PREFACE
We believe in the importance of 'Logic' as the basis for acquiring knowledge. It is a universal means for learning, based on questioning, deriving conclusions, reasoning, and decision-making. This is the reason why its importance goes beyond the realm of academics alone. For all of us, and especially for less privileged youth, it is easy to be led astray and make wrong life decisions. Our 'teaching with logic' concept helps create a value system that adds to an individual's moral side as well, helping one become a better human being. Although initially our main activity centered around education and research, in publishing books and research papers on mathematical logic and its application in various allied disciplines, such as computer science, mathematics, philosophy etc. as well as organizing conferences, seminars and talks by eminent experts in the field, our efforts eventually began to expand in an attempt to fostering interest in logic among school students, especially providing support to underprivileged children who are willing to learn, but are victims of an inadequate education system. We consider this as part of our initiative in welfare activities, undertaking specialized remedial teaching programmes for the underprivileged children in local slum areas, studying in the municipal schools. It is directed to reducing their drop-out rates from schools by supporting and encouraging them by giving them personalized attention in their studies and facilitating access to learning via digital technology. At the same time we provide for their well-being and general development, by organizing health, counseling and nutrition programmes. LCCWA Mumbai is striving to provide underprivileged children with a stimulating learning environment where every student can entertain high aspirations and fulfill their potentials. LCCWA endeavors to engage such students by enabling them to access a range of knowledge and skills in a broad range of subjects across a wide ability range. But as we all know, this is easier said than done. The Annual Status of Education Report 2013 on School Education submitted by PRATHAM documents the enormity of the task. It states that the ability for basic reading and arithmetic in Government Schools has declined and is a cause of very serious concern.

Although 2012 was designated as the year of mathematics in India. But it has been a bad year for basic arithmetic for Indian children. The survey conducted by PRATHAM reveals that in 2011 only 6 out of 10 and in 2012 merely 5 out of 10 children are able to solve simple two-digit subtraction problems with borrowing. In 2010 nationally, more than half (53.7%) of all children in Std. V were able to read a Std. II level text. This proportion fell to 48.2% in 2011 and further to 46.8% in 2012. It is obvious that merely passing Laws on Right to Education, guarantying education for all children, is meaningless without sincere effort to impart satisfactory learning Many among this group of children would otherwise be doing mere household work or be engaged in child labor. We badly need concrete and implementable goals and plans for addressing the learning issues to improve upon the basic learning outcomes of this group of children and to help bridge their learning gap. If we fail to do so it would have serious implications for Indias equity and growth jeopardizing social peace and harmony. .

This scenario has led several concerned educationists in our community, including some senior faculty members and students of IIT Bombay, to initiate the present programme of social welfare which not only aims at providing a well designed education for children with a view to helping them make up their deficiencies and backlogs.

LCCWA has initiated innovative teaching methods and offers quality teaching for local slum children virtually at their doorstep, .redefining what is possible for them coming as they do from socio-economically disadvantaged sections of our society. What started with 12 children has grown now to 60 impacting both their learning and performance outcomes in the schools. The number of children has been deliberately kept low so that more individual attention can be given. Thus, LCCWA strives not only to meet individual interests, aptitudes and needs of the students, but makes them realize that what hinders their ability for achievement is the opportunity to develop their skills and character traits necessary for their success.

We are indeed very fortunate in having the support of very experienced, enthusiastic, innovative, dedicated, energetic and highlyskilled academicians with high level of selfmotivation, passion for teaching along with the ability to work as part of a team to join as teachers at LCCWA. They take no remuneration or get monetary rewards in the form of any competitive salary. Their only commitment is to raise the academic attainment of the children and helping young children to achieve. Many among them are former Professors and current students of IIT Bombay and some have prior experience of teaching in some of the well known schools in Powai.

