Ms Bishop will join other senior Pacific Island ministers for a two-day trip to Fiji, where the country's planned September elections will be top of the agenda. The federal government hopes these elections - the first elections held in Fiji since Frank Bainimarama's military regime took power in 2006 - can pave the way to democratic reform. Ms Bishop will meet with senior Fiji ministers, registered political parties and civil society organisations to discuss the country's transition to democracy. "My visit will provide an important opportunity to discuss with the Fiji government ways we can build the bilateral relationship into a dynamic and productive partnership," she said in a statement. "My discussions will underline the Australian government's commitment to normalize our relationship as Fiji progresses towards elections." Amnesty International says the foreign minister has an obligation to raise her concerns about alleged human rights abuses in Fiji if the two countries are going to continue engaging. "In the lead-up to elections in Fiji it is imperative that countries including Australia and New Zealand remain vocal and vigilant to any increased crackdown on activists and opposition members," Amnesty International Australia spokesman Michael Hayworth said in a statement. Australia is Fiji's largest bilateral aid donor, and more than 300,000 Australians visit the Pacific islands every year but relations at a diplomatic level have seen better days.

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will use a trip to Fiji to stress Australia's commitment to normalizing its frosty relationship with the Pacific nation.

ONE of Fiji's private islands in the Mamanuca group was named as the third top 'Most Romantic Island' in the world by the ISLANDS magazine. This comes after the magazine's editors considered recent trips over the years to rank the top 10 romantic islands. "We've been to Fiji many times over the years, staying at private islands and other resorts that capture the romantic feeling of being in the South Pacific. "Likuliku Lagoon Resort captures much of what's romantic about Fiji: quiet beauty, exotic flavors, luxury villas, and the feeling that you have all the time in the world together," the magazine reports. India, the world's largest democracy, will provide indelible ink, vehicles and training for election officials to Fiji, where long-awaited general elections are due in September. This was announced by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid during an interaction here with Fijian Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. The South Pacific Ocean island nation last year adopted a new constitution. "We shall be providing Fiji with indelible ink for the elections, vehicles for the Election Commission and training of election and parliamentary officials as our contribution towards Fiji's march towards a democratic polity," Khurshid said in his address. Kubuabola said the elections would be a "truly democratic" with "one man one vote". Describing Fiji as an important partner in the region and as part of India's Look East Policy, Khurshid said India welcomes the "positive developments initiated by the Fiji authorities for the population of Indian origin in recent times". He said both sides have agreed to boost cooperation in the area of agriculture,

back in 1995, the tax paring provisions also dropped out. The Australians have refused to have the tax pairing provisions, he said. Basically what the tax pairing provision means, say for example you have an Australian investor who comes to Fiji and takes advantage of some of our tax free zone or reduced tax rates. They dont pay tax to us, but the Australians dont recognise this. So when they go back to Australia, they have to pay tax on that income thats derived from the income that Fiji has foregone. Fiji Slams Australia 'Cocktail Diplomacy'

Fiji's sanctions continue to restrict the ability of his country's officials to visit Australia on legitimate business. Fiji has accused Australia of engaging in "cocktail diplomacy", calling on Canberra to instead make meaningful reforms such as lifting sanctions against the coup-plagued South Pacific nation's military regime. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is due to start a two-day visit to Fiji on Friday as part of a Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) delegation examining how the regime's plans to hold elections in September this year are progressing. Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said travel sanctions introduced by Canberra continued to restrict the ability of Fijian officials to visit Australia, even when they were on legitimate business with no political implications. Sayed-Khaiyum said he would complain to Bishop about the restrictions, which were imposed in 2009 when ruling military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama reneged on a pledge to hold elections after seizing power in a coup three years earlier. "The reality is that Fiji is on its way to having elections and to still hold out on those types of measures is an abomination," he told the media. He said Australia had recently made overtures "about how we're supposed to be best mates again" but it refused to address fundamental issues such as the sanctions. Sayed-Khaiyum was apparently referring to the Australian High

invite leading members of the regime to a function celebrating Australia Day for the first time since they took control in 2006. At the time, Fiji's public broadcaster quoted Acting High Commissioner Glenn Miles as saying the invitation showed Canberra was enhancing its engagement with Fiji. "(But) there's been no real rolling back of the so-called stance that they've had in place for a long period of time," Sayed-Khaiyum said. "These are some of the issues that need to be put on the table. "There's a lot of people getting invited to cocktails etc but cocktails do not mean that all the issues are being addressed. We're not actually hanging out to be invited to cocktails." When the last PIF delegation visited Fiji in April 2013, it stressed concerns about some of the regime's actions and emphasised that elections must be free and fair. New Zealand, another strong critic of the Fiji regime, had similar sanctions in place until last September when it eased them, saying it wanted to encourage the country's move towards democracy. Fiji's Foreign Minister Inoke Kubuabola said at the time that the move was welcome but "a little too late". Bainimarama has announced he plans to run in the September polls and will stand down as military leader at the end of this month so he is eligible to be a candidate.

India Offers $45M For Parliament Upgrades

The Indian government has offered $45million for the upgrading of the parliamentary complex in Veiuto, Nasese. Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum confirmed this at a press conference. Sayed-Khaiyum said Indias offer does not necessarily mean the upgrading of the physical infrastructure like replacing of roofs and paints. India have also generously offered up to $45m for the upgrade of parliament infrastructure, but when I say infrastructure it does not necessarily mean physical infrastructure like roof or paint but it can also mean IT infrastructure; Library infrastructure." Sayed-Khaiyum said there were also other resources which the government was grateful for and its currently being worked through. Apart from the $45m that the Indian government has offered, they will also provide indelible ink and Mahindra vehicles. He said they hope to enter into further engagement with the Indian government. With Fijis Minister of Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola currently in India with the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Sayed-Khaiyum said they hope to see some finalization on these plans. India has also offered to pay for the education of 40 reporters who are expected to travel to India.

Council Warns Against High Bank Fees

The Consumer Council of Fiji is urging consumers to be aware of the excess fees charged by banking firms which makes loans very expensive. Council chief executive Premila Kumar said they conducted a survey on six banks last month and want to advise consumers of excessive of fees and charges that can make such loans very expensive. The survey was based on establishment fees, approval fees, documentation process, stamp duty, interest rates, monthly service/account maintenance fees and other requirements that consumers have to go through to acquire unsecured personal loan. Based on a typical $3000 personal unsecured loan, the Council found Bank of Baroda and Westpac offered the best deal for consumers who needed quick cash after the festive season." The Council found establishment/ loan approval fees ranged from $100 to $200 for loans amounting to $3,000." Bank of Baroda charges a $60 security documentation fee, and the lowest establishment/loan approval fee of $75 while Bred Bank and BSP had the highest loan establishment fees of $200." All banks charged $10 for stamp duty except HFC where consumers did not have to pay $10 for the stamp duty. Monthly Service/Account maintenance fee ranged from no fee to $10 a month. Westpac did not charge monthly service/account maintenance fee while Bank of Baroda charged a six-monthly maintenance fee of $20. Once again, Bred Bank and BSP changed the highest monthly account service or maintenance fee of $10. The Council also found that interest rates varied from 14% to 17%. Four financial institutions HFC, ANZ,

BSP and Bred Bank charged a variable interest which means the interest rate are susceptible to change by the banks. Thus, consumers signing up for variable interest rate will have difficulty predicting what they will end up paying during the term of the loan. The terms of the unsecured loans are normally short and consumers can have difficulty paying up when interest rates are variable. Westpac and Bank of Baroda offer 14% and 14.75% interest rate respectively fixed for two years. With fixed interest rate, consumers should not expect change in their total loan amount during this fixed interest term. Kumar said though they understand that personal loan is a way for consumers to excess some financial resources, they have urged a greater consumer responsibility. It is common knowledge that a large majority of bank customers in Fiji fail to do bank shopping. Instead, they continue being a loyal customer of a bank that provided its services to their parents or grandparents without considering which bank is giving better financial products at an affordable rate. Kumar has advised that personal loans be taken only for necessary needs and not for wants. Consumers should be aware that their financial status can change due to various reasons such as loss of job, sickness, personal disasters, rise in cost of living and so forth." The debt management and credit advisory services are available for consumers who need more information or are seeking assistance regarding their debt or intending to take loan. This service is free and all information will be kept confidential at the Consumer Council, Kumar concluded.

If anyone hits or mistreats a woman in any way, they had better watch out, says Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. He said men who engage in such acts will face the full brunt of the law. Bainimarama made the comments while opening the women's resource centre in Tavuki. In his address, the head of government highlighted the number of cases before the courts at the present time of which there are 739 cases of sexual assault. There are a further 739 cases pending in all courts, including the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Of these 477 are cases of sexual assault against people over the age of 13. There are another 262 cases of child sexual assault. "It has to stop," Bainimarama said. "The days of any lenient attitude to raping, demeaning, mistreating and exploiting women are over. I am issuing instructions to the police that they are to adopt a policy of zero tolerance of all violence against women. He also called on Fijian men to change

their attitude towards women saying that women are not possessions to be used as they please. "Real men dont rape women or sexually abuse children. Real men dont beat women. Weak men beat women. Pathetic men. Men who use violence to get their way. Its criminal and its unacceptable," Bainimarama said. "So I appeal to every Fijian male. Be a man. Treat women properly. Treasure them. Protect them. They are the heart of the family, the backbone of our communities. They are our partners. They are just as important as men. So set an example to your children and treat them in the way they deserve to be treated, the way they must be treated. The same goes for our children. We should be deeply ashamed as a nation that there are 262 child sexual assault cases currently before our courts." Bainimarama also called on Fijian women to exercise their rights to ensure their protection saying they "must no longer accept being mistreated."

Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be announcing more details about his party early next month. He made the comment in his address at the opening of the Vunisea telecentre in Kadavu this morning. "I will be running in this election at the head of a new political movement that I will announce at the beginning of next month," he said. Bainimarama further urged young Fijians to register to vote saying he believes "that the votes of young Fijians will largely determine the election outcome." "I appeal to Fijis young people to turn their backs on the politics of the past and embrace my vision of a new and better Fiji," Bainimarama said. "Will you vote to drag Fiji back into the past? Or will you vote to give yourself a place in its brighter future? Think carefully about the choice you make. It is for both yourself and your nation." Meanwhile, the new complex in Vunisea is the 21st telecentre to be opened in the country with 20 already in operation in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Ovalau. It is the first to be opened in one of Fiji's remote islands. The Vunisea centre is expected to service villagers living near and around Vunisea. Students of Vunisea Secondary Schools where only one mini laptop was available for 260 students to share will also benefit from the newly opened telecentre.

A man serving time for burglary and theft, having made off with more than $13,000 worth of items in a home break-in in Sigatoka last year, has had his time reduced by a high court in Lautoka following a successful appeal. High court Judge Justice Sudharshana De Silva quashed Manoa Rayawa's initial sentence of two years, 10 months and 28 days with respect to the first charge of burglary while stating no objection to the sentence of eight months imprisonment for the second count of theft. He will now serve seven months. The court heard that Rayawa was sentenced on August 6, 2013 by a magistrates court in Sigatoka for his role in the break in on June 26, 2013 where he and another person made off

with items worth $13,535. Justice De Silva varied the sentence in respect to count of burglary saying the learned magistrate "had erred by not awarding the appellant separate deduction for his guilty plea." I deduct six months for the mitigating factors of personal circumstances, recovery of all items and remorse," he said. "Further 10 months to be deducted for the guilty plea. "The whole reason we invested in Fiji Airways was based on a strategic decision that was made because of our interests in resorts like the InterContinetal Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, Holiday Inn and the soon-to-be opened Grand Pacific Hotel." Fiji Airways managing director and CEO Stefan Pichler acknowledged the FNPF for its assistance in enabling the airline to purchase three new Airbus A330-200 aircraft. of schedule as a result of our current good cash flow and expect to complete the pay-off of the loan in time," Mr Pichler said. "I'm unable to comment on the specifics of our commercial arrangement but I will add that the FNPF is a very valued strategic partner." The reporter queried whether the airline would look to FNPF to secure funding for the purchase of new aircraft as outlined in Fiji Airway's five-year growth plan. "We are in the early stages of our aircraft market assessment and have so far received overwhelming feedback of international finance institutions. "Our five-year growth plan to sustainable profitability seems to attract many offers and once we have finished our internal evaluations of the very best offer for each additional aircraft, we will know who our financing partners will be." The FNPF lent $181m to the then Air Pacific at an interest rate of 8.75 per cent. The loan generated $12m annually for FNPF members.

A high court in Suva has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 30 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of indecently assaulting a six-year-old girl at a village in Namosi in 2012. Alifereti Kavurunalase is not eligible for parole until he has served 24 months. High Court Judge Justice Janaka Bandara reduced six months from Kavurunalase's initial term for the time he had spent remanded in custody. In sentencing Kavurunalase, Justice Bandara said the court was concerned about the psychological trauma that the victim experienced "from the point of the indecent assault until she gave evidence in court." "This court witnessed the pain of a 8-year-old girl when she described her sexual experience with the accused. It is a pain which will be with her for the rest of her life," Justice Bandara said. "It is a pain which will devastate her

Fiji's Minister for Education Filipe Bole officiated at the opening of the FJ$20million Fulton University College at its present home at the foot of the 'Sleeping Giant' in Sabeto. The first semester is expected to begin on February 24. The official opening comes less than three years since the official groundbreaking ceremony in late 2011. It is also a welcomed development for new students and continuing students following the closure of the school at its old site in Tailevu last year after being home to students from Fiji and the region for 72 years. The opening was an extravagant affair with some of the current students turning out in their respective traditional Pacific Island wear and attended by distinguished guests from the Seventhday Adventist Church including the president of the church, Dr Ted Wilson, and executives of the college. In his advise to students, Bole quoted from the bible saying "to whom much is given, much is expected, calling on students to take their studies very seriously.

social relationships with shame, guilt, embarrassment and frustration. Matter gets worse, when the perpetrator is a close relative whom she was taught to trust and love. This background does not warrant the final sentence of three years to be suspended. The accused will receive an immediate custodial term." The court heard that at about 3pm on September 19, 2012, at Mau village, the young girl was in a kitchen with a friend when Kavurunalase entered, chased the victim's friend before indecently assaulting the little girl. The victim's friend started screaming at which time Kavurunalase fled. He was initially charged with two counts of rape to which he pleaded not guilty. However, he pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault. The charged had to be amended to Indecent Assault to which Kavurunalase pleaded guilty on February 4, 2014.

"A higher education is the single best investment you can make in your future and I am proud of all students who are making that investment whether it is at Fulton University College or for any other higher institution in Fiji." Bole also acknowledged the hard work put in by the Fulton University College board, the relocation committee, the principal, staff, students and the Seventh Day Adventist Family in Fiji and the Pacific region. The newly opened complex features student residences which will accommodate 240 students while the dining room can accommodate 420. The library has a seating capacity of 200 students with housing to be provided on campus for 20 married student families, essential staff and international faculty. Included in the present set-up are the teaching spaces, a computer laboratory and a curriculum resource lab. The decision to relocate the SDA institution to Nadi had been in the pipeline since 2010 after an incident revolving around land issues.

Fijis Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola addressed the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on Tuesday afternoon on Fijis progress towards elections and also on Fiji's foreign relations. In his statement, Minister Kubuabola underscored the significance of the upcoming national elections that will take place by September as a historical milestone for the people of Fiji, where for the first time in its history, Fiji will hold free, fair and democratic elections. He further informed the Council about the reforms and the positive changes that the Government had put in place since 2006 in its efforts to Build a Better Fiji for All'. In his address, he also discussed the developments in Fiji's foreign relations over the years to what it has achieved to date. 'I must admit that Fiji has become a more confident and stronger nation in its conduct of diplomacy among the international community. Fiji has grown and embraces itself as a good global citizen with full respect for international law and practice, Minister Kubuabola said.

Fiji Foreign Minister Briefs Indian Council Of World Affairs On Fijis Elections Progress
The Fijian Government is appreciative of the support of our partners towards our efforts to expand our relations with all the members of the UN member countries and further deepen its relations with its friends, like India. The ICWA is an important national institution that is devoted exclusively to the study of international relations and foreign affairs. The Vice President of India is the ex-officio President of the institution. The Minister also met with Tariq Anwar, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries to discuss the three Memoranda of Understanding that will be signed between the two governments during the ministerial bilateral. The signing of three MOUs on Wednesday is a strong indication of our strengthened bilateral relations and we are grateful to the Government of India for her continued support to the government and the people of Fiji. Other issues on the table include a single overarching MOU on agriculture to ease the existing bureaucratic red tape on having an MOU for each individual area of cooperation.

Fijian Ambassador Presents Credential To President Of Lebanon

Fijis resident envoy to the United Arab Emirates, Ambassador Robin Nair recently presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Lebanon, His Excellency Michel Suleiman. Ambassador Nair presented his credentials as Fijis first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic and will serve as the non resident Ambassador from Abu Dhabi, in the UAE. In his statement, Ambassador Nair conveyed the greetings from the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who, he said, knows Lebanon well as the first Commander of the Fiji Batt in Lebanon, and added that Fijis presence in the Middle East began in Lebanon in 1978, under the Banner of UNIFIL as UN peace-keepers. Ambassador Nair said that despite Fijis historic presence in the areas of peacekeeping, more attention will be given to areas that can strengthen relations between Fiji and the Middle East. We are remembered in the Middle East as a peace-keeping nation but, now Fiji wishes to be recognized also as a Hub of Commerce, Industry, Finance and Trading in the South Pacific region with stability and a most positive environment for investment, and business development in the Pacific Region. Ambassador Nair also acknowledged Lebanons pivotal role of in regional stability and economic development. Now that the formal relationship between the two countries has been sealed and endorsed, I encourage the world-renowned and resourceful Lebanese businessman and the private sector to explore business

and investment opportunities in Fiji. Lebanon and Fijis current relationship would enable the establishment of partnerships and initiate discussion in mutual areas of interest like tourism, industrialization and agriculture, as both countries have similar ambitions on progressive economic growth and infrastructure development, Ambassador Nair said. His Excellency President Michel Suleiman expressed his delight on this recent development and highlighted his gratitude to Fijis role in peacekeeping services. I am surprised that it has taken us this long for our two countries to be united more formally, when your people have been so well-known to us, helping our nation in need with world-renowned soldiers. I am very happy to welcome you and to thank your country, through

you, for being always ready to come in harms way to preserve regional peace and stability. Many of your young men have sacrificed their lives for our cause and lie buried in heroism, becoming a part parcel of our country. I look forward to strengthening our relations also through economic ties. Lebanese people are well-known for their entrepreneurship throughout the world and we would like to see more of them doing business in Fiji. Ambassador Nair also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monsieur Adnan MANSOUR and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HQ in Beirut. The Secretary General invited Fiji to use its presence in the region to attend Arab League Meetings, in order to be recognised more deeply in the region for Fijis contribution and leadership

to international affairs and to the peace and stability in their region. The issues surrounding visas for our UN Peacekeepers were also discussed, initiating the need for a Visa Agreement between the two countries. This will also facilitate ease of travel for Traders and Investors to Fiji. Ambassador Nair briefed the Foreign Ministry on the successful launch of Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) and its role in developing a roadmap to sustainable development of the region, through the green and blue economies. He said that Fiji was also keen to introduce its new development partners to the needs of the region as well through PIDF. Ambassador Nair also met Mr Mohamed Choucair, the Chairman of Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and also the President of Middle Eastern Chambers of Commerce, with its membership reaching out to Chambers from the Greater Middle Eastern Region. Mr Choucair proposed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Countries Chambers to facilitate Trade and Investment, and enhance private sector involvement in Nation Building. He provided a template for such a MoU. Ambassador Nair added that Fiji had stationed itself within reach and within the central theatres of Trade, Investment, Industrialization, Science and Technology in the Mediterranean region as well. He also discussed with Mr Choucair Fijis desire to open a Honorary Consulate in Beirut. Ambassador Nair was accompanied by Fijis Counsellor at the UAE Embassy Aliki Salusalu.

