Education Outside the Classroom

Travel should be an education in itself, what we learn from our experiences will help influence and mould our lives. Our mission is that every child comes away from a trip having learnt something that will influence them educationally, socially or both, to encourage them and give them a thirst for learning. The English and Humanities department proposes to offer the following trips over the next two years in order to provide our students with the opportunity to experience as diverse and all-encompassing an education in these subjects as is possible. To facilitate the exploration of English, Literature, History and Geography in the real world and show how these subjects are essential and relevant in todays society and how they link into other areas of the curriculum. To expand young minds in only the way such experiences can. The priority is to offer as many opportunities for all students to engage in trips that that are interesting and appropriate for them. Therefore a range of destinations and experience will be offered at a range of price options so that every student should have the ability to attend a trip of their choice. The numbers for each trip will be limited so that all students attending get the maximum benefit from the experience. Day trips and residential opportunities will be offered to accommodate different student needs. These trips are primarily aimed at year 10 and 11 students taking English Language and Literature GCSE, Geography GCSE and History GCSE however there may be places available for interested year 12 and 13 students, especially theatre trips for those re-sitting English GCSE, but also any other Year 12 or 13 Student who has an interest in a particular trip. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis. All these trips are optional and any student not wishing to attend will not be at any disadvantage in terms of opportunities to complete coursework or exam preparation. However such trips do offer opportunities for students to expand and apply classroom based knowledge and for more exiting coursework options. A timetable for proposed trips is overleaf, though this is offered only as a guide and is open to change due to availability and interest. A final timetable will be drawn up once student interest, trip and staff availability and affordability have been determined. Prices have been estimated and where not included in a package price transports costs should be taken to be 10 per student as an estimate.

39 Steps day trip London theatre trip Wednesday matinee A Daring Leap Workshop A Daring Leap is the education programme offered by The Criterion Theatre Trust to accompany the current resident production by Fiery Angel of The 39 Steps. The programme consists of subsidised tickets for the performance, a free two hour pre-show workshop and online resources with extensive lesson plans. The workshop and resources are aimed at Year 10 and 11 students. Originally a tribal centre of the Iron Age Atrebates, Silchester became the large and important Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum. Unlike most Roman towns, it was never re-occupied or built over after its abandonment in the 5th century, so archaeological investigations give an unusually complete picture of its development (Picture the forum as it might have appeared in the fourth century AD. River studies

The students are split into groups of 15 led by a Rushall Farm guide and then taken to the River Pang on a tractor & trailer. The Pang is a tributary of the Thames and a typical lowland chalk stream. The farm guides demonstrate both river dipping using kick nets and also measuring techniques. The students then get into waders and carry out their own study. The main measurements are the width of the river, a depth profile & measuring flow rate by floating an orange over a set distance. Other measurements that can be taken include the wetted perimeter, the gradient and bedload. All equipment such as ranging poles, tape measures, meter rules etc. is provided. For measuring & dipping a site on the Lower Pang at Bradfield College or Upper Pang at Pangfield is used. If a meander study is also required the students are taken to a meander on a different part of the Upper Pang. In recent years any use of the Upper Pang has very much depended on river levels at any particular time. There is also access to a number of sites from Yattendon to Englefield so comparative studies over the length of the river are also possible.

