USUAL DOSE/ROUTE: Oral 325-640 mg (3-4 time daily) DRUG ACTION: Analgesic for mild/moderate pain as sole agent or in combination with other opiods and/or analgesics. Antipyretic. Does not possess anti inflammatory properties. USES: Mild to moderate pain or fever, arthralgia, dental pain, dysmennorhea, headache, migraine, myalgia, osteoarthiritis. POTENTIAL RISKS/SIDE EFFECTS: Uticaria, erythematous reactions, anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, pancytopenia, jaundice, GI bleeding, seizures, rash, renal failure, nausea, vomiting, ab pain. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: Excessive use causes bleeding, watch use with alcohol, antileptic. Administer with food, OD= sweating, pallor, cyanosis, oliguria, avoid aspirin and salicylates. Uses: prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemo, prevention of post op nausea and vomiting. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: assess respiratory, Constipation is a common side effect and may be prevented with adequate fluid and fiber intake. Monitor for orthostatic hypotension. Take with food. USUAL DOSE/ROUTE: 10 mg qid 2-4 days, then 25 mg for first week, then 50 mg qid individualized to desired response. DRUG ACTION: Vasodilates arteriolar smooth muscle by direct relaxation; reduction in blood pressure with reflex increases in heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output. USE: essential hypertension and severe. Unlabeled: CHF.

POTENTIAL RISKS/SIDE EFFECTS: headache, tremors, dizziness, anxiety, depression, peripheral neuritis, depression, fever, chills, shock, orthostatic hypotension, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, rash, uticaria, edema, muscle cramps, palpitations. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: Asses cardiac status and BP, weigh daily, I&Os, Edema in legs and feet, crackles and dyspnea, affects mood and mental status, IV site for extravasation, avoid OTC, rise slowly, take with food, PO route is usually preferred.