With the help of this committed group of teachers it has been possible to develop progressive pedagogy going beyond vastly improved rigorous classroom instruction into an integrated approach to learning. This incorporates better grasping of concepts as well as project-based approach. Our teachers believe in an integrated approach in pedagogy and outcome-focused accountability and have been keen on impacting students learning, performance and achievements. We assume that the learning contents of a certain area are interdependent, and that the order in which they are presented is relevant to learning. While organizing the curriculum and sequencing learning contents, our teachers make sure that all children acquire the basic contents. This assumption implies an adequate distinction between what is basic and indispensable in learning and what is the result of enlarging or deepening a subject. In comparison with regular municipal schools, the time devoted to teaching at LCCWA is more compacted and efficient to bridge the learning gaps in order to put our children on par with their peers and counterparts in the regular schools. For this, audio-visual presentations on many topics in tandem with regular teaching are also resorted to with the help of lcd projector, accessing open source materials, .ppt and videos by screening them to large batches of students.

Apart from this there are a few other aspects of education that is emphasized at LCCWA Mumbai: promotion of value education and moral based education for character building and spiritual uplift of the children. LCCWA tries to create a system and culture of education in which such self-discovery does not just happen serendipitously but rather is a core focus of education. This can only come from an early exposure to a rich and diverse set of study, including art and music, design, writing and more, some form of vocational training, which would help develop abilities, skills and interests that make them better suited for some jobs over others in future. This is the main emphasis in computer literacy programme for which LCCWA gives a certificate at the end of the completion of the programme. involving parents as partners and stake holders by taking them into confidence not only in terms of academic performance of their ward but also sharing with them the problems relating to health and wellbeing often resulting into parent literacy classes.

Looking at the dismal condition of school education, we feel happy that we are doing our bit, although it might be a drop in the ocean as the problem of bridging the learning gap for this section of children in our society is colossal. Nevertheless, we would like you to join your helping hands in this effort.

To facilitate education and research in Logic to achieve the breadth and depth it should have comparable to the vigor and intensity with which Logic and its relationship with and application in other disciplines is perused in some of the countries where modern Logic has flourished. To nurture the scholarship in Indian Logic as practiced in contemporary times while taking into account the manner in which contemporary logic is being brought to bear on the new ways of interpreting classical texts in Indian Logic resulting in paradigm shifts and emerging distinctive trends / themes. Proliferating (particularly in the local slum areas and the schools located in these areas) computer literacy, proficiency in English language and other related educational teaching programmes, such as teaching of mathematics, Promoting critical thinking wider and deeper into the community, especially among children and among laymen, by customizing some aspects of logic and its applications

Unleashing local energies giving rise to contemporary schools of Logic in India and training brilliant Indian minds with a view to taking a rightful place in the rich intellectual community in the world. While trying to fulfill its social obligations the Centre will carry out programmes meant for the members of the community.

INTRODUCTION

The vision of the Logic Centre and Community Welfare Association Mumbai (LCCWA Mumbai) is to facilitate education and research in Logic and its relationship with and application in other disciplines and training brilliant Indian minds with a view to unleashing local energies in the field. Apart from achieving this academic objective, LCCWA Mumbai is also committed to fulfilling its social obligations.

Distressed by the lack of quality education in the schools, prevalence of rote learning rather than rigorous learning of facts from which children may extrapolate and produce ideas and thoughts, mere cramming of facts without developing an ability to think critically, having no room for the infusion of rational temper, several concerned members of LCCWA Mumbai, including some senior faculty members and students of IIT Bombay together with highly experienced retired teachers of schools and dedicated ladies and volunteers, were led to initiate a well designed programme of remedial learning for the underprivileged children, who are keen on making up their deficiencies and backlogs but are victims of inferior systems of education.

Those involved with school education in the Centre are of the opinion that for cognitive development critical understanding and acquiring skills for problem solving rather than rote learning is important. This, in fact, is the link between research activities of the Centre and its concern for school education / welfare activities. Unlike regular tuition classes and N.G.Os the programme of LCCWA Mumbai, through its various activities, aims at providing personalized attention to the children, their overall development and takes care of their health, counseling and well-being issues.

