Shakespeare employs many descriptors outcast, bootless, deafto describe the narrators state of being. He also utilizes repetition to stress his many desires. At the turn of the sonnet, Shakespeare uses a simile to describe the mans emotions when he remembers his love.

The words Shakespeare chooses to describe the narrator show his longing and desire for the things he does not have. He curses his life and heaven, jealous. The connotations in the lines before the turn are mostly negative, and those that are positive describe things that dont belong to him. However, at the turn, the language suddenly becomes hopeful and light, symbolizing the joy his love brings to his life.

Shakespeare uses repetition to emphasize the mans wants. He also uses the structure of a sonnet to show his greater meaning, as when the turn comes there is a literal turn in the meaning of the poem. This structure emphasizes his lover over all the material desires the man has, as well as conveys to the audience the importance of this.

This poem symbolizes the idea that love is greater than any material object or trait on earthmoney, strength, popularity, beauty. The narrator, in the beginning, continually voices his desires for what he doesnt have, showing the expectations society has on a successful person. However, in the end he realizes that he wouldnt his love for any of it, conveying the message that love is greater than any power or possession. And in a time where those things were prized above all, this sonnet then proves to be a revolutionary idea.