The donations will assist the Tongan health department to meet the needs of their communities and we extend our (Fijis) well wishers to Tonga in providing health care needs during this challenging period, he said. The Fijian Government will continue to assist out regional neighbours during difficult situation if we are called upon. The one tonne load of equipment left Port Vuda Marina on board two yachts belonging to Sea Mercy a charitable organisation. The gesture of the Fijian government towards its closest neighbor is very warm and encouraging said Xavier Zeitoun a captain on one of the two yachts. New Legal Practitioners Admitted To The Bar

Attracting and retaining the best international talent to fill skills shortages in key occupations is critical to Canadas economic success.
- Hon. Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Employment and Social Development

More than five years of hard work and determination paid off for 25-year-old barrister and solicitor, Esiteri Donata Radrole, who was admitted to the legal Bar. Miss Radrole was amongst 22 other Law graduates from the University of the South Pacific (USP) who were sworn in as new Barristers and Solicitors by Chief Justice, Mr Anthony Gates at Suvas Supreme Court. Miss Radrole, who is the first barrister and solicitor from Vuinadi Village, Koroalau in Savusavu said that today is the happiest day of her life as she begins her career in Fijis legal fraternity. It is a very special day for me and I am proud to be here today with my parents, friends and relatives after all those years of study. There were a lot challenges in the beginning and at first, I thought it was never ending but I am so happy that finally this day has arrived, Miss Radrole said. My parents really supported me throughout my studies at the USP. Coming away from my family in Vuinadi village to Viti Levu for over five years of study was a big challenge. I am also glad that I got iTaukei Affairs scholarship in 2009 to complete my degree in Suva and Vanuatu, Miss Radrole said. She is currently employed as an intern at Rigsby Law in Nausori but hopes to establish a new law firm with her friends in the future. I want to uphold the importance of maintaining professionalism and

ethical relationship with our clients and the country as a whole, Miss Radrole added. Tavua barrister and lawyer, Nilema Samantha was also a proud daughter as her dream of joining the legal fraternity got fulfilled. I am really excited and it is a proud moment for my family as well. I am here today because of the immense support from my mothers brother, Mr Raghwan. He has supported me financially since childhood, Miss Samantha said. The former Tavua College student said while she faced enormous struggles at the beginning of her studies, the assistance and support from lecturers enabled her to turn her dream into a reality. Justice Anthony Gates reminded the newly admitted practitioner on the importance of ethics in their profession. You have each taken an oath or affirmation that you will truly and honestly conduct yourself in the practice as a legal practitioner according to the best of your knowledge and ability, Mr Justice Gates said. We hope that oath will remind you of your duties to act at all times as a practitioner professionally devoted to your clients and to act as a responsible, committed, honourable and noble officer of the court. And further that you will at all times be courteous to court, counsel, litigants, and witnesses, whilst maintaining moral courage and demonstrating true independence.

Millions of dollars have been paid out in compensation to families of those in the military killed or wounded while serving Fiji. It came in a major campaign to help those who had been left without help. Prime Minister and Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama made this revelation at a farewell church service in Nadi. He said between 2000 and 3000 cases of compensation claims were with the Ministry of Labour. A military commissioned team was sent to clear the backlog. He described the exercise as an untold story where the team went in and completed the processing of the claims. He said as a result many who had waited and cried for many years finally received a payout. He said prior to that only families of

those killed or wounded while on duty from 1996/1997 were covered. There was no proper documentation for those who died or were wounded since 1978. He said the military went in and sorted out the papers. As a result the compensations were paid. This was one of the highlights of the achievements by the RFMF since 2000 when they began the new journey to a new and better Fiji. We were spat at but we were firm in our resolve because we believed we were doing the right thing, he said He said the After Care Fund which was initially set up for World War I, World War II, Malayan campaign and Christmas Islands ex-servicemen was expanded to cover for those who served in Sinai and Lebanon. Families of those who were wounded or killed in the Middle East received payments.

Britains River Thames On Flood Alert As Blame Game Rages

THOUSANDS of homes in southeast England are braced for flooding after the River Thames burst its banks, as a political row over the handling of devastating winter storms erupted into the open.

The Environment Agency issued 14 severe flood warnings meaning lives are at risk for the Thames in the affluent counties of Surrey and Berkshire to the west of London. Some areas are already under water, including parts of the Great Windsor Park, near the Queens castle at Windsor, which itself is built on higher ground. London itself is protected by the Thames Barrier, although a suburb to the south of the capital, Croydon, announced plans to divert rising floodwaters caused by heavy rain away from homes and businesses by pumping them into a pedestrian underpass. Parts of the southwest of England have been under water for weeks after the wettest January since 1766, with more bad weather expected over the coming days. Forecasters at the Met Office said the run of winter storms, which have brought heavy rain and strong winds and seen high waves batter the English coastline, has been exceptional in its duration. But there has been a growing tide of criticism at the official response, which has erupted into a full-blown political row. Many people in Somerset, one of the hardest-hit counties in the southwest, blame the devastating floods on the failure of the Environment Agency a government body to dredge local rivers.

New Zealand prime minister John Key says some New Zealanders fighting with anti-government forces in Syria hold dual Australian nationality. He says another group that was attempting to go to Syria has been stopped, and that his government has cancelled the passports of some of the

New Zealanders Fighting In Syria Hold Dual Australian Nationality: NZ PM

Communities minister Eric Pickles joined the attack on Sunday, suggesting the government perhaps relied too much on the Environment Agencys advice on flood prevention. I am really sorry that we took the advice ... we thought we were dealing with experts, Mr Pickles, a member of Prime Minister David Camerons Conservative party, told BBC TV. Chris Smith, the head of the Environment Agency, hit back on Monday and accused ministers for holding back vital funds. When I hear someone criticising the expertise and professionalism of my staff in the Environment Agency who know more about flood risk management 100 times more about flood risk management than any politician ever does, I am not going to sit idly by, he said. Smith, a former minister for the now opposition Labour government, said the Treasury had limited the amount the agency could spend on flood management in Somerset. The prime minister last week announced 130 million pounds ($240 million) in extra funding for emergency repairs and maintenance. Mr Cameron paid his first visit to Somerset, where the Royal Marines have been deployed to help with sandbagging, on Friday and on Monday was due to tour storm-affected areas in the southwest counties of Devon and Cornwall.

A Muslim cleric has been charged in Sydney over the alleged illegal marriage of a 13-year-old girl earlier this year. The 35-year-old was arrested outside Parramatta Police Station. The cleric, from the Hunter region, has been charged with solemnisation of a marriage by an unauthorised person. He has been released on strict bail conditions and is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court in April. The marriage has no legal standing in Australia because of the girl's age. A 26-year-old Lebanese national remains in custody after being charged last week with child sex offences. Police say he met and married the 13-year-old girl in the Hunter region, where he allegedly began a sexual relationship with her. The man and girl then moved to Sydney's west earlier this year. The relationship came to light when the man tried to enrol the girl at a high school. Police also questioned the girl's parents last week and said they believed the

parents had a hand in arranging the marriage. Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans from the Child Abuse Squad said after today's arrest that more charges may still be laid in the months ahead. "We're still investigating the matter, it's only early days. We only received the allegation on, I think it was last Thursday," he said. "But there may be other persons charged or even further charges in relation to people who have already been charged in relation to this." New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell has praised police for charging the cleric over the marriage. "I'm delighted charges have been laid against the celebrant who allegedly solemnized this wedding that was clearly illegal," he said. "We have rules in this country, in this state, about those who celebrate marriages, whether they are religious celebrants or civil celebrants. "Those rules say that people have to be over the age of 18 unless a court has specified otherwise."

US Embassy Warns Of Possible Guyana Threat

THE US Embassy in Guyana has warned that it has received "unconfirmed threat information" about a regional airline's flights to the United States and urged Americans to avoid using the carrier. The terse message about the Caribbean Airlines flights is unusual for being so specific about a potential threat. It was posted last Sunday on the embassy's website. It advised all US citizens in Guyana to make alternate travel arrangements up to Wednesday if they were planning on travelling home on flights with Caribbean Airlines. The airline's representative for Guyana, Carl Stuart, said the company has elevated "our level of security involving the police, the military and other agencies." "We have been on this since Friday," he told The Associated Press. "We are on top of this and flights will continue as normal, but we are taking no chances." In 2007, a former member of Guyana's parliament and a naturalised US citizen from Guyana were among four people convicted of participating in a failed plot by a small group of militant Muslims to firebomb John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Double Tax Agreement In Force

A NEW double tax agreement between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea is now in force, New Zealand Revenue Minister Todd McClay announced on Monday. "Trade in the Pacific and particularly with Papua New Guinea is taking on greater importance for New Zealand. This agreement will strengthen international cross-border trade and investment partnerships for the benefit of businesses, investors and taxpayers in both countries," Mr McClay says. "The agreement recently came into effect after being signed by both countries in 2012. It will give businesses greater certainty over the tax treatment of cross-border investment income, reduce compliance costs for both New Zealand and PNG investors, and will lower withholding tax rates. "This agreement further strengthens our network of double tax agreements, and widens New Zealand's tax information exchange network, which is important in helping authorities prevent tax evasion and avoidance." Double tax agreements help encourage growth and promote cross-border trade by preventing businesses and individuals from being taxed twice on income earned in the other country. "This government wants New Zealand businesses to operate competitively on the global stage. Double tax agreements help provide the business and tax environment to support them to do that," Mr McClay says.

fighters and would-be fighters. Mr Key has not been specific about numbers, saying only that fewer than 10 passports overall have been cancelled since 2005. He says that, like Australia, New Zealand is concerned about the possible radicalisation of New Zealand fighters in Syria.