There are several intellectual domains where arguments and inferences play an essential and defining role: - Mathematics: in constructing proofs and deducing theorems from axioms, - Experimental Science: involves the process of testing hypotheses, - Computer Science: representing knowledge, solving problems, formulating algorithms, writing and verifying programs - The study of Logic in philosophy: where formulation of various types of reasoning procedures constitutes an important methodology. The types of reasoning that can be found are: reductio ad absurdum or infinite regress, which are instrumental in resolving intriguing puzzles, riddles and paradoxes or criticizing or defending various (philosophical) positions.

On what is Logic
The history of logic shows that it is the study of what follows from what, an inquiry into the nature of valid inference or arguments. While it is evident that many cultures have employed intricate systems of reasoning and logical methods in all aspects of human thought, an explicit analysis of the principles of reasoning was developed only in few traditions.

2. Publication and research work in progress: - A new approach to School Education and Integrating Logic with School Curriculum at VI to IX Standards 3. Arranging talks by eminent experts in the area on a regular basis: Four lectures were organized to commemorate the birth centenary of Alan Turing, who contributed in the interface areas of Logic and Computer Science. 4 4. A website was launched on March 16, 2011 and a discussion group has been formed to help anyone interested in learning logic by using digital technology. Fostering interest in logic among Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, especially in IIT Bombay, by inviting them to write articles (surveys, expository, research papers), organizing to get the articles reviewed by world renowned experts in the field and then recommending for the publication of the articles online. Nurturing the scholarship in Indian Logic as practiced in contemporary times while taking into account the manner in which contemporary logic is being brought to bear on the new ways of interpreting classical texts in Indian Logic resulting in paradigm shifts and emerging distinctive trends / themes. In order to facilitate the promotion of both theoretical and empirical study of Mathematical Logic and its applications in the allied disciplines an Association has been formed, called the Logic Centre and Community Welfare Association Mumbai. The Centre is registered with the Charity Commissioners Office, Mumbai, under "Societies Registration Act 1860 with the Registration No.: Maharashtra State, Mumbai 2652 / 2012 G.B.B.S.D dated Dec 10, 2012. The PAN of the Association is: AACCL4262A. 8. In view of the fact that several members of the Association are deeply concerned about the quality and the appalling state of education imparted presently to the underprivileged children, attending particularly to Municipal and Government schools, LCCWA Mumbai decided to undertake also certain activities in the local slum areas, specifically meant for school going children and women, in order to fulfill its social obligations.

A summer camp was held from April 10 14, 2013 The Summer Camp of 2013 and the annex of LCCWA, Mumbai were inaugurated by Ms. Shilpa Singh (Miss India 2012)

A lecture/demonstration programme on Andha Shraddha was organized by Chandrakant Sarvgod to discourage the habit of blind acceptance of any faith, and to instill the habit of questioning and looking for the explanation behind so called miracles in terms of some chemical reactions and sleight of hand.

A novel method of learning music was demonstrated and taught by Mr. Narayan Parasuram, a Professor of IITB who is also associated with Karadi Tales. He also taught the children a song written by the well known lyricist Gulzar which Gulzar had dedicated to the former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

A lecture/demonstration session was conducted by Mr. Sundaram of the Hari Music Foundation. He explained the different musical notes to the children and showed them how to sing. He also talked about how different ragas can be formed.

A fascinating Painting class was organized by Ms. Shailaja.

The other important event was the Book Fair held in the playground of the New Hiranandani School (from April 13 21) and the stall which was allotted to the Centre by the organizers. Tagvinnatti, a well known advertisement firm (http://www.tagvinnatti.com/) prepared 3 huge panels and composed its contents stating our vision and describing our activities. The response of the visitors in terms of both numbers as well as support for our cause was overwhelming.
