Snow days
mean new
school days
in district
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
One of the worst winters in re-
cent years has put Medfords local
school districts in a bind.
Both the Medford Township
Public School District and the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict amended their calendars last
week to account for the number of
snow days used so far this winter.
The Lenape Regional High
School District held a special
Board of Education meeting last
week to discuss the school calen-
dar. The meeting was called to
allow the board to approve an
amended school calendar so a
snow day could be made up on
Presidents Day.
The amended calendar also
listed the dates snow days will be
made up if needed. The district
has used five snow days so far this
year. The first three are to be
made up on June 16, June 17 and
June 18. The district made up its
fourth snow day on Feb. 17 and
will make up its fifth snow day on
June 19.
If a sixth snow day is neces-
please see SNOW, page 5

For 100 years, the Womens
Club of Medfords motto of mak-
ing the community a better place
to live has rung true in the town-
ship.
Club president Kathy Cullen
said many people from the out-
side see the club as a social group.
However, the club has actually
been one of the biggest service or-
ganizations in Medford.
People are very surprised
with how much we actually do,
Cullen said.
The Womens Club of Medford
dates back to April of 1914, when
three women, Ella Allen, Flo-
rence Ullman and Lillian Ullman
were credited with forming the
club as the Athena Club. The
club would join the Federation of
Womens Clubs shortly after-
ward, and in 1919, the name was
officially changed to the Womens
Club of Medford.
As time went on, the womens
club focused heavily on service in
Medford and the surrounding
community. Some of the town-
ships largest projects were ones
taken on by the club.

sary, it will be made up on June
20. Any additional snow days will
be made up during spring break,
which is the week of April 21. The
school district will take away
from spring break last in hopes of
keeping the full week off intact.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
baum issued a letter posted on the
districts website following the
Board of Educations approval of
the amended calendar, saying
how this winter has been out of
the ordinary as far as the number
of school days affected by weath-
er.
We are aware that some fami-
lies take advantage of Presidents
Day weekend to vacation or visit
colleges and universities and
apologize for any disruption to
your plans, Birnbaum said. Al-
though we do weigh the impact of
school closings and make-up days
on families, our decisions are
based on what is best for the safe-
ty and education of our stu-
dents.
For students who were not able
to attend school on Presidents
Day due to college visitations or
other previous travel plans, ex-
cused absences were accepted as
long as the student brought prop-
er documentation to their respec-
tive school.
The Board of Education for
Medford schools also passed a
modified calendar during its
work session meeting last week.
Like the Lenape district, Medford
Township schools also added
Presidents Day as a regular
school day.
Unlike the Lenape district,
Medford has not yet added any
days to the end of the year. Super-
intendent Joseph Del Rossi said
the district is still on track to fin-
ish the school year on June 23 as
originally planned.
We had three days built into
our calendar for makeup days,
Del Rossi said.
We dont have a protocol or
procedure other than the those
three days.
The three days the district
built into the calendar were ex-
hausted earlier this winter. They
chose to make up the fourth on
Presidents Day with the modified
calendar.
Del Rossi said its been four or
five years since the school district
used all of its snow days. Beyond
the Feb. 17 makeup day, the dis-
trict doesnt have a plan for addi-
tional snow days.
Its something the board will
look at when the time comes, Del
Rossi said.

eve written openly and
often in this space about
casinos and gambling in
general, and, for the most part, we
have advocated for the support of At-
lantic Citys casinos, and expanded
gambling offerings such as online
gaming and betting on sports.
This time, not so much.
We dont often bash politicians in
this space, either. Were more of the
thumbs up kinda guys and gals
when it comes to recognizing the work
our elected officials put in. They get
enough grief for every move they
make from other sources.
This time, not so much.
State Sen. President Steve Sweeney,
like just about every politician past,
president and, most likely, future, is
concerned about Camden. He wants to
revitalize the city, along with other
struggling cities such as Trenton and
Newark. His solution, according to a
Press of Atlantic City report, is to
open casinos in Camden, which he be-
lieves might be a better location for
gambling than East Rutherford, where
gambling dens have been proposed.
He must be joking.
Outside New Jersey, Camden is infa-
mous for being the murder capital of
the U.S. Inside New Jersey, its reputa-
tion might be even worse.
Sure, casinos can bring significant
revenue to an area and, to an extent,
help revitalize it. But that just wont
work here, in our opinion.
For casinos to be successful nowa-
days, there have to be more offerings
than just gambling were talking
shows, dining, nightlife, spas and
shopping. Just look at Atlantic Citys
gambling revenue decline versus its
increase in non-gambling revenue. Its
obvious.
This cant happen in Camden.
Wealthier New Jersey residents
with disposable income the ones who
can afford to spend lavishly at the
comedy clubs, on a massage and on a
steak dinner arent likely to flock to
Camden to do the same. And out-of-
staters? Good luck with that!
The more likely scenario is that a
casino in Camden would prey on the
already poor residents of the poverty-
stricken city, promising a chance at an
easy solution but delivering nothing
but empty wallets.
Camden isnt a lost cause. Hard
work, determination and, frankly,
some luck, could turn the city around
... over time. But it will take dedication
and smart planning, not a quick fix
such as a casino.
What is Sweeney thinking?
in our opinion
Casinos in Camden?
Steve Sweeney must be out of his mind!
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on state Sen.
Steve Sweeneys idea to bring casinos to
Camden, or other cities such as Trenton
or Newark? Do you think it could work, or
would it do more harm than good? Share
your thoughts with our readers.
The following information was provided
by the Medford Township Police Depart-
ment.
On Feb. 6 at 8:15 a.m., Medford Township
police, fire and EMS personnel were dis-
patched to the intersection of Skeet Road at
Hawkin Road for a motor vehicle accident.
Police investigation revealed a 31-year-
old female from Tabernacle was operating
a Black Ford Edge and was stopped facing
westbound on Hawkin Road at the stop
sign. As she attempted to cross Skeet Road
her vehicle impacted a Mercury Grand
Marque that was operated by a 64-year-old
male from Southampton on Skeet Road.
As a result of the impact, the female re-
ported a complaint of pain in her head
area but refused any medical treatment
from Medford EMS. She was issued a
motor vehicle summons for careless driv-
ing at the conclusion of the crash investi-
gation.
On Feb. 7 at 2:20 p.m., Medford Township
Police stopped a gold Toyota Camry for ob-
structing the flow of traffic and failure to
maintain lane. After further investigation,
the driver, a 38-year-old male from River-
side, was found to be in possession of sus-
pected marijuana and CDS paraphernalia.
The passenger, a 26-year-old female from
Riverside, was found to be in possession of
an additional bag of suspected marijuana.
The suspects were placed under arrest
and transported to police headquarters to
be processed. The female was later released
on a summons complaint. The male was
turned over to Burlington City Police on an
outstanding warrant out of their jurisdic-
tion.