Kiwi Hang-Glider Pilot Jailed Over Fatal Flight

A New Zealand hang-glider pilot who failed to connect a woman on a tandem flight, causing her to fall 300 metres to her death, has been sentenced to five months in a Canadian jail. William Jon Orders, 51, entered a guilty plea last week to a charge of criminal negligence causing the death of Lenami Godinez-Avila, 28, shortly after taking off for a flight across British Columbia's Fraser Valley in April 2012, Canadian media reported. Orders did not hook Ms Godinez-Avila to the hang-glider and also failed to conduct a required safety check before taking off, despite having 18 years' experience and recently completing a re-certification course. After he landed, he swallowed a memory card containing a video of the incident, for which he was also charged with obstruction of justice, however this charge was stayed by the Crown. The contents of the video were described to the court last week, including details of how Ms GodinezAvila desperately tried in vain to cling on to the glider when she realised she was not properly secured. It also shows Orders attempting to clip her in, but she slips and plummets to her death, The Globe and Mail reported. Ms Godinez-Avila, a Mexican student at the University of British Columbia, was celebrating an anniversary with her boyfriend. Orders was sentenced to five months in jail, including three years probation, during which time he will be banned from hang-gliding and must educate others about the incident. He has since given up hang-gliding and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, the court heard. Apologising to Ms Godinez-Avila's family after his guilty plea, he said: "I did tandem hang-gliding to make people proud of their accomplishments, that they may overcome fear of height, or live their dream of flying like a bird. "All those previous flights mean nothing to me now.''

Man-Eating Tigress Claims 10Th Victim

A "catastrophic" ice storm wreaking havoc in the American South is now poised to pummel the eastern seaboard, say forecasters. More than 350,000 people are reportedly without power and 3,300 US flights have been cancelled due to ice and strong winds. Nearly empty roadways were reported as many heeded warnings to stay indoors. North Carolina and Virginia are bracing for up to 1ft (30cm) of snow as the storm rolls north. Up to 1in (2.54cm) of ice combined with wind gusts of up to 30 mph (48 kph) snapped tree limbs and power lines in the South, cutting power to hundreds of thousands of residents. The storm is forecast to drop up to 8in of snow in Washington DC and up to 10in in New York. The National Weather Service said it was an event of "historical proportions", drawing comparisons with similar weather systems that struck the Atlanta area in 2000 and 1973. At least nine traffic deaths have already been blamed on the storm, including

three people killed when an ambulance slid off an icy Texas road and caught fire. But residents in Georgia appeared to have heeded official warnings after a sudden late-January storm stranded thousands of children in schools and saw drivers abandon their cars in an epic traffic jam around the city of Atlanta. George Governor Nathan Deal thanked the neighbouring state of Kentucky for offering salt and sand for the roads from their own caches. "We all try to help each other when we can," he said. Mr Deal told those waiting for power to be restored to "be patient", saying he was hearing of "good response times" from the state's power firms. Meanwhile, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory urged residents to "stay smart", asking people to charge their mobile phones and find batteries for radios and flashlights in anticipation of power cuts. Traffic was snarled in the state, especially in the city of Raleigh, as the snow began to fall in the early evening and prevented crews from clearing roads.

A tiger prowling near villages in northern India has killed its 10th person in six weeks, a day after eluding a trap set by hunters using a live calf as bait. The female tiger is believed to have strayed from Jim Corbett National Park, which was established in 1936 to provide endangered Bengal tigers with safe territory. The big cat's latest victim was a 50-year-old man who was collecting firewood in the forest outside Kalgarh village in Uttarakhand state, according to Saket Badola, deputy director of the national park. The animal ate parts of the man's leg and abdomen before being scared away by villagers waving shovels and metal rods. The tigress began its killing spree on December 29 when it pounced on a 21-year-old man who had wandered into sugar cane fields in Moradabad district for his morning ablutions. A week later, on January 5, it claimed its second victim. Two days after that, a teenage girl was mauled to death. Until then, the tigress had not eaten its victims. But over the following days it killed another two villagers, in both cases consuming body parts and apparently developing a taste for human flesh. It then disappeared back into the national park, but emerged 16 days later to kill again. Officials said the tiger had crossed several major national highways, a river and moved through villages on the prowl. Belinda Wright, one of India's leading tiger conservationists, said officials had told her the first nine victims had been confirmed as those of a single, breeding tigress which may be wounded or injured: the pawprints were identical but uneven, which suggested it may have a limp. Hunters had almost nabbed the tiger a day before the latest attack, using a bovine calf for prey. "On Saturday night the tigress almost fell in a trap and was close to the calf," Mr Badola said.

"But she did not attack the bait and left silently." Thousands of terrified villagers have been told to watch out for the animal and to avoid the forests. "The animal has started attacking humans because it is not getting its natural prey," said Rupek De, chief wildlife warden of Uttar Pradesh. He said the hunters hired to kill the animal were having trouble tracking it in dense forests. The team also was understaffed; only three of the six hunters hired for the job showed up for work, Mr De said. On Sunday, angry villagers seized a national forestry office, demanding protection and compensation for the families of the dead. India's wild tigers are considered endangered because of rampant poaching and shrinking habitat. Ms Wright said the man-eater's 10 victims made it one of the most prolific in recent years, although some of those pursued by Jim Corbett, the legendary tiger hunter turned conservationist after whom the national park is named, were said to have killed and eaten more than 400 people. She blamed the worsening "humananimal conflict" in India for the latest killings and said the spread of mobile phones has been a factor. After one of the killings a crowd of thousands of local people arrived to track down the tigress and disturbed its retreat back into the forest. "Initially we had a man-killer, maybe that can be put down to these crowds," she said. "And then she started eating people and unfortunately when that happens there is no alternative but to remove it. It can no longer be a wild tiger." Ms Wright and local officials hope the tigress, believed to be four years old, can be captured rather than killed. "There are so few breeding tigresses that every one is precious," she said. "They can survive with the loss of a few young or male tigers, but not feeding females. It's a tragedy."

Nielsen Survey Finds 40 Per Cent Of Young US Adults Uses Social Media In The Bathroom
A SURVEY has found 40 per cent of US adults between the ages of 18 and 24 uses social media in the bathroom. while nearly half also own digital video recorders and gaming consoles. The average consumer spends about 60 hours a week viewing content across various platforms, Nielsen found. Multi-tasking is common; 84 per cent of smartphone and tablet owners say they use their devices as second screens while watching TV. Its an incredibly exciting evolution in the ways people are using devices to get media, said Megan Clarken, Nielsen executive vice president. While sports events generated the most Twitter postings last year, more than 400 million, TV series also had impressive numbers. The top three: Breaking Bad with 6 million tweets, The Walking Dead with 4.9 million and American Horror Story: Coven with 2.9 million. And TV viewers there increasingly are watching programs on their own schedule, according to a Nielsen company media study. In the past year, time-shifting of television content grew by almost two hours, averaging 13 hours per month, the study found. Viewers averaged nearly 134 hours of live TV viewing a month in 2013, down nearly three hours from 2012. Television still remains central to media consumption, the study found, despite the increase in time-shifted viewing and streaming video through a computer or smartphone. On average, American consumers own four digital devices, the report found. The majority of US households own high-definition TV sets, internetconnected computers and smartphones,

Indian-American Pharmacist Sentenced To Two Years For Fraud

An Indian-American pharmacist has been sentenced to two years in prison for paying bribes and kickbacks to physicians for patient referrals. Raghuveer Nayak, a former fundraiser and key figure in the senate seat scandal of now jailed Chicago governor Rod Blagojevich, was sentenced on Tuesday with a fine of $500,000 by US district court judge Robert Gettleman, who said the 59-year-old pharmacist had seriously "corrupted the doctorpatient relationship". He had pleaded guilty last year to federal fraud and tax charges. Nayak, who owns several surgery centres in Illinois and Indiana, turned tearful as he apologized in the court for letting down his family and community. "These mistakes are mine and mine only," he said. "I stand before you asking for forgiveness." Nayak's alleged role in Blagojevich's attempted sale of a US Senate seat nearly five years ago, however, was not taken into account by the judge while sentencing him. "When it comes to the doctorpatient relationship, we all rely on our physicians to make the best recommendation possible," said Gettleman who also ordered Nayak to pay $23,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Nayak had been approached by federal agents on the day Blagojevich was arrested and decided to cooperate with authorities in return for leniency. He had allegedly spoken to then US Representative Jesse Jackson at an October 2008 meeting about raising campaign cash for Blagojevich in return for Jackson's appointment to succeed newly elected President Barack Obama in the Senate. While Blagojevich was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison Nayak was never charged in the scandal. Prosecutors said in court filings last month that the scandal should be kept in mind as it showed his "willingness to corrupt." "In both contexts, he has proved that he believes money buys influence," prosecutors said. Nayak's profits depended upon doctors bringing patients for surgery to his outpatient facilities rather than to a traditional hospital, an act for which he paid them in exchange. Prosecutors have alleged that for over 10 years, Nayak doled out more than 80,000 dollars in cash bribes and paid for more than three million dollars in advertising for doctors in return for referrals.

A central Auckland real estate agent who listed a $1 million house for tens of thousands less than the sale price has been censured and fined $1000. Harcourts Mt Eden and Epsom agent Mike Emery has been found to have engaged in unsatisfactory conduct while he and another agent were tasked with selling the property by auction at the end of 2012. The seller complained to the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) that the property was listed on the Harcourts website in the wrong price bracket, without proper disclosure and transparency. The property was advertised in the $700,000 to $800,000 bracket when it should have been listed in the $850,000 to $950,000 bracket. The complainant claimed that affected bids on the property, which did not reach reserve at auction. The property later sold through a different agency for $993,000. Mr Emery told the REAA's complaints

assessment committee he was not responsible for preparing the website listing. However, he did not believe the property was in the wrong price bracket and he maintained the complainant's asking price was simply too high. The other Harcourts agent, who was not named by the REAA, admitted the property was listed in the wrong price bracket by mistake. The REAA found Mr Emery had a duty of care to ensure all information was correct before publication. "Whether by mistake or not the reality is that the advertised price did not reflect the pricing expectations agreed with the complainant and expected by her.'' The REAA censured Mr Emery, fined him $1000 and ordered him to refund $1000 of the marketing fee the complainant paid to Harcourts. The complainant also alleged Mr Emery manipulated the Harcourts website for a later screenshot, failed to give her a copy of the listing agreement

Arrest In Mexico Deaths Of Edward Kular, Nina Discombe

Wal-Mart Incorrectly Charges Enviro Fee For Speaker Wire

Thunder Bay's Brad Oulton noticed an extra $4 charge on his receipt, alerted Wal-Mart to the error
A national chain store has apologized after a Thunder Bay man complained he was improperly charged an environmental handling fee. Brad Oulton bought a $25 set of speaker wire at Wal-Mart on Fort William Road last week. On his way out the door, he noticed an extra $4 charge on the receipt. "I was concerned that Wal-Mart was charging consumers fees on items that weren't supposed to be charged fees on, he told CBC News. The non-profit organization that collects environmental handling fees in Ontario said Oulton should not have been charged the fee. "The fee would apply to amplifiers and speakers, but not wires like this," Ontario Electronic Stewardship communications director Sandra Pakosh wrote in an email. Changes coming Wal-Mart said it apologizes for the mistake, and is working to correct the issue. "We take this issue very seriously and wish to apologize to the customer for any inconvenience we have caused," Wal-Mart public relations manager Rosalyn Carneiro told CBC News in an email. "We thank him for bringing this to our attention and anticipate having the issue corrected in approximately 48 hours, after which time the customer can return to the store for a refund of the fee." Oulton said products that come with an environmental fee should be more clearly marked. "There should be some identification on the product," he said. "Then you would know before you [go] to the check-out that there was some kind of fee applied to it." A spokesperson for the provincial Ministry of the Environment said that could happen soon. "The proposed Waste Reduction Act would eliminate surprise 'eco-fees' at the cash register by requiring any recycling charge to be included in the advertised and shelf prices," Mark Rabbior told CBC News in an email.

