KNOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dear Christian Friend:
In John 16:7, when Christ spoke of returning to Heaven after His earthly ministry
was complete, He promised to send the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit is to be
our Comforter. The actual word used in the original language of the New Testament is a
word that is sometimes translated "Helper." It means one who stands or walks beside
another to lead, direct, comfort, instruct, and help. The Bible teaches that God manifests or
reveals Himself in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity, or Godhead. He is very God. He is not a
third part of the Godhead. He is the Third Person of the Godhead. There is no separation or
division of the Godhead or the being of God. Where God the Father is, all parts of the
Godhead are present. Where God the Son is, all of the Godhead is present.
The Holy Spirit may be called the Common Denominator of Heaven and earth. We
think of God the Father as being in Heaven. God the Son was in Heaven. He came to earth
and, following His resurrection, is now again in Heaven. The Holy Spirit is both in Heaven
and on earth. He is the presence of God on earth now, as Jesus was the presence of God on
earth when He was here in the flesh. However, where any of the Persons of the Godhead
are, they are all present.
The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit is a very important teaching of the Bible. As
Christians, we are taught by the Scriptures to let the Holy Spirit be our leader, guide,
comforter, teacher, and helper in all things. If we are to let Him be all of these things to us,
we must understand who He is and what He does and how we can properly relate to Him in
every part of our lives. While this teaching is very complex, and there are some principles
that we cannot fully understand, there is much that we can learn from the Bible about the
Holy Spirit. A Christian must accept the teaching of the Bible by faith. Before beginning
this study, please quietly bow your head and ask God to open your understanding to the
teaching about the Holy Spirit.

KNOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT

LESSON FOUR
Symbols of the Holy Spirit
Objective:

I.

To learn the various symbols or figures of speech which the Bible

employs in describing the Holy Spirit. Each of the symbols is a
representation standing for or calling for something spiritual or moral in
the life of a Christian.

First Symbol: DOVE

The best known of all the symbols representing the Holy Spirit is found in
many passages throughout the Word of God. Read the following passages and
identify the symbol.
A.

Matthew 3:16-17_____________________________________________________

B.

John 1:32___________________________________________________________

C.

Luke 3:22 __________________________________________________________

D.

What is the characteristic of the dove in Song of Solomon 5:2?

E.

1.

My dove, my _____________

2.

The word undefiled has the same meaning as the word purity. The
dove is a picture of purity. If a Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit,
what will be true in his daily life? _________________________

The first mention of the dove is found in Genesis 8:6-9.

This is in connection with Noah and the flood. The water had covered
the face of the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. Noah sent out from the ark a
raven and a dove. The raven found a scene of desolation compatible to its own
nature and did not return to the ark. But of the dove, the Scripture reads, the
dove found ___ ______ for the _____ of her _____ and she ______ unto him into
the ark.
The raven was not content to light on the dead corpse, as impurity
held no attraction for the dove, and it would not descend and light there
upon. What does this teach a Christian?
_____________________________________________________________________

F.

The second characteristic of the dove is found in Matthew 10:16. In this text,
Jesus was sending His disciples forth to preach the Gospel.
13

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore

wise as serpents, and ___________ as doves. The dove is an emblem of PURITY
and is also an emblem of PEACE.
1.

Read Isaiah 57:20-21. The _________are like the troubled sea when it
cannot _______, whose waters cast up _______ and _______. There is no
_____ saith my God to the _________.

2.

Peace and Purity are closely related. The dove is an emblem of the Holy
Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in every Christian. What should be
evident in the life of a Christian indwelt by the Holy Spirit? ____
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________

3.

We are told that a dove has no gall. Gall is the symbol of bitterness in
scripture. Read and comment on the following scriptures:

4.

a.

Job 20:25 ________________________________________________

b.

Acts 8:22-23 _____________________________________________

A dove, having no gall produces a galless nature, which is p

_____________ and p ______________.

Life Application:
1.

You could paraphrase the above statement as All strife comes from a bitter spirit,
filled with gall. The dove, as an emblem of the Holy Spirit, gives us a picture of the
lifestyle that a Christian should live. Summarize in your own words what place you
think that lifestyle should occupy in your daily living and in your walk before God.

II.

Second Symbol: WATER

The symbol which we will consider in this part of the study of the emblems of
the Holy Spirit is found in John 7:37-39.
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any
man thirst, let him come unto me, and ___________. He that believeth on me, as the
Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living ____________. (But this
spake he of the ____________, which they that believe on him should receive.)
What is the emblem used for the Holy Spirit in these verses?
_____________________________________________________________________
A.

