Pavement Design

Class meets on Mondays from 07:30 09:25 AM and Wednesdays from 10:30 11:25 AM (and if required a few Tuesdays from 11:30 AM 12:25 PM) in N-201 Room Class information / documents will be posted on erp.iitkgp.ernet.in Course Description This course presents techniques and methodologies to analyze and design flexible and rigid pavements. The course is designed to provide engineering students exposure to pavement materials and characterization, evaluation of performance, and the many elements of the pavement designs Objectives Develop a working knowledge of HMA and PCC pavements Understand how material characterization affects pavement performance Learn the design steps and techniques used for each pavement type Identify and analyze pavement design problems References Pavement Analysis and Design (2nd Edition), Yang H. Class Format The class will be taught, as much as possible, using an interactive classroom atmosphere with open discussions and questions. Analyses and design case examples will be discussed and worked on in class in a workshop type setting. Assignments will be necessary to stimulate readings and make sure everyone is up to speed on the subjects discussed Professional and Ethical Behavior All students are expected to exhibit a set of professional, ethical and moral behavior as they pursue their profession. CE31510 also includes behavioral expectations on academic integrity and conduct Assignments There will be about 6 to 8 homework assignments throughout the semester. The type of homework assignment will vary depending on the topic being discussed at the time Grading The grade will be based on class participation (discussion in class and attendance), quizzes, homework assignments, mid-term and end-term exams, and the proposal paper. This course will use IITKGP grade system. Approximately, your grade will be based upon the following distribution: Component Class participation Homework Assignments Mid-term Exam End-term Exam Contribution to overall grade 5% 20% 30% 45%

All assignments will be due when the class begins. The assignment details and due dates will be discussed in class. Ten percent of the grade will be subtracted per day from all late assignments, but will only be accepted up to two days after the due date.