A Tim Hortons store is liable for over $69,000 after hot soup caused a "personal tsunami" of pain in a Montreal woman's mouth, a judge has ruled. The judge agreed with Lucie Laflamme's claim that the cream of potato and bacon soup was "excessively hot" and caused "severe burning" and "years of pain and loss of taste." On Aug. 14, 1998, the city engineering technician entered the restaurant and ordered soup while nursing a sore throat, said Superior Court judge Mark G. Laflamme said she never returned to her job, went on permanent disability and was laid off in 2006. She claimed the Tim's "knew or should have known" that the soup was excessively hot. The company contends the soup was served "at about 170 (degrees) Fahrenheit," which they said was an industry standard. But the judge pointed to the defendants' own admission that their soup was, in fact, heated to a level that could have caused "serious" mouth burns. Furthermore, Peacock said the restaurant's bowls did not include warnings to that effect. He awarded Laflamme $69,454.59 in damages.

Canada's Largest Bakery Business Sold To Mexican Company

Canada Bread, the country's largest bakery business, has been bought by a Mexican company in a deal valued at $1.83 billion. The bread maker, which produces food under Dempsters, Bon Matin and other brands, will be acquired by Grupo Bimbo for $72 per share in cash, with the support of its parent Maple Leaf Foods (TSX:MFI), the companies announced on Wednesday. That's about seven per cent above Canada Bread's recent stock price and 31 per cent higher than when it was put up for sale. Maple Leaf Foods owns a 90 per cent stake in the Canada Bread bakery business, which has been pressured by flagging sales as consumers buy fewer bread products. The parent company has been scouring its operations for cost savings as part of a restructuring plan that would improve the profits of the overall business, which is primarily focused on meat products. It hopes to complete the process by next year. The hunt to sell Canada Bread was first announced last October, though at the time it was only searching for potential suitors. Two Canada Bread factories were closed in early 2013 in Grand Falls, N.B., and Edmonton. Maple Leaf Foods has already sold its Rothsay rendering business, which handles edible and inedible animal by-products, to Darling International, which is based in Texas. Maple Leaf Foods also reached agreements to sell its commercial turkey farms, hatchery operation and breeding farms to two Ontario-based companies. "We've got a great plan in front of us, and we're having a very rocky road in transition," said Michael McCain, Maple Leaf Foods president and CEO in a conference call. "I don't mean to minimize it, but it is transitional, and we're excited about the outcome when it's done." Grupo Bimbo, which makes products under such brands as Sara Lee, Mrs. Baird's and Entenmann's, operates in the United States and 18 countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. It trades on the Mexican stock exchange. "Canada Bread brings a remarkable portfolio of market leading brands that complement our global business, as well as a track record of highly profitable performance," said Grupo Bimbo chief executive Daniel Servitje in a release. Canada Bread shares rose nearly five per cent, or $4.79 to $72.05, on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Maple Leaf shares were ahead 35 cents to $16.19.

Bouncy Castles Cause More Injuries Than Roller Coasters: Study

Bouncy castles might seem like fun, but they cause more injuries in children than amusement park rides, a new Canadian study has found. "Inflatable bounces are just big bags of air. Children can easily collide with each other, land in a bad position or even fall off the device and potentially seriously hurt themselves," researcher Kathryn Woodcock of Toronto's Ryerson University said in a release about the study. The risk of getting injured while on an

amusement park ride is very low, the study found. There are no Canadian reporting regulations for amusement park ride injuries, so Woodcock looked at American statistics collected in 2010 through the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. She found 42% of injuries were from inflatable bounces, 20% from roller coasters, and 3% from each carousels and bumper cars. One third of injuries did not specify the ride.

Vancouver's Olympic Cauldron Finally Fired Up

Owners who fail to register a secondary suite face a $1,000 fine

The City of Surrey, B.C., is cracking down on illegal secondary suites by actively pursuing owners advertising online. Councillor Barinder Rasode says bylaw officers are combing through rental listings looking for the illegal suites. "What they are doing is also looking through ads in local papers, classifieds and Craigslist to see people who are advertising their suites and crossreferencing them with our database," said Rasode. Those who fail to register their suite face a fine of up to $1,000. Since the beginning of the month, when the bylaw took effect, about 3,000 new suites have been registered, but so far no fines have been issued. It is all good news for Surrey resident Crystal Litonjua, who says she's tired of her neighbours illegally renting out their suites. "We don't know if they're a new tenant or if they're a visitor...people smoking drugs...people throwing trash." Litonjua says because of all the tenants, parking has become problematic. "We have no place to park for guests, if we ever want to go out in the evening with our extra vehicle, it's a nightmare." In 2010 Surrey Council changed it's bylaws to permit one secondary suite in each single-family home, under certain conditions. These conditions include: A limit of one secondary suite per property. No secondary suites on properties with a coach house. No secondary suites in semi-detached or duplex buildings. A requirement to provide one additional off-street parking space. Secondary suites are also legal in several other Metro Vancouver municipalities, including Vancouver and West Vancouver.

Vancouver's Olympic Cauldron, the subject of growing criticism as the Sochi Winter Games unfolded and it remained unlit, was finally fired up. Olympic soccer star Christine Sinclair says the lighting of the Olympic torch brought back memories of the excitement in Vancouver four years ago. A small crowd of a about 200 people gave a round of applause as the flames appeared and broke into an impromptu rendition of O Canada. Olympic soccer star Christine Sinclair says the lighting of the cauldron brings back memories. "Being from the Lower Mainland just makes me extremely proud, to think of what the city was able to accomplish four years ago, and you know, I was one of the fortunate ones in B.C. Place during the opening ceremonies, and it brings back so many special memories" Former Vancouver Organizing Committee persident John Furlong says the cauldron is being lit at exactly the right time. "The Olympic games started on the 12th of February exactly at the time we lit this now, so I always thought this would be the night and obviously it could have been on the first night, but I expected it tonight, because this is our anniversary" B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone, who first announced the cauldron would be lit Wednesday, said the government was planning on lighting it at the end of the Sochi Games, but given the public's reaction, decided to do it sooner. He estimated it could cost $200,000 to light it, and said they are looking for corporate sponsorship or some other way to cover the cost. Questions were raised about why Vancouver had not lit its Olympic Cauldron

during the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, after 1988 Winter Olympic host Calgary started lighting theirs. Vancouver's four-armed glass and steel cauldron was built to reflect the 2010 Games' theme of fire on ice and was first lit by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky during the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was last lit for the opening of the new 500-seat Cactus Club restaurant, which paid more than $5,000 to cover the costs associated with the lighting in March of 2013. The cauldron has also been lit for Canada Day celebrations. The cauldron is managed by the Vancouver Convention Centre, which is run by the B.C. Pavilion Corporation, the Crown corporation also responsible for running BC Place. "The minimum charge is $5,000 for up to four hours, calculated from the time the cauldron is lit until it is extinguished. An administrative fee of five per cent is also applied. This fee covers all cauldron-related expenses," said a spokesperson at the time it was lit for the restaurant opening. The cauldron was built by Terasen Gas, now called FortisBC, in partnership with the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic organizing committees. A chain link fence designed to keep visitors away generated widespread outrage during the games, prompting the Olympic organizing committee to redesign the security measures. During the Sochi Games, Calgary is lighting their flame each night Canada wins a gold medal. The Olympic flames have also been lit in Montreal, Salt Lake City and Torino during the Sochi Games. Port Metro Vancouver has been sounding its heritage horns, located on top of Canada Place, at 4 p.m. PT for each gold medal won.

This actually happened to a HuffPost editor who would like to remain anonymous. If your boss is bringing you in to talk about your poor performance, she is probably not inclined to start paying you more money! In fact, if you are waiting for a performance review to ask for a raise, you are probably too late. Getting a raise is a six-month plan, not a sixminute conversation. Not Asking For A Raise...At All

All jokes aside, not asking for a raise at all can have a significant negative economic impact on your life in the long term. You can't get a raise if you don't ask for it. So speak up! Just don't speak up with any of the things you just read about.

