SAQ 1 Philosophy of Education To which philosophy of education do you adhere?

Which of these philosophies do you believe is prevailing in our present educational system in the different school levels in terms of beliefs about the learners, curriculum and methodologies? Explain your answers. The philosophy of education that I adhere is Progressivism and I believe that this philosophy is prevailing in our present educational system in the different school levels. Yes! I am a progressivist and as a future teacher, students/pupils should be taken good care at school or even at home and feed them with knowledge appropriately intended for them in becoming enlightened and intelligent citizens in a democratic society. A teacher should sustain the relevance of the academic needs of a child to prepare them not for the adult life but how to deal life for today. In one way to another, they will be able to know and adapt any circumstances they will be encountering as they continue their endeavor in this world. In this aspect, change has a big impact. Teaching them to become literate in facing the changes in the coming generations as per famous lines says: The illiterate of today are not those who can't read and write. Rather, are those who can't learn, unlearn and relearn". In preparing them for these possibilities, one should be equipped of what they can learn today and be able to adjust whatever life may lead them and deal life in the long run. The above mentioned lines may not specifically reiterating the methodological view of progressivism but these beliefs belong to the philosophical insights of the said philosophy.

ASAQ 1 We have a very rich philosophical heritage. From it, you pattern your own personal philosophy of education. You may have chosen to follow the footstep of the essentialist or appreciate much the contemporary ideals of the progressivist. Or, since you agree that individuals have differences in abilities that should be harnessed you consider becoming an existentialist. What you believe about why you teach, what to teach and how to teach your students are influenced by your personal philosophy. As you begin teaching and then grow old in the profession you will find that you will be modifying or even be changing your present philosophy of education. What matters at this point in time is your understanding that your

choice of methods and strategies and even your techniques in handling your students are influenced by this philosophy.

SAQ 2 Society and You The research conducted by Navarro, et. al. presents the perceptions about teachers and teaching. The respondents of the study cut across various institutions and society the home, represented by the parent respondents, the schools represented by the principals, assistant principals and superintendents and the rest of the society represented b the respondents from NGOs, business and industry sectors. By their response the respondents gave you an idea on how social institutions regard the teacher. Now, answer the following questions related to the research. 1. Which research finding is most interesting to you? Why? 2. Based on the research findings given what roles are expected of you, the teacher in society? 3. The findings reveal that teachers are perceived to be respected in the community. Is this respect demanded of other or something earned by you? Explain your answer. 4. The research was conducted in 1994. Has the picture change after 14 years? Why do you say so? What observations is your hypothesis based?

ASAQ 2 Teaching is regarded as the noblest profession. The adage Be proud. You are a teacher. The future depends on you. points to the fact that teachers are still put in the pedestal of respect and honors. Despite of the meager salary received by the teachers as compensation to their

tool, other professionals attribute their success to the timeless contributions of their teachers. In fact, our society recognizes this; hence, give them dues honor and respect buy the awards bestowed upon model teachers. The Metro Bank Foundation, for example, awards annually outstanding teachers who showed exemplary performance and contribution in improving the lives of people in the community.

SAQ 3 Foundational Principles of Morality A principle is that on which something is based, founded, originated, and initiated. It is likened to the foundation of a building upon which all other parts stand. 1. What is a foundational moral principle? Foundational moral principle is the universal norm upon which all other principles on the rightness or wrongness of an action are based. It is the source of morality. 2. Where is the foundational moral principle contained? The foundational moral principle is contained in the natural law. Many moralist, authors and philosophers may have referred to this foundational moral principle in different terms. But it may be acceptable to all believers and non-believers alike to refer it as natural law. 3. State the different versions of the natural law. The different versions of the natural law are the following: 1. It is the law written in the hearts of men (Roman 2:15) 2. For theists, it is mans share in the external Law of God (Panizo, 1964)

3. For St. Thomas, it is the light of natural reason, whereby we discern what is good and what is evil an imprint on us of the divine light (Panizo, 1964) 4. It is the law that says: Do good and avoid evil.

4. When do we say that teacher is a person of good moral character? We say that a teacher is a person of good moral character when he/she possesses all the descriptions of one Christian author about the four ways of describing good moral character: 1) being fully human, 2) being a loving person, 3) being a virtuous person, and 4) being a morally mature person SAQ 4 1. What are values? a. Values are taught and caught; and b. Values have cognitive, affective and behavioral dimension; 2. When do we say that values are transcendental? Do Filipinos believe in transcendental values? Give examples. We say that values are transcendental when they are beyond changing times, beyond space and people. They remain to be a value even if no one values them. They are accepted as value everywhere. Filipinos believe in transcendental values. For example. 3. Are values caught or taught? Give your stand. Both. People are taught values from childhood. People adapt and "caught" values as life experiences change who they are. For an instance, a victim of abuse will chose to not abuse because of
what happened to them. It is a process that goes on all throughout our lives and never stops until we die.

4. Based on Schelers hierarchy of values, what is a life well-lived? Based on Schelers hierarchy of values, a life well-lived is a life that gives greater preference to the higher values (Values of the Holy) rather than the lowest values (Pleasure

Values). Also you will live well a life well if you do not distort the hierarchy of values, i.e. you properly subordinate values in accordance to Schelers hierarchy. SAQ5 1. Does it make a difference if teaching is simply regarded as a profession, not a vocation and a mission? Yes there is a difference if we say teaching is simply regarded as a profession, not a vocation nor a mission. If we say teaching is simply a profession, it means that we only render service to humanity. 2. Compare the status of teaching as a profession to that of other professions. Can you say that it is equally competitive and lucrative? Explain your answer. 3. Of the qualities of a professional, which to is the most important? Why? 4.
