A brick lined trapezoidal channel has side slopes of 1:1.5. It is required to carry 15m3/s of water. If the average velocity of flow is not to exceed 1 mls. Find. (a ) the wetted perimeter for min: amount of lining ; (b) bed slope assuming Manning's n = 0.015 2. Water is flowing in a rectangular channel with a velocity of 10 ft/sec, depth of 10ft and a width of l0ft. If there is a smooth upward step of 2ft in the channel bed, what expansion in width must simultaneously take place for the up-stream flow to be possible as specified? 3. Calculate the critical depth and the corresponding specific energy for a discharge of 5.0 m3/sec in the following channels.

6. For a trapezoidal channel with base width b = 6.0 m and side slope m = 2, calculate the critical depth of flow if Q = 17 m3/s.

7. Given a trapezoidal channel with a bottom width of 3m, side slope 1.5, a longitudinal
slope of 0.0016 and estimated Mannings n of 0.13, find the normal depth of flow for a discharge of 7.1m3/s.

Problem 8
Figure below shows the phenomenon of hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel, where a rather abrupt change occurs in the depth of the ow.

Figure : Hydraulic jump in Problem 8. a) The upstream depth and velocity are h1 = 1 m and V1 = 10 m/s. Use continuity and momentum conservation (with no friction) to calculate the downstream depth and velocity, h2 and V2 . b) For these ow conditions, calculate the headloss and the rate of energy dissipation in the hydraulic jump. c) If ow direction was changed, i.e., if ow was from right to left, and you knew h2 and V2 to have the values obtained in a, show that h1 and V1 would also have the same values as in a. d) Now, for the reversed ow (ow from right to left), what is the dierence in total head between inow and outow? What is the rate of energy dissipation? What is wrong with this picture?