How to Handle Children Who Fail Classes

Coloring

Many parents instill in their children the importance of making good grades and bringing home an excellent report card. When these children bring home a less than perfect report card they are shunned and get their privileges taken away from them as a form of punishment. Parents who take concern in their children's failing grades should applaud themselves for being involved, but punishment for bad grades may not be the best way to react to children that bring home poor report records. Parents that are fixated on their children receiving decent grades often react blindly to poor report cards. These parents automatically think that their kid has goofed off in school, while this may be true for some students it is the complete opposite for others. A good percentage of students that receive poor grades do so because they have difficulty learning the subject and parents take little to no initiative in helping their children with the subject. Many parents rely solely on the teacher to teach the child everything he needs to know about the subject. When the children get home they have no one to help them with their homework and no one to talk to about the homework. Teens also have to deal with feeling inferior to their peers who may fair much better in the subject which greatly affects their self esteem. These students might also rebel in school and out of school. They also gain negative feelings about school because they do not have the material or resources at home to help them. Some children intentionally goof off in school and they are the ones that should be stripped of their privileges. The children that just cannot seem to get it should not be punished but instead they should be confronted. Parents should avoid getting overly upset when their children bring home poor grades. They should instead sit

down with their children and talk to them to see what problems they might be having. There are many alternatives for children who struggle with school assignments. Parents and their children should sit down together to review these alternatives and come up with a comfortable solution. The following are ways parents can help their children earn better grades in the subjects that they experience the most difficulty in. 1. In- school tutoring is an option for children who struggle with their work. Many public schools offer free tutoring services to students who experience difficulty with their assignments. Children can meet with their tutor for a few hours every day after school. 2. Out of school tutoring is another option for children who struggle with their school work. Parents can hire a tutor to come into the home and work with their children. Children might feel more comfortable taking the tutoring sessions inside of their home. 3. Home schooling is an option for parents whose work schedule can accommodate it. Some children have a hard time learning in the traditional school setting. Attending school can be very difficult for young children as they have to face the social pressures of the school environment. These pressures can cause the children to become very anxious. Home schooling is ideal for these children. Parents may want to suggest home schooling if their children have a hard time doing well in school. Parents usually suffice as the teachers in the home school setting but teachers (or those with similar experience) can be hired to teach the child in the home for the parent. 4. Children who express extreme difficulty with their school assignments can be placed into special education programs in their school. Special education classes allow children to work at a slower pace and are targeted to

children with special needs and learning disabilities. Special education teachers can work individually with each student to tailor lesson plans to their individual needs. This type of education allows students to excel in a comfortable way. Parents should know that special education students are often made fun of in school by other students. Other students in the school call children in the special education classes speds." Your child might refuse to enter into these classes for fear of being called and thought of as such. 5. Some schools may offer online schooling and extra help for students that need more practice. Not every school offers online schooling so parents should talk to the headmaster and teachers to see what options are available.

6. Parents can frequent the library a few times a week with their children to take out books and DVDs that focus on the subject the child is struggling with. Lastly, children have the ability to exceed in school but many of them are often weighed down by personal problems and social pressures. These pressures make it almost impossible for them to focus in school. Children that face much adversity should receive some form of counseling so that they can alleviate their stress and become better students. Parents need to pay close attention to their children to see whether they are suffering from any pressures. One on one time is also important for children. Children need to feel loved, important, and supported. Parents should take out at least one day each week to spend with their children.

LDL Cholesterol
Does this test have other names? Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, LDL-C What is this test? This test measures the amount of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) in your blood. LDL cholesterol is often called "bad" cholesterol because it causes plaque to build up inside your arteries and leads to heart disease. Cholesterol screening is recommended for men older than 35 and women older than 45. If you have risk factors for heart disease, such as a family history of heart disease, you may need to begin regular testing of cholesterol as young as age 20. LDL cholesterol is one of a group of lipoproteins that can indicate heart disease, so this test is used to help diagnose it. Lowering LDL-C levels can help prevent heart disease. Why do I need this test? You may have this test as part of a routine exam to check for high cholesterol. You may also have this test if you already have heart disease caused by high cholesterol. The test can help your doctor find out how well your treatment is working. What other tests might I have along with this test? Your doctor may also order other blood tests to measure the levels of various fats in your blood, including: Total cholesterol Triglycerides High-density lipoprotein, or HDL What do my test results mean? Many things may affect your lab test results. These include the method each lab uses to do the test. Even if your test results are different from the normal value, you may not have a problem. To learn what the results mean for you, talk with your health care provider. Results are given in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). The normal range of LDL-C is 50 to 130 mg/dL. A level below 70 mg/dL is considered best for people who have diabetes or heart disease risk factors. In general: 100 to 129 mg/dL is near or just above optimal 130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline high 160 to 189 mg/dL is high 190 mg/dL and over is very high It's possible to have extremely low levels of LDL-C, but this is rare. This condition is usually a sign of a problem processing vitamins A, D, E, and K. If your levels of LDL-C are high, the condition is called dyslipidemia. High levels may mean that you have an imbalance in your diet, but the condition is often hereditary. Changing your lifestyle habits and taking medications to reduce LDL levels may help you reduce the risk for heart disease and manage the condition if you already have it. How is this test done? The test requires a blood sample, which is drawn through a needle from a vein in your arm. Does this test pose any risks? Taking a blood sample with a needle carries risks that include bleeding, infection, bruising, or feeling dizzy. When the needle pricks your arm, you may feel a slight stinging sensation or pain. Afterward, the site may be slightly sore. What might affect my test results? Smoking cigarettes can increase LDL-C levels. Stress, certain minor ailments, and some drugs can also affect your results. How do I get ready for this test? You may need to not eat or drink anything but water for a certain time before having the test. In addition, be sure your doctor knows about all medicines, herbs, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. This includes medicines that don't need a prescription and any illicit drugs you may use.

Low-Fat Yoghurt May Reduce Diabetes Risk

Eating low-fat yoghurt can reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes by almost a third, a new study has shown. The Cambridge University study, published in the journal Diabetologia, analysed seven-day food diaries kept by 4000 British men and women aged 45 to 74 years, including 753 who developed type-2 diabetes over the following 11 years. Researchers divided participants into low, medium and high consumers of dairy and also analysed the type of dairy products they were consuming. They found that people who consumed the highest amount of low-fat yoghurt had a 28 per cent reduced risk of developing diabetes compared to people who did not consume low-fat yoghurt. The group consumed an average of 4.5 125 gram pots of low-fat yoghurt a week. The researchers classified products containing less than 3.9 per cent fat as low fat. High consumption of other low-fat fermented diary products including cottage cheese and fromage frais was also associated with a reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes. The researchers did not find any association between total or high-fat dairy consumption, or consumption of any kind of milk, and the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Austin Hospital endocrinologist Richard O'Brien said the study did not prove that eating low-fat fermented dairy products caused the reduced diabetes risk, although there was a potential scientific basis for the link. He said it was possible that chemicals called menaquinones made by the fermentation process could protect against diabetes, and that probiotic bacteria contained in yoghurt could promote a healthy environment in the gut. Associate Professor O'Brien said it was important to note that the yoghurt eaters in the study tended to be slimmer, more physically active and smoke and drink less, so were a more healthy group than average overall. "The investigators used sophisticated computer modelling to try and control for all of those other factors but this is always difficult," he said. "Nevertheless, I believe these results are really important as they build on what we know from previous studies. I already eat yoghurt regularly and I'll certainly be recommending it to my patients from now on." La Trobe University dietician Audrey Tierney said that the key message was "to look at the net effect of whole foods, dietary patterns and healthy lifestyle factors and not only isolated foods, nutrients or behaviours". Dr Tierney said people eating lowfat yoghurt should make sure the fat had not been replaced with high amounts of sugar. She said Australian dietary guidelines recommended foods containing less than 10g of sugar per 100g. About 1 million Australians have been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, a chronic condition in which the pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of insulin, which is needed to convert glucose into energy. Lifestyle factors including high blood pressure, being overweight and having a poor diet increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

Signs Of Heart Attack You Must Know

Add 5 Foods To Your Daily Diet To Stay Healthier This Year

A dietitian from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has suggested adding five foods to your grocery cart to make 2013 healthier Bulgur, Chickpeas, Kale, Spaghetti squash and Sunflower seeds. According to Lindsey Lee, RD, clinical dietitian with EatRight by UAB Weight Management Services, there are numerous often-ignored foods that fit the bill for healthier eating. There are many foods that, while unfamiliar to some, are readily accessible in most grocery stores and can really expand a persons daily diet without expanding their waistlines, Lee explained. 1. Bulgur This whole-wheat product is a good substitution for rice or potatoes that has a mild, nutty flavor and chewy texture. It is packed with eight grams of fiber and six grams of protein per cup, and it clocks in at only about 150 calories. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals; particularly B vitamins and manganese. It can typically be found in the same aisle as rice and beans. The fiber and protein in whole-wheat products like bulgur help keep us feeling full throughout the day. Bulgur has a fairly low glycemic index, so it does not dramatically raise blood sugar like refined flour products like white potatoes or white rice, Lee said. 2. Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) Chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans, are healthy, versatile and inexpensive legumes that are very easy to prepare. They can even be consumed right out of the can. One cup of chickpeas has 13 grams of fiber, 15 grams of protein and three grams of healthy fat. They also have antioxidant properties and are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They can be found in the canned foods section or with the dried beans. Lee suggested eating legumes like these three to four times per week. Most of the fiber in chickpeas is insoluble fiber, which is great for digestive health. Individuals who eat them typically have better blood sugar regulation since chickpeas are so high in fiber and protein, Lee explained. 3. Kale Kale is a leafy green vegetable that is loaded with antioxidant vitamins A, C and K, and it is a good source of essential minerals like copper, potassium, iron, manganese and phosphorus. A cup of this vegetable, which can be found in the produce department, is only about 40 calories. The vitamins in kale are associated with anti-cancer health benefits, and the fiber in kale helps bind cholesterol in the body, which improves heart health. Individuals should include cruciferous vegetables like kale in their diet at least four to five times per week, Lee said. 4. Spaghetti squash Spaghetti squash is the lowcarbohydrate alternative to spaghetti pasta; the inner flesh of this squash pulls into strands, resembling the popular pasta. A one-cup serving of spaghetti squash has 10 grams of carbohydrates as compared to about 45 grams in one cup of pasta or rice. One cup has only 42 calories and offers important health benefits. Like all vegetables, spaghetti squash provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, B-vitamins and manganese. And its very versatile; you can bake or steam your spaghetti squash before adding it to recipes, or eat it as a side dish with your favorite lean meat, Lee said. 5. Sunflower seeds Sunflower seeds are generally less expensive than other nuts, and they offer many of the same health benefits as popular choices like almonds and walnuts. A quarter cup of sunflower seeds has three grams of fiber and six grams of protein. Unsalted sunflower seeds contain healthy fats, but they are high in calories at about 280 per quarter cup. Lee recommends keeping to one portion. Sunflower seeds are a good source of copper, vitamin E, selenium and manganese. Shelled, unsalted sunflower seeds can be found in the nut section, and they can be added to salads or yogurt, or eaten plain. Continued From Last Week If you disagree with the amount of duty and taxes that you have to pay, please ask to speak with the CBSA superintendent on duty. A consultation can often resolve the issue quickly and without cost. If you are still not satisfied, our officers can tell you how to make a formal appeal. Border services officers may arrest an individual for an offence under the Criminal Code (e.g., impaired driving, outstanding arrest warrants, stolen property, abductions/kidnappings) and for infractions under other acts of Parliament (e.g. the Customs Act, the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act). If you are arrested, you may be compelled to attend court in Canada. You should note that anyone arrested in Canada is protected by, and will be treated in accordance with, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Customs Want to bring goods with you when you cross the Canadian border? Avoid problems by ensuring you know what you can and cannot bring into the country.