B.

Water is essential to quench thirst. Of all human necessities for life, water is
perhaps the most important.
1.

According to I Corinthians 12:13, when we were saved, what did we

begin to do? ___________________________________________________

2.

In Luke 16:22-24 we find that __________ is necessary to quench a

persons ____________.

3.

In Matthew 5:6, what does this verse tell us will happen when we thirst
(seek and drink)? _________________________________________

4.

Explain what you understand by studying John 6:35.

III.

Third Symbol: OIL

The third symbol which we will consider in our study of symbols that
represents the Holy Spirit, is found in several portions in the Bible. We shall begin
by looking at several passages in the Old Testament.
A.

Old Testament Oil was used for anointing.

KNOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT

LESSON SIX
The Filling of the Holy Spirit
Objective:

For the student to understand what the filling of the Holy Spirit is,
and to learn how to be filled with the Holy Spirit

Text to Read:

Galatians 5:16-26

Memorize:

Ephesians 5:18

The word filled means controlled. There are people who evidently think that the
Holy Spirit comes in quarts and gallons. He does not. A Christian cannot be half filled or
partly filled. The Holy Spirit is a person. He, as the Third Person of the Godhead, is either
in control or not in control. There is no in between.
The Scriptures speak of two types of Christians who were in the world at the time the
Scriptures were written. Likewise, there are two types of Christians in the world today.
I.

Classification of Christians
A.

Read I Corinthians 3:1. List the two types of Christians which Paul referred to
in that verse.

____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

The struggle of every child of God

When God saved you, He saved your soul. He did not save or change your
carnal flesh in any way. Many people think that when they get saved that they will
have no further problems with the flesh. The sooner that a Christian learns that God
did not change his flesh, the better equipped he will be to win the struggle with the
flesh. The victory comes through the Holy Spirit (See Romans 8:1-4).

III.

A.

Righteous living can be accomplished in the life of a Christian by whom?

_____________________________________________________________________

B.

According to Ephesians 5:18, is a Christian commanded to be filled (controlled)

by the Holy Spirit, or is that the decision of each individual Christian?
___________________________________________________________

The Positional Ministry of the Holy Spirit

A clear distinction must be made between the positional truth of the Holy
Spirits ministry and His practical ministry in the life of a Christian. The positional
truths are unchanging. They are works that are accomplished by the Holy Spirit, and
the Christian has no say in them in any way. His practical ministry is offered to
every Christian. However, the practical ministry which He offers to Christians is
optional and at the discretion of each Christian. The two must never be confused.
First, locate the Positional ministries that the Holy Spirit performs.
A.

Romans 8:9, I Corinthians 3:16, and I Corinthians 6:19

_____________________________________________________________________

B.

II Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13, and Ephesians 4:30

_____________________________________________________________________

C.

I Corinthians 12:13 __________________________________________________

At the time of salvation, the Holy Spirit indwells a believer. He becomes the
seal of the believer, and He baptizes the believer into the Body of Christ. This
happened the second you were saved. No believer should ever seek to receive the
26

Holy Spirit after salvation. He should not seek the indwelling of the Holy Spirit; he
should not seek to be sealed by the Holy Spirit, and he should not seek to be baptized
by the Holy Spirit. All of those have been accomplished for us. They can never be
repeated.
IV.

The Practical Ministry of the Holy Spirit

The practical ministry of the Holy Spirit is optional. He does not force you to
be filled or controlled by Him. He offers the Christian power, guidance, direction,
enlightenment, and many other things. To have these characteristics present in our
life, we must meet the condition given in Scripture and walk in obedience to Gods
Word.
A.

In each comparison, the filling of the Spirit is compared to a person who is

under the control of strong drink. Therefore, a person filled with the Holy
Spirit will be under the __________________ of the Holy Spirit.

as God says He will. Our part is to be very careful to be obedient to His
leading.

_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________

B.

List the "works of the flesh" found in verses 19-21 that will quench the Holy
Spirit. ______________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
Let me point out a truth about which many Christians get confused
regarding walking in the Spirit. Reread Galatians 5:16. You do not refrain
from doing the works of the flesh in order to walk in the Spirit. We are to walk
in the Spirit. When we walk in the Spirit, the verse says, ye shall not fulfill
the lust of the flesh. This agrees with Romans, chapter eight.

Life Application:
1.

Have you presented your body to Christ? _____________________________________

2.

Have you made the decision that you will let the Holy Spirit control you? ___________

3.

What do you plan to do in order to please God and not quench the Holy Spirit?