Blue Lagoon

This itinerary takes in all the main geographical sights of Iceland including the Blue Lagoon, a tour of the south coast and a glacier trek. Accompanied by an Icelandic geography guide pupils will learn about the geothermal and volcanic phenomena of the island. Day 1. UK to Hella. Visit to the spectacular Blue Lagoon, where you will be able to spend the afternoon relaxing in this Geothermal Spa. On to first night's accommodation in Hella. Day 2. From Hella travel along the south coast towards Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a 60m drop over the cliffs of the former coastline, were it is possible to walk behind the waterfall. Continue onwards to Skogafoss, another very spectacular 60m high waterfall, then onwards along the coast to Reynishverfi and the stacks and archways of Dyrholaey, formed by coastal erosion. A short hike to Hjorleifshofdi a freestanding, 221m high tuff headland. Lastly you will visit Solheimajojull glacier, where you will do an ice-hike complete with crampons and ice axes, into the heart of the glacier. Solheimajokul is about 8km long and 1-2 km wide and is discharged by the river Jokulsa and is sometimes called 'The Stinking River' because of the sulphuric acid it contains from sub-glacial high temperature areas. This evening you will return to your huts in Hella. Day 3. Leaving Hella, you will first visit Gullfoss (the Golden waterfall). Next, you will travel onto Geysir to view The Great Geyser after which the geological phenomenon is named. On to Thingvellir National Park, driving over Gjabakka road. Thingvellir National park a site of historical as well as geological importance to Iceland and is the site of a rift valley where you can witness plate tectonics in action. Then to Nesjavellir Power Plant which generates electricity and heat by utilizing hot water and steam from beneath the Earth's crust. Day 4. Drive back towards Reykjavik along the south coast past Hveragerdi, famous for its greenhouses and horticulture. Heat from natural thermal areas in the centre of the town is harnessed to maintain the temperature of the greenhouses. Just above Hveragerdi is the Mt. Hengill volcano and you will spend the afternoon hiking in this hyaloclastite and diorite landscape, exploring the large natural steam vents, bubbling mudpools and hot mineral springs to be found in the area.. In the late afternoon you will head back into Reykjavik for your final night in Iceland. Tonight if you wish, you can go for a swim in the geothermal Reykjavik City Pool. Day 5. Depending on your flight time, you may have the chance for some souvenir shopping in Reykjavik this morning, before being transferred back to the airport to catch your return flight to the UK.

However as I am Yorkshire born and bred and this city is one of my favorite places to be, I know it very well. I may use the company for travel and accommodation and alter the itinerary to suit the students who wish to go. There is so much more to see and do if you know a place well and go a little more off the beaten track. The house where Gut Fawkes was born, just around the corner from York Minster. The Angel playing bagpipes hidden in the Minster, but why? The best coffee shop for cakes in the world. The ghost walk, the city walls, the place of execution of Robert Aske; hung for the crows to eat and St Marys Gardens. The shortest street with the longest name, the Shambles (street of butchers), the shrine of Margaret Clitheroe and the most haunted place in York, to name but a few.

Adventurous Activities:

The centre is AALA licensed and runs activities to develop team building and personal skills as well as give students a different view of Snowdonia and its unique environments.

Climbing & Abseiling sessions at the local crag above the centre (half day challenge) Gorge Scrambling where students experience the power of water by journeying up a series of rapids and waterfalls on a local mountain stream (half day challenge) Orienteering in the centre grounds (evening challenge) or in the local forest (half day challenge) will help students develop their map and interpersonal skills Low Ropes Course adjacent to the centre, a range of challenging obstacles are designed to develop communication and teamwork skills.

Our Tutors All staff complete a rigorous training process; including first aid, health and safety
sessions, group management in the outdoor classroom, site specific training relating subject knowledge to our outdoor environments and curriculum content.

About Silchester
The parish of Silchester in Hampshire, UK, is the location of a large Roman town - Calleva Atrebatum. The Roman town, which was founded in the first century AD (nearly 2000 years ago), was built on the site of an Iron Age town, Calleva. The Roman amphitheatre and town walls are some of the best preserved in Britain, and are open to the public. The town was abandoned sometime after 400AD for reasons that are not fully understood. This makes it one of only six Roman towns in Britain that are not still populated. Archaeology at Silchester

Since 1997, the University of Reading's Department of Archaeology, led by Professor Michael Fulford and Amanda Clarke, have been investigating one block or 'insula' of the Roman town. The aim is to provide details of town life from its origins in the late Iron Age to the time it was abandoned. Excavations take place every July and August and members of the public are welcome visit the site and take part in other on site activities. There is a field school programme, though you have to be over 16 unfortunately. Silchester field school I would be happy to coordinate a visit over the summer with a small group who may wish to go. However this would be on the understanding from the site that they would be responsible for their own transport to and