Entering Canada

Be suredeclare everything Making your declaration If you are returning to Canada by commercial aircraft, you will receive a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Declaration Card to complete before you land. These cards are also used at some locations for travellers arriving by train, boat or bus. If you have any questions about the card or Canadian regulations, please ask the border services officer when you arrive. If you arrive in Canada in a private vehicle, such as an automobile, an aircraft, a boat or a bus, you can usually make an oral declaration. If you are declaring goods claimed as part of your CAN$800 exemption that arrived in Canada before you or will arrive after your return to Canada, ask the border services officer for a Form E24, Personal Exemption CBSA Declaration. You will need your copy of this form to claim these goods. Otherwise, you may have to pay the regular duty and taxes on them. The form will only be completed by a border services officer at the CBSA

port of entry. This form is not available online. False declarations and the seizure of goods If you do not declare, or falsely declare, goods, the CBSA can seize them. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or that you may have to pay a penalty to get them back. Depending on the type of goods and the circumstances involved, the CBSA may impose a penalty that ranges from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized goods. The Customs Act provides border services officers with the authority to seize vehicles that were used to import goods unlawfully. When this happens, the CBSA imposes a penalty that you must pay before the vehicle is returned to you. If you do not declare tobacco products and alcoholic beverages at the time they were imported, the CBSA will seize them permanently. The CBSA keeps a record of infractions. If you have an infraction record, you may have to undergo a more detailed examination on future trips. You may

also become ineligible for the NEXUS and CANPASS programs. If your goods were seized and you wish to dispute the action, you can appeal by writing a letter to the CBSA within 90 days of the date of the seizure. You can find more information about the appeal process on your seizure receipt form. Public health If you are suffering from a communicable disease upon your return to Canada, or if you have been in close contact with someone with a communicable disease while out of the country, you are obligated to inform a border services officer or a quarantine officer who can determine if you require further assessment. If you have been ill while travelling or become ill after your return to Canada, inform a Canadian doctor that you have been abroad, where you were and what, if any, treatment or medical care you have received (e.g., medications, blood transfusions, injections, dental care or surgery).

What Is Pankaj Dheers New Film Arjun Kapoor: Priyanka Chopra All About Is Not Intimidating!
Sexy Priyanka Chopra did not have any starry airs while shooting for Gunday with younger actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. Arjun is gearing up for their much awaited films release on the Valentines day has some really sweet things to say about his heroines. Arjun said,Rather than being intimidating, she is inspiring as her body of work speaks for itself. In other films, actors might be intimidated by her but looking at the kind of work she has done, you would become her fan. She gives one respect and she never makes you feel like you have done one-two-four number of films. If you combine mine and Ranveers quota of work with Alis, that is her yearly quota of work. She does not let that come in her way

and thats the nicest part about her. Gunday is a story about two mafia men Bala and Bikram played by Arjun and Ranveer with Priyanka playing the role of a glamorous cabaret dancer. Arjun prepared for the running sequences in the film by practicing on the treadmill. I had to learn how to run properly, without looking like I am running out of breath. I wanted to look nice running. Its an art, looking good when the camera is shooting at a thousand frames per second. I used to practice on the treadmill while listening to Deva Shree Ganesha. Produced by Yash Raj Films, Gunday will also be released simultaneously in Bengali with full Bengali songs composed by Bappi Lahiri.

'Jai Ho' Daisy Shah Charged With 'Attempted Murder'

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has quashed all rumours regarding any bad blood between her mentor Salman Khan and herself. Sonakshi, who was launched by Salman Khan in his brother Arbaaz Khan's film 'Dabangg', was reported to have had a tiff with the Khan brothers. The reports about a tiff with Salman and Arbaaz Khan became prominent when it was reported that Sonakshi

It Is All Game Between Salman And Sonakshi

Sinha had rejected two of Salman Khan's upcoming films 'Dolly ki Doli' and 'Kick, which eventually went to Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez respectively. However, Sonakshi Sinha's presence at his Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and Salman Khan's birthday bash were more than enough to say that she shares a cordial relation with her family.

Satyendra Singh is a Bhojpuri actor and producer. He was once an aide of Abu Salem. In a shocking incident, Satyendra has blamed Daisy Shah, who raised to fame post her role opposite Salman Khan in Jai Ho, for an attempt to murder. Satyendra Singh has filed an FIR in a police station in Utter Pradesh. In his statement, Satyendra has alleged Daisy Shah and 20 other people for plotting a scheme to murder him through a car accident. The other 20 people include choreographer Ganesh Acharya, director V K Singh and Actor Rajneish Duggal among others. According to the information received from police, a few days back Satyendra met with a bad accident. It was when he was traveling in a car and the car met with an accident. Satyendra was badly hurt. The accident was declared as a mere accident. But now after few months, Satyendra alleges that it was a well plotted scheme to murder him. He has mentioned the names of all 21 people and has blamed them for an attempt to murder him. The 21 people Satyendra has mentioned are part of a movie crew called Soda. The case was filed in Mainpuri district

of Utter Pradesh. Satyendra is also the president of now dissolved political party, Rashtrawadi Samajwadi Party. According to Satyendra he was removed from the movie Soda. He says, I was working on a film called 'Soda', where Daisy was playing the lead with me and Ganesh was choreographing the song. I had written the script for it. However, within two days of the films shoot at Kamalistan studio, the crew tried to throw me out of the project. I was told that Daisy wanted to work with a known star and wanted me out. About the accident Satyendra says, I met with an accident in December. Initially, I thought it was a minor accident but later on, I realized that the person in the car was trying to overtake me and push me from the bridge. When Ganesh Acharya was asked about it, he said, I am not aware of such a person or a complaint. Daisy said that she has nothing to do with the movie Soda as she has just shot a song for the movie. She said, I shot this song around 16 months ago and I have moved on since then. I have nothing to do with the films cast and crew now.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has sought further extension of his parole to nurse his wife Maanyata, who is recovering after surgery, police said. Dutt, currently out on parole since Dec 21, 2013, was due to return to jail Jan 21, but he sought and was given extension of another month (till Feb 21) in his parole. Now, he has applied for another monthlong extension.

Sanjay Dutt Seeks Further Parole To Nurse Wife

Dutt has written to the Pune divisional commissioner, who has directed the Khar Police in Mumbai to verify the reasons for parole extension cited in the application, a police official said. The verification report is expected in the next few days. An accused in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Dutt is serving the remaining 42 months of his five year prison sentence.

A few months ago, Maanyata was diagnosed as suffering from multiple heart and liver ailments.

She was admitted to Global Hospital, Parel last month and underwent surgery.

C hunky George Clooney serves duty as a triple threat in this 118 minute eye-opener which looks at the heroic efforts of a team of American intellectuals plus a British and French friend determined to head off the Nazis at the pass. Only here the holy grail are European masterful works of art coveted by no less than Adolf Hitler. Determined to steal art belonging to innocent citizens of captured cities the American led team find themselves in a race against time as the Nazi war machine cross-crossed Europe.. Solid as a rock is Clooney as team leader Frank Stokes. No need to stoke Stoke's passion as he brings together a diverse group of art aficionados who all bring something different to the table. Lots of subtleties surface in this murky trip down memory lane that sheds light on this sad moment in history. Along on the quest are fan favourites John Goodman, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban and Matt Damon who leaves his Bourne heroics by the wayside. Just a touch long The Monuments Men does a good job re-creating the era and smartly reveals how a potential tragedy turns into a triumph.

Justin Bieber's Statue To Be Kim To Walk Down The Aisle In Removed From Madame Tussauds May
Pop star Justin Bieber's wax statue will be removed from the Madame Tussauds museum as the bosses feel that the showcase "no longer does justice" to the singer or the attraction. Bret Pidgeon, general manager Madame Tussauds, said, "This is disappointing, but hopefully we can welcome a new 'grown-up' Justin back to the attraction in the near future." The 19-year-old's display at the wax museum has been groped, fondled and grabbed by fans and as a result the

exhibit organisers had to withdraw his dummy from display, reports a website. "With no ropes or barriers to stop them, thousands of fans have had their photographs taken with him since then - but it has taken its toll," said a source. Madame Tussauds New York states that the figure has been damaged over the years and, despite regular maintenance, "it no longer does justice either to the star or to the attraction", and so the museum has reluctantly decided to remove it.

Socialite Kim Kardashian and her rapper-fiance Kanye West will reportedly get married in Paris in May. The two, who have an eight-month-old daughter, North West, preponed the date to May instead of July because they are "so excited" to get married. The 33-year-old reality TV star and the 36-year-old rapper also want their daughter to be heavily involved in the ceremony. "North will have a large role in the

wedding!" usmagazine.com quoted a source as saying. Another friend said that the couple's wedding plans are well underway and they will have "lots of events leading up to the big day" for their guests. However, Kim, who was married twice before, is said to have been very reluctant to have a lavish ceremony. "Kim isn't totally pumped about a huge wedding. But she's going along with it," another source said.