bringing the first lending library
to Medford, Cullen said. We
meet at the Medford Community
Center. The club was instrumen-
tal in the early days of the cen-
ter.
Today, the club works with or-
ganizations such as Mothers Mat-
ter and the Special Olympics and
sponsors a scholarship for one
Shawnee High School female
each year. The club remains ac-
tively involved in the township.
We do a lot of service projects
in the local area, Cullen said.
We partner with our organiza-
tions in the area for fundraisers
as well.
Cullen said the club is made up
of a variety of women from dif-
ferent backgrounds. While many
of the members are middle aged
or older, there has been an influx
of younger women joining the or-
ganization.
We have members from all
walks of life, she said. We have
members who are stay-at-home
moms, we have teachers, we have
business people.
Were looking really for any-
body who wants to give back to
the community, she said. Any-
body in the surrounding area
who would like to give back.
One of the clubs long-time
members, Alice Mietz has been
giving back to the community
with the club for 38 years. While
she has participated in countless
projects, there is one in particular
that really touches her in a spe-
cial way.
The project closest to my
heart was with social services
and adoptive grandmothers, she
said. We remember them with
the holidays and the birthdays,
and we visit them at the nursing
homes.
Mietz said many of the seniors
whom the club adopts are with-
out family and really appreciate
the efforts of the club.
In addition, many other proj-
ects bring a sense of unity among
its members. Mietz said the clubs
ability to work as a team acts as
encouragement.
It gives a very wide leadership
skills, she said. Id never do this
on my own. It gives you the capac-
ity to see what needs to be done.
Cullen said many of the
women who join the club tend to
stay friends and continue to par-
ticipate for a long time.
Once you are a member, the
ladies tend to stay with it for as
long as they can, Cullen said.
Mietz said the club has tons of
yearbooks detailing the clubs his-
tory. They include details on its
founding and some of its earliest
projects. The clubs history shows
how it has remained service ori-
ented, even as Medford has
changed over time.
On March 14, the club is hold-
ing its 100th anniversary celebra-
tion at the Medford Village Coun-

The state Department of Edu-
cation has been participating
with other states in the Partner-
ships for Assessment of Readi-
ness for College and Careers de-
veloping student assessments
that will replace the existing High
School Proficiency Assessment in
2014-2015. The online assessment
will test English I, II, III, and, Al-
gebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II
twice per year while the students
are taking that course. The
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict will be conducting the fol-
lowing to prepare for next year:
March 6 infrastructure test: On
the last day of this years HSPA
exam freshmen, sophomores and
juniors will have an opportunity
to log on to a practice PARCC as-
sessment similar to what will be
administered next year. This will
develop a familiarity with the
new online format as well as test
the LRHSD technology infra-
structure.
PARCC field test: All four
schools in the LRHSD have been
chosen to take part in a field test
of the new upcoming assessment.
The field test will be adminis-
tered to more than 1 million stu-
dents across the country and will
not be reported for scoring or ac-
countability. This will give the
districts students, teachers and
administrators an opportunity to
experience a small part of the
PARCC administration. The field
test will be composed of two ad-
ministrations. The first adminis-
tration, the performance-based
assessment, will be given one day
between March 24 and April 11.
The second administration, the
end-of-year assessment, will be
administered one day between
May 5 and June 6. The parents of
students will be notified by letter
if their class was chosen for the
pilot. The PARCC practice test
will include technology-enhanced
items and will be delivered using
the same technology platform
that will be used for field testing,
allowing students and educators
in all PARCC states to become
more familiar with the types of
items that will appear on the
PARCC assessments.

ple Items, please visit www.parc-
