Aquarium water is nearly always decient in CO2. Natural CO2 has already been removed from the water which ows out of our taps at the waterworks, by means of aeration. The aquatic plants hungrily devour the minimal quantities which exist in the aquarium. The available supply is usually insufcient. As a result, stems and leaves appear weak and pale, with no sign of growing power. The plants resistance is weakened, algae settle on the leaves. In contrast to natural environments, the natural source of supply is lacking in aquaria. But who wants a centimetres-thick layer of sludge consisting of dead leaves, sh excrement and food residues in their aquarium?
Without CO2!
With CO2!
Stunted and crooked growth Sudden plant death Lime deposits on leaves Much too high, unnatural pH values This results in stress for sh and an increased susceptibility to disease Iron and trace element deciency Sudden ammonia poisoning Algae infestations Part of the CO2 which dissolves in water forms carbonic acid. This means that CO2 can be used to lower the pH value (acid content) of the aquarium water slightly, to levels similar to those which prevail in nature. Aquarium sh are particularly fond of slightly acidic water. It has a positive effect on their sensitive skin. Trace elements which are important for plants and sh are taken in more effectively, as they are more readily soluble in the slightly acidic pH range. Unsightly lime deposits are avoided on plant leaves ("biogenic decalcication").
required supply of CO2 depends on the How much CO2 The type of aquarium does my Higher requirement Lower requirement aquarium need? Higher requirement Lower requirement
Large aquarium Open aquarium Large surface area/ volume ratio Plenty of light Many plants Fast-running lter High level of water movement Additional aeration Small aquarium Covered aquarium Small surface area/ volume ratio Minimal light Few plants Slow-running lter Low level of water movement Without aeration
TIP
In aquaria with ourishing aquatic plants, troublesome algae have practically no chance. Nutrients conducive to algae growth, such as phosphates and nitrates, are "absorbed" immediately by the plants. Plant growth starts to ag when CO2 is lacking, however. Surplus nutrients are no longer consumed quickly enough and algae are able to ourish. Thats why a good stock of plants and regular CO2 fertilization are among the most important measures to prevent algae.

Uniform CO2 production with CO2 control gel. A fermentation process with pure sugar normally begins at a very fast pace, only to drop away substantially after just a few days. As a result, the aquarium receives too much CO2 at the beginning, and too little shortly after. In contrast, Dennerle Bio CO2 with CO2 control gel produces a virtually constant level of CO2 continuously for over 30 days, that is, for more than a month! Each CO2 bottle produces well over 300,000 CO2 bubbles. This assures your aquarium of an ideal supply of CO2 every day. Nothing needs to be set or measured. The ultimate in simplicity and convenience.
TIP
The trick with the thermo container Bio CO2 systems produce more CO2, the warmer it is. The thermo container in the Dennerle CO2 Plant Fertilizer Set Bio 120 adapts CO2 production automatically to the aquarium temperature. Aquaria with a higher temperature also have a higher CO2 requirement.

The CO2 cylinder may take the form of a disposable cylinder for nano aquaria a practical and convenient disposable Dennerle CO2 cylinder or the classic rellable, reusable CO2 cylinder.
This is the core element of every CO2 fertilizer system. The pressure reducer determines how simply and accurately the desired amount of CO2 to be supplied - the number of CO2 bubbles - can be set and how consistently and reliably the system will run in the long term.

The special Softex CO2 hose from Dennerle prevents the CO2 losses which are typical of conventional hoses.
The special CO2 check valve provides all connected CO2 devices (e.g. pressure reducer, solenoid valve) with reliable protection from corrosion caused by backowing water. Setting the right amount of CO2 is childs play with the CO2 bubble counter Exact.
6 The diffusor
...ensures that the CO2 is dissolved quickly and effectively in the aquarium. Because plants can only use the CO2 when it is dissolved in the water. The Dennerle Flipper is one of the most effective diffusors, as the CO2 bubbles pass through a multi-stage system here, ensuring that they have plenty of time to dissolve in the water. The Flipper additionally features an integrated bubble-counting function and an automatic waste gas vent.
Info
Waste gas vent Every time a CO2 bubble dissolves in the water, it is penetrated by other gases (e.g. nitrogen) which are naturally present in the aquarium water in dissolved form. Consequently, all Dennerle CO2 diffusors feature a waste gas vent, designed in each case for the system concerned. Here the waste gases are separated from the substantially heavier CO2 and discharged automatically at regular intervals. This effectively prevents the equipment from becoming "choked up" with waste gas. As a result, Dennerle CO2 diffusors operate highly effectively. The best possible use is made of the valuable CO2.
The CO2 long-term test Correct offers the simplest means of CO2 monitoring. A "green" reading indicates that the level of CO2 in the aquarium water is ideal.
For disposable and reusable systems, the Dennerle CO2 solenoid valve provides the option of shutting down the supply of CO2 at night by means of a time switch, as plants do not consume any CO2 at night. This saves valuable CO2.
The Evolution DeLuxe pH controller is available from Dennerle for high-tech aquarium enthusiasts. This controller continuously measures the pH value in the aquarium and controls the necessary supply of CO2 fully automatically. It supplies just enough CO2 to maintain the set level at all times.
Info
The ideal system for every aquarium Dennerle's own research and development department and decades of experience with its own plant nursery provide it with the necessary know-how on all aspects of CO2. This enables Dennerle to offer all the components which are necessary for simple, safe and reliable CO2 fertilization - from the CO2 cylinder to the CO2 diffusor. In particular, DENNERLE offers a broad choice of complete CO2 sets which have been put together in accordance with practical requirements, ranging from sets for aquaria as small as 10 l to large-scale aquaria. Dennerle offers the ideal CO2 system for every aquarium and every budget - from beginners through upgraders and professionals to experts.
Modular design
All Dennerle CO2 fertilizer systems consist of perfectly coordinated components. This ensures simple operation and reliable functioning. Possible faults are prevented automatically. Waste gases, for example, which disturb the mixing of CO2 and water. Although the CO2 diffusor apparently still contains CO2, a deciency occurs. To combat this problem, all Dennerle CO2 diffusors possess an automatic waste gas vent.

