OPERATOR
Indeed, much in common with other wireless carriers across the world, from mid-2009 to mid-2010, Korea Telecom recorded an incredible 344% increase in 3G mobile data traffic, while China Unicom's 3G traffic increased 62% in a single quarter from Q1 to Q2 of 2010. Many factors have contributed to this surge in demand for wireless bandwidth, notably the proliferation of affordable smart-phones, tablets and modems and the rapidly increasing popularity of mobile video services. The problem is of course, that spectrum availability is limited and the demand for mobile bandwidth is increasing much faster than data revenues. As broadband networks evolve, operators are increasingly trying to match subscriber traffic demands with supply in the form of network upgrades. These may include capacity upgrades at the radio access level, introduction of new technologies or traffic management initiatives, including optimization, offload and policy based management. This unique event will look at the possibilities, challenges and roadmap of improving quality of service and ultimately monetizing network intelligence.

Developing Successful Business Cases for 4G Networks, and Getting Them Financed
Led by Haig Sarkissian & Randall Schwartz, Principal Consultants, Wireless 20/20, LLC
Workshop Objectives
With financing for 4G network developments in the current climate at a premium, developing a successful business case is more important than ever. An operator not only must understand the multitude of technical and financial parameters that go into building a complete business case, but they must also understand the confusing technology options in todays emerging 4G market. This workshop will look at the key success factors for building a winning business case, and understanding what it takes to get networks financed. We will also look at understanding the emerging technologies for HSPA+, WiMAX, LTE-FDD, and LTE-TDD. In addition, we will review case studies for comparing the technologies in a single deployment and transitional business cases to help understand the optimal time for operators to transition from 3G to 4G. The emphasis of this hands-on business planning workshop will be the go-to-market services and pricing strategies for business and consumer markets. Wireless 20/20 will leverage its WiROI Business Case Analysis Tool to present informative and engaging case studies of 4G network initiative and demonstrate the key success factors in developing a winning business case. Attendees will have the opportunity to develop their own business case during this hands-on workshop.
The availability of spectrum is a key concern for operators as they formulate their LTE-deployment plans. There is widespread uncertainty among regulators and operators as to which bands will become available and when, and the likely effect will be to create doubt throughout the supply chain regarding which bands should be the focus for the development of equipment and devices. Operators that are eager to deploy LTE have to make choices based on current availability of spectrum, rather than waiting for new bands to be licensed or for capacity to be freed up. Those planning to deploy in the future have to formulate their plans against a background of uncertainty about spectrum availability and timelines. Defining a large number of bands and band combinations for LTE has helped broaden the options for its deployment, but it risks creating a level of fragmentation that can slow the flow of investment and the drive to bring products to market. Core bands for LTE appear to be 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2500MHz and 2600MHz. But a more detailed picture will emerge only as factors such as the scale and speed of deployments are taken into account, along with considerations such as the choice between FDD and TDD modes, the plans of regulators to make spectrum available and aspects such as vendor commitments and cost implications. In this way, it should be possible to identify a set of core bands that can help the industry fully exploit the potential of LTE technology. The region with the most diverse range of bands for LTE is Asia Pacific, where operators plan to use 10 of the available spectrum bands

LTE Explained
Date: 5th September 2011
This session begins with a discussion of the main requirements for broadband wireless networks and how LTE proposes to meet those requirements. The business of LTE and the evolution of mobile broadband are examined, and comparisons are made with HSPA and WiMAX systems. LTE services are discussed and then used to describe the capabilities required of the radio and core network components. The architecture of the LTE network (SAE) is explained and the functions of each of the network elements are discussed. The radio interface is based on OFDMA and supports advanced features such as MIMO and interference management - these concepts are explained in basic terms, as well as the topic of IMT spectrum allocation. Overall, you will gain a good appreciation of the drivers behind the adoption of LTE technology, as well as the architecture and operation of the LTE system - including an overview of the main features of the OFDM based radio interface that determines the capability of the technology.
