BROADBAND

BROADBAND AND BROADBAND SERVICES

Introduction:
In toadys globally networked society through internet, there is always increasing demand for higher capacity systems and more bandwidth for new services & networking, hence new various types of access technologies for broadband have to be found for this exponential growth. Prior to broadband service, PS ! dialup "including IS#!$ was the main techni%ue to get Internet access. &or high speed, only alternative was lease line bandwidth. 'ven today, PS ! dialup service is prevalent. (S!) offers many options for dialup Internet account such as Sancharnet "pre*paid$ and !etone "+)I based$ service. Sancharnet is an all India roaming account i.e. user can use it from any landline in India. he dialup charges are payable on landline whereas, Internet usage gets deducted from Sancharnet account. he download speed depends on %uality of PS ! line and goes up to ,-.bps limited by capacity of modem used. &or Internet access, (S!) also offers /nlimited plan on postpaid +#01 and usage based for prepaid +#01 service. What is Broadband? 21I has defined (roadband as an always on data connection that is able to support interactive services including internet access and has the capability of the minimum download speed of 3,- kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence "P4P$ of the service provider intending to provide broadband service where multiple such individual broadband connection are aggregated and the subscriber is able to access these interactive services including the internet through this P4P. he interactive services will exclude any services for which separate license is specifically re%uired, for example, real time voice transmission, except to the extent that it is presently permitted under ISP license with Internet telephony. Wired Broadband echno!ogies: here are many different types of broadband access technologies. 'ach of these technologies can compete to provide similar services to consumers and businesses. 5 6#igital Subscriber )ine "#S), given over copper loop of elecom operators$ 17

Digita! Subscriber "ine #DS"$ #igital Subscriber line "#S)$ is a wire line transmission technology that brings data and information faster over copper telephone lines already installed in homes and business. raditional phone service connects your home or business to a telephone company office via copper wires. 1 #S) modem accesses the local telephone companys central office where a #S) 1ccess #S)10 then transmits the signal from the copper telephone line onto a network backbone, and eventually to the Internet. :ith high speed Internet access that uses #S) transmission technology, there is no need to ;dial in< to a traditional modem. his service allows consumers and business to have an ;always*on< dedicated connection to the Internet. he following are types of #S) transmission technologies that may be used to provide high*speed Internet access. S%&&etrica! Digita! Subscriber "ine #SDS"$ It is used typically for business applications such as video conferencing. he traffic from the user to the network is upstream traffic, and from the network to the user is downstream traffic. :hen the data rate in both directions is e%ual, it is called a symmetric service. As%&&etrica! Digita! Subscriber "ine #ADS"$ It is used primarily by residential users who receive a lot do data but do not send much such as Internet surfers. 1#S) provides faster speed in a downstream direction "from the telephone central office to the customers premises$ than upstream "from customers premise to the telephone central office$. :hen the upstream data rate is lower than the downstream rate, it is called an asymmetric service. 'igh(data(rate Digita! Subscriber "ine #'DS"$ It provides fixed symmetrical high*speed access at = rate "=., mbps$, and is designed for business purposes. Ver% high(data(rate Digita! Subscriber "ine #VDS"$ It provides both symmetrical and asymmetrical access with very high bit rate over the copper line. #eployment is very limited at this time. ISDN Digita! Subscriber "ine #IDS"$

It provides symmetrical connection with Integrated Services #igital !etwork "IS#!$, and is designed to extend #S) to locations with a long distance to a telephone central office. DS"A) #S)10 is the e%uipment located at a phone companys central office "+4$ that links many customer #S) connections over existing copper telephone lines to a single high* speed 1 0 line. :hen the phone company receives a #S) signal, an 1#S) modem with a P4 S splitter detects voice calls and data. he #S)10 intermixes voice fre%uency signals and high*speed #S) data traffic into a customers #S) line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carriers network. 9oice calls are sent to the PS !, and data are sent to the #S)10. #S)10 is connected to Internet (ackbone for access to :orld :ide :eb and other applications. 0ore #S)10 channels a phone company has, the more customers it can support.
