Americas most valuable rock collection: Fun facts about the history of Prudential

For over a century, investors have placed their condence in Prudentialand the Rock. Over the years, Prudential has built a reputation for strength based on service, advice and trust. Today, Prudentials name and distinctive Rock logo are among the most enduring brands in U.S. corporate history. As we welcome you to Prudential, we invite you to take a look back at some of our historical highlights:1  John Faireld Dryden founded The Prudential Friendly Society in 1875 in a basement ofce in downtown Newark, N.J. At the time, it offered premiums for as little as three cents a week.2  By the end of The Prudential Friendly Societys rst year in 1875, the company held 284 policies. Within 10 years, Prudential had sold its one millionth policy. By 1911, it had 10 million policies in force.  The rst telephone was installed in Prudential ofces in 1880.  Prudential debuted its corporate symbolthe Rockin 1896, with the slogan Prudential has the Strength of Gibraltar.  In 1950, Prudential became the rst life insurance company to advertise on television, sponsoring Prudential Family Playhouse.  Prudential purchased the Empire State Building for $17 million in 1951, owning the building for four years before selling it to a Chicago-based group.3  Umberto A. Palo, a former high school teacher, set a record in sales for individual agents in 1954 by selling $2.5 million in his rst nine months after joining Prudential.  With more than $200 billion in policies, Prudential became the largest insurance company in the world in 1975.  The Prudential Foundation launched its Focus on Children program in 1991, providing more than $1 million in grants to improve the lives of preschool children.  In 1995, Prudential was selected as one of nine companies to participate in the Federal Diversity Benchmarking Study, part of Vice President Al Gores National Partnership for Reinventing Government.

 Since 1995, more than 250,000 Prudential associates have contributed 1.5 million hours and completed over 6,800 projects as part of Global Volunteer Day. During this years campaign, over 32,000 volunteers are expected to complete about 800 additional projects in more than 12 countries.  On December 13, 2001, Prudential Financial, Inc.s Common Stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PRU.4  As of December 31, 2007, Prudential Financial held approximately $648 billion in assets under management, with operations in the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America.5  Well-known public properties afliated with Prudential include the Prudential Center6 arena in Newark, NJ, home to the NHLs New Jersey Devils; and the Prudential Center in Boston, MA, featuring over 75 shops and restaurants.  2007 marked the 18th year that Prudential ranked on Working Mothers Top 100 Companies for Working Mothers list, and was inducted into the magazines Hall of Fame for 15+ years on the list. The same year, Prudential was also named on DiversityInc.coms Top 50 Companies for Diversity and Executive Female magazines Top Companies for Executive Women, and received a Corporate Equality Index 100% Score from the Human Rights Campaign.7  In 2008, Prudential ranked No. 1 in the Insurance: Life, Health category on Fortune magazines Worlds Most Admired list for the second year in a row. The list is determined by Fortune 500 Global executives, directors and analysts across multiple industries.8
