Genealogy of the Important Personages of Middle Earth

Valian Age : ~43,600 Years

The Valar work in the deeps of time to create Middle-Earth and war with Melkor. Approximately 18,200 years pass before the Two Lamps are created. The Years of the Lamps lasts approximately 15,300 years before Melkor destroys them and the Valar retreat to Aman. Yavanna creates the two trees, ushering in the last great count of 14,400 years. The Dwarves are created during this age, but put to sleep till after the Elves awaken. Until the rising of the first sun, Valian years were used to count the ages. 1 Valian year is approximately 9.582 solar years. All years in this chart are Solar. The First Age officially begins with the Awakening of the Elves. Orom found the elves on the shores of Cuivinen and reported this to Manw. The Valar then went to war upon Melkor in Utumno and Angband to protect the Elves. Afterwards, the Valar invited the Elves to come to Aman. Ingw, Finw, and Elw were chosen as Lords of each House of Elves to go to Aman that they might report back to their brethren. All of Ingws Vanyar, and the majority of Finws Noldor and Elws Teleri agreed to come. Those who refused the Journey became the Silvan Elves. Ingw, Finw, and Elw then led their people on the long trek across Middle-Earth. The Vanyar were the smallest group and all came to Valinor. The Nolder were a larger group, and they built for themselves Tirion upon Tuna in Aman. The Teleri was the largest host, and many lagged behind and were left in Rhovanion, Eriador, and Beleriand. These became the Sindarin Elves. The rest of the Teleri waited and searched in Beleriand for Elw, who was lost to them for many years. They eventually left Middle-Earth an a second voyage on the isle of Tol Eressa, and built Aqualond on the shores of Valinor. Approximately 4,300 years pass from the Awakening of the Elves till the rising of the first Sun, which happened in the year the Noldor arrived in Beleriand after their journey from Aman. This is when the Solar year begins to be used. An additional 590 years passes after the first sun rise before the destruction of Thangorodrim and the ending of the First Age. This is the age of the Wars of Beleriand, and the great events in the Quenta Silmarillion.

Men awoke in the year of the first sunrise. They first arrived in Beleriand over the Ered Luin, in flight from the perils of eastern Middle-Earth, a few hundred years after the arrival of the Noldor from Aman. They arrived in clans and settled in vacant places throughout Beleriand at the leave of the Elves. The three main Houses of these men were called the Edain. Many served the Kings of the various Elvish Kingdoms and grew in knowledge. They also performed many heroic deeds and greatly assisted the Elves in their Wars against Morgoth. All the Houses were displaced and decimated by the end of the First age.

The First Age ends with the Assault of the Valar upon Morgoth and his fortress Thangorodrim after arendil pleads with the Valar on behalf of the Two Kindreds. After the victory, many elves go into the west, and the faithful men of the Edain are rewarded with a new land, Nmenor. The sons of arendil are given the choice to be counted Elves or Men. Elrond chooses to be an immortal Elf, while Elros chooses to be counted a man, and becomes the First King of Nmenor. Much of Beleriand is sunk, and the elves move to Lindon.
