A detailed lesson plan in PHYSICS 4

I. Objectives: At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to: a. explain apparent depth; b. state the refractive index, n as n = h/h; and c. solve problems involving apparent depth.

II. Subject Matter: A. Topic: Real Depth and Apparent Depth B. Materials: LCD projector laptop power point presentation pictures

D. Methods: Constructivism thinking skill

E. Scientific Ideas:

The depth at which the object appears to be below the surface is called the apparent depth. The depth at which it actually is, is termed the real depth.

The refractive index, n state as n = H/h Where: H= Real Depth h= Apparent Depth n= Refractive Index

III. LEARNING PROCESS: TEACHERS ACTIVITY Good Morning Class! A. Motivation/ Review: Last few days or should I say during the holidays, I know all of you or some of you had some vacation in a resort and in a resort of course there is a swimming pool. So in a swimming pool, do you observe something on it? Okay, lets have a picture of a swimming pool (teacher projected a swimming pool). So what can you observe or what can u notice on the swimming pool? Very Good! Youre correct but why do it appears shallow? Lets have another example? So I have here another picture, a water-filled glass with coin inside. What can you observe? The coin appears closer to the surface of water, Maam. So why do think that the swimming pool looks shallow and the coin appears closer? What do you think is the reason behind? STUDENTS ACTIVITY Good Morning Maam

Maam the swimming pool looks shallow.

B. Lesson Proper:

Maam because of the refraction of light at the surface of water which makes swimming pools appears shallower than they really are. Another Maam is that when light emerges from water into air it speeds up again. If it

Yes correct very good! What else? Can you give another reason why?

Correct, very good! So due to refraction of light thats why the coin appears closer and the swimming pool seems to have a shallow depth and that shallow depth is name or called as the Apparent Depth. So base on the examples given earlier, what is an Apparent Depth? Correct so there is a connection between the real and apparent depths of the water. It can be proved that Refractive index is the ratio of real depth and apparent depth. So if we write it in mathematical express we have the equation : n = H/h Where in : H= Real Depth h= Apparent Depth n= Refractive Index So lets have an example using the formula: A brick at the bottom of pool appear to be 1.2 m from the surface. What is the real depth of the pool? Given that the refractive index of water = 1.33

meets the water-air boundary at any angle other than 0o it will refract away from the normal.

Maam it is the depth at which the object appears to be below closer to the surface rather than the real or actual depth.

N = H/h 1.33=H/1.2 m H=1.33(1.2m) H=1.6 m

A glass block 3.0 cm thick is placed over a stamp .Calculate the height through which the image of the stamp is raised. Refractive index of glass is 1.54.

N = H/h 1.54 = h= 1.94 cm *Height through which image is raised = 3 1.94 = 1.06 cm

C. Summary: So class im going to write here the word Apparent Depth, we are going to have what we call Silent Protocol. In here Im going to give you two minutes to write on the board all the ideas that you have learn today. You dont need to raise your hand in order to go and write your ideas just go in front silently and write the things you know. Be sure that ideas must only write only once, if someone wrote that already in the board think of another idea that you can write. So class your two minutes starts now! Are all your ideas here now? So lets try to sum up all the ideas that are present on the board who wants to the summing up of ideas!

(One by one the students put their ideas about the topic silently on the board.)

(Some students will volunteer in summing up the lesson)

IV. EVALUATION: Solve the following problems. Show your complete solution. 1. A coin is placed at a depth of 15 cm in a beaker containing water. The refractive index of water is 4/3. Calculate height through which the image of the coin is raised. [ 3.75] 2. The floor of a water tank appears at a depth of 2.5 m. If the refractive index of water is 1.33, find the actual depth of water. [3.325] 3. The depth of water in a bucket is 40 cm but its bottom appears to be raised by 10 cm. What is the refractive index of water? [1.33] 4. A glass ( g= 1.5 ) block of thickness 2.7 cm is placed on a postage stamp. What would be the apparent depth of the stamp if it is viewed (i) normally and (ii) obliquely above the glass slab?(ii)[1.8cm] 5. A small air bubble in a glass slab appears to be 2.4 cm from the surface. Calculate the real depth of the bubble if the RI of glass = 1.5 [3.60 cm]