The key feature common to all variants is the innovative Dynamic Valve Control (DVC) technology. This carefully coordinated system of pistons, springs, bores, pressure compensation chambers and valves offers two crucial advantages: 1. The pressure reducers can be adjusted with unprecedented ease and precision by means of a single setting knob. 2. Once set, the supplied quantity of CO2 (number of bubbles) remains stable over a long period. Safety aspects have also received full consideration, with all pressure reducers featuring an automatic pressure relief device and a safety vent. Highly effective, compact CO2 diffusors. With CO2 collector and waste gas vent. No motor required. Mode of functioning: The CO2 supplied by the CO2 fertilizer system is released from the opening at the bottom of the Flipper. The CO2 bubbles then rise slowly along the channels in the Flipper. As the bubbles rise, the CO2 dissolves in the aquarium water - the bubbles thus become smaller as they progress towards the surface of the water. Waste gases are separated from any residual CO2 in the collector and discharged automatically.

Even when using CO2 diffusors with an integrated bubble counter, it is nevertheless extremely practical to install an additional bubble counter close to the pressure reducer. This enables the number of bubbles to be set more simply, quickly and exactly. A separate bubble counter is urgently recommended when using CO2 diffusers without a built-in bubble counter and diffusors which are hidden behind plants or rocks in the aquarium.

Rule of thumb for basic setting of the number of bubbles: 10 bubbles per minute per 100 l of aquarium water. Example - 200 l aquarium: 2 x 10 = 20 bubbles per minute. If the Dennerle CO2 long-term test displays "green", the supply of CO2 is exactly right. If not: Increase the number of bubbles in small daily steps until the desired level of CO2 is attained.
TIP
The bubble counter should ideally be installed in the direct vicinity of the pressure reducer. This has the advantage that any changes to the CO2 supply level will become visible on the bubble counter immediately. To this end, the Dennerle CO2 bubble counter Exact is supplied with a strap - for direct attachment to the CO2 cylinder!
TIP
Install the special CO2 check valve as closely as possible to the pressure reducer / the CO2 solenoid valve - ideally at a distance of 5 to 10 cm. It is then easier to set the number of CO2 bubbles, as every adjustment of the supply quantity is immediately recognisable on the bubble counter. Closure of the CO2 solenoid valve is also immediately evident.
17
Info
Figuratively speaking, CO2 is instinctively "driven" to dissolve in water whenever the opportunity arises. In the event of an interruption in the supply of CO2 to the aquarium (CO2 cylinder empty, cylinder valve closed, CO2 solenoid valve active, etc.), the CO2 which is presently still in the hose will also dissolve in the aquarium water. This causes a vacuum in the CO2 hose, drawing aquarium water into the hose. The special CO2 check valve from Dennerle reliably protects your valuable items of CO2 equipment such as the pressure reducer, CO2 cylinder and CO2 solenoid valve, etc. from backowing water.

How CO2, carbonate hardness and pH value are related Adding CO2 acidies the aquarium water slightly, lowering the pH value. This means that the pH value needs to be watched, to ensure that it does not drop too low. A three-way interrelationship exists between CO2 content, carbonate hardness and pH value. This enables the CO2 content in the water to be calculated on the basis of the measured carbonate hardness and the measured pH value. These measurements, in particular the measured pH value, must be very accurate, however, as the results will otherwise be unusable. Special CO2 indicator for particularly simple and accurate CO2 control Conventional long-term CO2 tests are lled with a mixture of aquarium water and indicator. This involves various disadvantages, one being that the acids which are present in all aquarium waters (e.g. humic acids, nitrate) can distort test results substantially. The Dennerle CO2 long-term test Correct employs a ready-to-use special CO2 indicator which is used on its own, rather than in a mixture with aquarium water. This offers the following key advantages: The CO2 long-term test Correct measures the CO2 content and indicates the actual CO2 content correctly at all times - irrespective of any other acids in the aquarium water. Simplicity: No additional measurement of carbonate hardness is necessary. Only a single colour-matching scale is required. Accuracy: The CO2 long-term test Correct allows direct determination of the CO2 content in milligrams per litre. The test is equally efcient at low carbonate hardness levels. Safety:
19
TIP
For magnicent plant growth, Dennerle recommends a CO2 content in the aquarium of approx. 20 mg/l. The correlation between CO2 content, carbonate hardness (CH) and pH value enables the CO2 content in the water to be calculated according to a simple procedure: Measure the carbonate hardness of your aquarium water. Read the pH value which corresponds to the desired CO2 content from the table. You should set this pH value +/- 0.1 by adjusting the number of bubbles accordingly. Example: Carbonate hardness 4 d, recommended pH 6.8. The procedure is even simpler with the Dennerle CO2 long-term test Correct + pH.

TIP
Simply connect the CO2 night cut-off valve to the time switch which controls your aquarium lighting, as the plants only need CO2 when "the sun is shining" in the aquarium.