New research says those who do so, lead happier lives than those who don't
A recent study believes that daughtersin-law led better, balanced (and thereby, happier) lives and dealt with fewer disappointments and lesser resentment when they maintained a strong relationship with their mothersin-law. The inference is that when there exists only one mother figure in the family, there may be conflicts with the non-connected partner. Here's how you can bond with the saas... Striking the right chord Most of the time, she may not be sweet to you, bake cookies for you or even support the decisions you make. Even so, go that extra mile to strike the right balance with her to avoid difficulties at all times. Work through your own feelings Ever thought of putting yourself in her shoes, if only to check where her 'meddling' or 'judgmental' behaviour stems from? Do that and keep in mind: Your ma-in-law is one of the most important people in your husband's life. Be sure it isn't jealousy that is driving a wedge between you two. Break the ice She may be difficult to handle. But remember, your ma-in-law is different from you. Try and talk to her as much as possible. This leads to a comfort level and stronger understanding, sooner rather than later. Stay polite This is probably the hardest thing to do if she's constantly rattling you. Make sure you don't criticise your mother-inlaw in front of your spouse. This may make matters worse for you. Resort to humour Sometimes, deflecting criticism with humour can soften her barbs and also put everyone at ease. She's constantly complaining about you? Get humour to bail you out. Praise her often Definitely don't go out of your way for this one. You may come across as a faker if you do. Simply acknowledge the things she does for you and the family. Sound and be genuine when you do praise her. Housewife Minoti Ganguly, 36, shares, "At dinner, I make it a point to sit down with the whole family and praise my mother-in-law to not only win her heart but also, to make everyone understand how much she's still doing for us. This way, we've managed to strike the right bond." Clarify misunderstandings Don't allow your relationship with the mother-in-law to be directed by her assumptions of you and your needs. If the two of you have had misgivings about something, sit down an clear it out. 3 ways to deal with a difficult mumin-law Avoid escalating conflict Not on the same page with her? Back off; end the conversation and a potential argument. Get spousal support In the very least, let him know there's trouble brewing. That way, if there is an argument, he'll side with you. Communicate with her Most women shy away, thinking it could worsen matters. Fact of the matter is, not talking to her directly, does that.

Sleep Well For Sparkling Eyes

There will be late nights aplenty over the coming days. If you want your eyes to look bright and sparkling, follow some easy tips, like having a good night's sleep, to help you. A new study of 2,000 British people, commissioned by Murine eye drops, reveals that nearly two-thirds of people say that their eyes make them feel bad when they are tired. Even then, only one quarter have used eye drops in the past 12 months to soothe them. Optometrist and spokesperson for Murine eye drops, Lara Hefson, gives out her top five tips for surviving the party season with sparkling eyes: - Cut down on salty food and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. Keeping your body hydrated is vital. - Essential oils are a vital part of your diet, and are crucial for tear production. Make sure you have enough eggs and oily fish in your diet, or consider taking a flaxseed oil supplement. - Placing a hot compress over closed eyes daily helps stimulate tear production and reduces the symptoms of dry eye. - Sleep well! Tired eyes will look red and puffy and can feel really quite uncomfortable too. - Using eye drops will provide instant hydration, and also whiten and brighten dull winter eyes.

Blame Tortorella For Losing Spiral, As Canucks Collapse Again In Loss To Leafs
'We just have not done a good enough job because our guys are just not consistent enough,' says coach this break and get ready to play again. Vancouver led 1-0 going into the third period and were playing a superb road game until suddenly getting over-run, unable to make plays to protect their lead or relieve Toronto pressure. Former Canuck Mason Raymond tied it 1-1 at 7:23 when he skated out from behind the net, saw goalie Roberto Luongo on his knees and fired high, short-side to burst Vancouver's defensive dam. Phil Kessel gave the Maple Leafs the lead at 10:03 when his savvy wristshot through traffic beat Luongo from 45 feet, and James van Riemsdyk made it 3-1 at 12:05 when he chopped at the puck and sent it caroming in off Canuck defenceman Alex Edler. You can't be in that situation, Tortorella said. We can't let the momentum change in that third period the way it did. That's details. I need to take full responsibility for that. Obviously, we have not taught well enough because we continue to make the same mistakes at crucial times of games. You guys may not see the little things that happen before goals, but we (coaches) do. That situational play has just not been consistent enough. Tortorella said he added to the current crisis by getting suspended six games for charging towards the Calgary Flames' locker room between periods on Jan. 18. The Canucks are 2-8 since then. There's not much else to say, Luongo said. It's disappointing to head into the break like that. We really need to regroup over the next couple of weeks and come back with a fresh mindset and get back at it. Whether guys are going to Olympic or on vacation. . . we have to make sure when we get back, we really put the hammer down here. We want to win some games and get back in this thing. Luongo and Canuck defenceman Dan Hamhuis will join Team Canada in Russia. Other Canucks leaving here Sunday for the Sochi Olympics are Swedes Daniel Sedin and Alex Edler, American Ryan Kesler and Raphael Diaz of Switzerland. It's not what we wanted to do, Kesler said of heading to the Olympics on a losing streak. We've got to use this break to refocus and re-energize and come back stronger. Asked why the Canucks have been so dismal in the third period recently, Kesler said: No idea. Fatigue? I don't know. Sedin said: You're almost more afraid of losing than trying to win a game. The Maple Leafs had lost 11 straight games to the Canucks since 2003, but Before today, the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Vancouver Canucks was 2003. It seems about that long since the Canucks won a game. Another Olympian collapse by Vancouver in the third period sent the Canucks spiralling into the National Hockey League's Olympic break on a seven-game losing streak after the Leafs scored three times in less than five minutes late in the game to win 3-1. The loss, in a game the Canucks led 1-0 and managed beautifully for two periods, ended one of the most discouraging road trips in franchise history. Vancouver lost all five games in regulation time and, after potentially memorable matchups this week against Original Six teams in Detroit, Boston, Montreal and Toronto, stagger into the Olympic break on its worst outright losing streak in 15 years. There is fault for everyone, although John Tortorella tried to claim much of it. It's pretty obvious that the coaching staff here has not done a good enough job teaching details of situational play, the Canucks' head coach said. Third period, wall play, underneath the puck we just have not done a good enough job (as coaches) because our guys are just not consistent enough. That's going to be a huge focus as we go through there is no game Vancouver can't lose these days. The Canucks have lost six times this season four in regulation when they carried leads into final frame. The losing streak has been characterized by the Canucks' lack of energy and execution in the third period. The last Canuck forward to score a third-period goal was Mike Santorelli on Jan. 10. And Santorelli hasn't played since being injured a week later. Against the Leafs, the Canucks went ahead 1-0 near the end of the first period and looked as sturdy and capable in the second period as they have for weeks. Kesler scored the Canuck goal at 19:38 of the first period. His tumbling shot may have clipped a Maple Leaf before fooling goalie Jonathan Bernier. A favorable bounce has been nearly as rare lately for the Canucks as sustained pressure. Also for a change, Vancouver actually managed their lead at least for a while playing a safe and simple second period. Luongo had few difficult saves to make. But in the third period, he couldn't make enough saves, and the Canucks couldn't do enough to help him. They've got a lot to think about during the Olympic break, and lots of time to think. The Canucks' next game is Feb. 26 against the St. Louis Blues.

Nadroga Football Association have appointed former national captain Kini Tubi to be their new coach after Joseph Nand was told to step down. The association fired Nand just 17 games into his tenure as the teams head coach including four games so far in the Fiji Sun/Skipper Tuna National Football League this season. According to Nand, he was given the option on Sunday midnight by their president, Vijay Singh. On Sunday at 11.30pm I was called by president (Vijay Singh) and he told me that should I step down if not I would be fired, Nand said. I replied that I wont resign just like that just because we lost to Ba 6-0. What can you expect when players are not turning up for training and one player is leaving. I thank them for giving me that opportunity to coach the team once again, he said. This was a difficult decision for the NFA to make, but we needed to make a change, Singh said. I did not fire him but told him to step down, Joseph Nand is a qualified coach and we appreciate his hard work, but

the people of Nadroga need results and I am answerable to them, therefore this action has to be taken, Singh said. This is the same thing we did to Waisea Tale (Snr). He was given four games to prove his worth but there was no improvement so he was asked to leave. Singh said despite Nands fate, he would be given a new portfolio to look after the matters of the sports administrator for a four-year term. We have created this portfolio for him to take up and look after the administration aspect of the association from the youth upwards. He will be in charge of the schools etc. That was quick Joseph Nand lasted just four games into this season with the Stallions placed in the bottom half of the table. Despite only three points, they were better compared to winless Lautoka and Navua who are struggling with no win. They are all battling to avoid being the first team to face relegation in the inaugural top eight format after this season.

Coach Removed
Since Nands establishment last year, he helped pull Nadroga from a lucky escape bid over bottom rocked Tavua and Savusavu. Both of which are in the premier division this season. Nand came in on their last three appearances last season. I was called to relieve interim coach Ramesh Sharma last Friday. I was the guest coach that day, we lost Suva (2-0). I was fully appointed before the Labasa match (1-0 loss), and we beat Savusavu (50) and drew (0-0) with Navua, Nand said. A few weeks later in the 2013 Inkk Battle of the Giants we lost to Ba (21), drew with Nadi (0-0) and booted Suva (2-0 win) out of the tournament. We lost in the semifinal to Lautoka on penalty kicks (5-4). Nadroga made a semifinal appearance after long time since 2002 BOG win in Labasa. They finished in overall third finish beating Labasa 1-0 in the 3 rd/ 4 th play offs. During the Courts IDC they lost to Suva (2-1), drew with Nadi (1-1), and drew with Navua (1-1), and the Fiji Sun/Skipper Tuna NFL beat Lautoka (2-1) at home after a long time, lost to Labasa (3-0), and lost to Nadi (2-0) and lost to Ba (6-0) over the weekend. I am really frustrated to be dealing with this kind of treatment. My message to other coaches is to be authoritative and be humble at the same time, he said. If I was given a lot of resources and fired, then I would accept it but if you are not given anything then that is not justifiable. Nand is a former Labasa (1994) and Suva rep (1997-98). He has been a coach since 1993. He did also face the same music as the coach of Nadroga in 2005 and after nine years was dealt the same.
