L1.Introduction L1.0.Thisappendixprovidesguidanceforcreatingcatalogrecordsforgraphicmaterials thatformidentifiableunits(componentparts)withinalargerwork(thehostitem), particularlyforillustrationswithinbooksandserials.Dependingonlocalpolicy,such analyticaccesscanbeprovidedbydescribingtheillustrationthroughanaddedentryin therecordforthelargerwork(ananalyticaladdedentry,seeL2),orthroughaseparate catalogrecordfortheillustration(anInanalytic,seeL3). L1.1.Severalrationalescanbecitedtojustifyprovidinganalyticaccess:

Itprovidesresearcherswithaccessto,andmorethoroughdescriptionsof, embeddedgraphicmaterialforwhichlittleornoinformationisrecordedin thebibliographicrecorddescribingthelargerwork. Itenhancesthesecurityofgraphicmaterialsthatmightbeeasilyseparated fromthelargerwork. Itcandrawattentiontounexpectedcontent

L1.2.Thisappendixshouldnotbeusedwhencreatingrecordsforgraphicmaterialsthat havebecomephysicallyseparatedfromtheiroriginalhostitem.Instead,provideaccess totheoriginalhostitemthroughnotesandaddedentries,andtothenewhostitem(if any,e.g.inthecaseofaniteminanextraillustratedvolume)throughlocalnotesand addedentries(see7B8.2andAppendixF). L1.3.MARC21codingisusedastheinputstandardfortheexamplesinthisappendix. CatalogersrequiringadditionalguidancearereferredtoMARC21Formatfor BibliographicData. L1.4.Thechiefsourceofinformationistextprovidedbythecreatororcreatingbodyon thefrontorbackoftheleafwiththeillustration.Transcribeinformationfoundinthe chiefsource.Whennosuitablecreatorsuppliedtextispresent,supplyinformationin squarebracketsasnecessary.
