Pedal power pays off for police

HESWALL Neighbourhood Policing Team successfully completed a 50-mile sponsored
bike-ride in aid of Claire House Children’s Hospice.
Claire House is a part of Heswall Neighbourhood and officers visit regularly to show
their support to the staff and children. The hospice needs to raise £200,000 every
month to keep its doors open and the officers’ aim was to raise at least £2,500.
The sponsored ride received support from local businesses Castle Motors, Wirral
Wheelz, K-cycles, Iceland, and the Ravenscroft Public House.
Fourteen people did the ride and police were accompanied by the local sports
development officer. All the officers completed the route, despite the fact that some
were on borrowed bikes because they didn’t own one.
The weather was fine and the
riders and back-up team visited all
Wirral police stations, clocking up an
impressive 53-miles. Neighbourhood
staff collected donations at all
stations raising nearly £500 from
on-duty colleagues. This made a

Curtain comes down on film society

HESWALL Film Society is being wound up due to a lack of committee members.
In recent years the society has experienced a declining membership which puts its
future at risk.
The society has been showing films in Heswall for 40 years but recently faced an
uncertain future due to a shortage of members and officers.
Secretary of Heswall Film Society, Vanessa Matthews, said: “If anyone is interested
in film and would be willing to help out within the society, which holds nine events per
year, they should contact Jean Jones on 677 4590 or visit the Heswall Film Society
website on www.heswallfilmsoc.org.uk.

Helping your pet cope with Bonfire Night

While we as humans may enjoy celebrating 5th November with fireworks, for many pets this can
be an extremely stressful time. Dogs and cats have extremely good hearing and can be startled or
afraid of noises that are loud or unfamiliar. There are a number of things that you can do to help your
pet during this period so that they feel more secure and to help keep them safe.
Protecting Cats and Dogs from Noise and Accidents
Never let your pet outside while fireworks are being let off, even if you think they won’t be fright-
ened as they can be very unpredictable around loud noises which could result in an accident and/
or injury. Make sure that you have exercised your dog earlier in the day before the fireworks start so
that they are more likely to settle in the evening. Keep all windows closed and curtains drawn and
block off your cat or dog flaps so that they can’t escape. It is advisable to have your pet micro-
chipped so if they do get out, they can be easily traced and reconciled with you quickly. We are
doing a special offer of just £15 throughout October for microchipping – see our advert for more
details.
Having background noise which they are familiar with can be helpful to distract them, eg TV or
radio and this will block out some of the noise of the fireworks. Try to avoid leaving your pet alone as
this can make them more stressed. There is also a product known as D.A.P (Dog Appeasing Pherom-
one) which can be given to your pet in the lead up to Bonfire night. This simulates a scent signal that
bitches produce to help their puppies settle and feel safe. D.A.P has been proven to help reduce
firework fear in dogs and it comes in a variety of formats but the most effective product comes as a
plug-in which you use in your home and is suitable for dogs of any age. It is advisable to start using
this for a few weeks before the fireworks start so that it has time to take effect and your pet will get
most benefit from it. Ask our staff for further details on this.
Protecting Smaller Domestic Animals
Pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds all need to be treated with special care when
fireworks are being let off as these animals are easily frightened.
Make sure that you bring outdoor hutches and cages inside for the night or into a shed/garage
where they can be kept as quiet as possible. You can cover hutches & cages with a blanket to
lessen the noise and keep the animal calmer but make sure that they have sufficient air circulation.
You can also give your pet extra bedding to burrow in which will help to make it feel more secure.
If your pet does have to stay outside, try to face its hutch/cage towards a wall and again cover it
with a blanket. Make sure that you do not let off fireworks anywhere near its cage and check regu-
larly to make sure that it is not becoming stressed.

BooK REVIEWS: WHAT’S NEW

BY ELEANOR DAVIES, MANAGER OF
LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Paperback Fiction: Me Cheeta by James Lever

Longlisted for this year’s Booker Prize as ‘the wildcard’,
this is the fictional autobiography of a chimpanzee.
Sounds whacky? It is. A fantastic spoof on Hollywood
memoirs, this is the life story of Tarzan’s chimp, his
liberation from the Liberian Jungle and rise to stardom
Cheeta’s bitchy asides about his fellow actors and his
battle with drink and drugs make for hilarious reading.
Anyone who remembers the golden days of Hollywood
with affection will find this a wonderfully funny and-
surprisingly- at times quite moving book.

Autobiography: ‘My Better Half and Me’

by Joss and Rosemary Ackland
Actor Joss Ackland and his late wife Rosemary were
exceptionally lucky to have found each other, and their
incredibly close bond saw them through the ups and downs of
marriage for over fifty years. This is an account of their lifelong
love affair from both their points of view. Rosemary kept a
diary from the age of fifteen and continued it for her whole life
even after the onset of motor neurone disease which left her
mute and immobile. Interspersed with her entries is Joss’s
commentary charting all the major events of their lives including
the rise of his brilliant career and the tragic death of their oldest son. A true old
fashioned romance.

The pub’s owners want to extend the licence to allow alcohol to be served in the

the nearby worship hall.

Wirral Primary Care Trust and West Wirral Group Practice finally got their scheme

exceeded our expectations, this year we had just over 60 walkers who raised an
amazing pledged amount of £3,500!’
For more info contact Colette on 801 1405 or colette.byrne@mariecurie.org.uk
