. What phobias do you have?

Erika: Im scared of spiders. I feel nervous even looking at a picture of one. They have those disgusting, long legs. Some of them even have hair. I think Id die if one of them touched me! Ella: Wow! Ive never thought of them like that. Spiders dont scare me at all. I used to want a tarantula for a pet when I was a child.

Erika: How could anyone want to take care of a spider? Thats insane!

I feel like Im going to pass out. May: Jen, people get blood drawn all the time. Youre just going to feel a small pinch. Its not going to kill you. Jen: I just cant stand the thought of something penetrating my skin. Its simply unbearable. Its going to hurt terribly, Im sure of it. May: No, its not going to hurt that bad. The doctor said that this is the only way to run the test. Youve got to suck it up, Jen. This is important. The nurse is motioning for you now. Jen: Alright, Ill go. Ive got to face my fear now. Advanced: Reading Comprehension

By definition, a phobia is an irrational fear of a certain object, situation, person or activity. It is estimated that 18% of the population suffers from some sort of phobia. Some phobias are more common than others. Listed here are some of the most bizarre, yet diagnosable phobias. Arachibutyrophobia is a fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of ones mouth. Although this fear may be worthy of a slot in a Saturday Night Live skit or an episode of The Simpsons, it is indeed a fear that actually exists. Koumpounophobia is a fear of buttons. This phobia usually occurs during ones childhood and may or may not persist into adulthood. Trichophobia is a fear of loose hair. It may sound hard to believe but an eyelash that has fallen onto your cheek is enough to send someone with trichophobia into a panic. Luckily, this phobia is quite rare.
