Genres :
1. Narrative Explanation : Text which contains about story fantasy, fairy tale, or a true story that has been exaggerated. Usually there is a moral to be learned at the end of the story. Use of past tense. Type of Narrative ; Adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, dilemma stories, dialogue, myths, legends, fairy tales, fables. Purpose : To amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways; narratives deal with problematic events which lead to a crisis or lurning point of some kind, which in turn finds a resolution. Generic Structure : Orientation : sets the scene and introduces the participants. Evaluation : a stepping back to evaluate the plight. Complication : a crisis arises. Resolution : the crisis is resolved, for better or for worse. Re-orientation : optional.

Example : In earlier times there lived a , who named Snow White . He lived with his aunt and uncle because his parents died . One day she heard her uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they wanted to go to America and they did not have enough money to take Snow White with them . princess Snow White did not want her uncle and aunt to do this . So he decided to escape .

2. Recount Explanation : Recount is a text type that report events, occurrences, or events that befall a person, or a person's experience. An example could be a diary or a biography of a person. The purpose of the recount dalah to tell what happened in the past in accordance with the order of time. Purpose : To retell something that happened in the past and to tell a series of past event.

Generic Structure : Orientation : provides the setting and introduces participants. Events : tell what happened, in what sequence. Re-orientation : optional-closure of events.

Example : One day, when I was ten years old, my father bought an old motorcycle. That was " Honda 75". I think it was small light object and easy to ride it. I persuaded my father to teach me to ride " Honda 75 ". Firstly, my father refused my request and promised that he would teach me two or three years later, but I still whimpered. Finally, my father surrendered and promised to teach me.

3. News Item Explanation : News item is a text the which informs readers about events of the day. The events are Considered newsworthy or important. (News item is a text that gives information about events / daily events. Daily event deserves to be considered news or [could be considered] important). Purpose : To inform leaders, listeners or viewers about events the day which are consideren newsworthy or important. Generic Structure : Newsworthy event(s) : recounts the event in summary from. Backround events : elaborate what happened, to whom, in what circumstances. Sources : comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the event.

Example : Air Force still Investigating Cause of Plane Crash The Air Force is still investigating the cause of last Thursdays military plane crash on Mount Salak, Bogor, an officials say.

4. Review Explanation : Review Text is one of the types of English text (genre) aimed at reviewing the work in the form of films, books, and other objects to determine the quality, advantages and disadvantages that these works were intended for readers or listeners masses. Purpose : To critique an art work, event for a public audience. Such works of art include movies TV shows, books, plays, operas, recordings, exhibitons, concerts and ballets.

Generic Structure : Orientation : places the wook in its general and particular context, often by comparing it with others of its kind or through analogue with a non-art object or event. Interpretive Recount summaries the plot and/or provides an account of how the reviewed rendition of the wook came into being; is optional, but if present often recursive. Evaluation : provides an evaluation of the wook and/or its performance or production; is usually recursive. Evaluative Summation : provides a kind of punchline which sums up the reviewrs opinion of the art event as a whole; is optional. Example : Bravo for this movie, taken from the last story of Madagascar II, the movie tells about story of amazing animal adventure who escape from the zoo to the jungle in africa, and want to return again to the zoo in central park new york. Alex the Lion, Melman the giraffe, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the hippo and King Julian the lemur try to escape from the jungle, and then they need to find the penguins in the casino in monte carlo city. And then, they travel to monte carlo. However, they meet animal control after spoil a party. Fortunately, they can to escape.

5. Descriptive Explanation : Descriptive text is a text that aims to describe something specific / particular: a person, an animal, an object, a place. Purpose : To describe a particular person, place or thing in detail. Generic Structure : Identifications : identifies phenomenon to be described. Description : describes parts qualities, characteristics. Example : My mother is a beautiful person. She is not tall but not short, and she has curly hair and brown. Her eyes color are like honey and her color skin color light brown, and she has a beautiful smile. Her weight likes 120 lbs.

6. Report Explanation : Report also referred to as the observation report. Report mendeskribsikan or give information about something based on fact, it is somewhat different with text descriptions which usually contains the views / opinions of the author. Report describe something in general, while the descriptive text describing something in particular. Purpose : To describe the way things are, with reference to arange of natural, man-made and social phenomena in our environment.

Generic Structure : General classifications : tells what the phenomenon under discussion is. Description tells what the phenomenon under discussion is like in terms of (1) parts, (2) qulitifies, (3) habits or behaviors, if living; uses, if non-natural. Example : Lightning is a sudden shock, very fast and the electric force between the cloud and ground, or from cloud to cloud. the speed of lightning, or thunder, can be several miles long. It is so hot, with average temperatures of 34,000 Celsius, that the surrounding air suddenly expands with a loud explosion, and sounds. This is what we hear thunder. Lightning occurs in hot, basah.saat rain storms, humid air is driven up to a great height. This is a type of cloud called cumulonimbus.

7. Explanation - Explanation : Explanation text is a text that gives a detailed explanation of the various things that are around us, ranging from natural disasters, culture, art, science and other interesting things. To differentiate with other literary text explanation is that the text explanation is usually used to answer the question "how" and "why". - Purpose : To explain the processes involved in the formation or working of natural or socio-cultural phenomena. - Generic Structure : A general statement to position the readers. A sequenced explanation of why or how something occurs. Closing. - Example : The Fan is an electronic device that everybody use it in their house. People use the fan to make the air in the room cooler, especially in hot day. And how does the fan work? 8. Procedure - Explanation : Procedure text is text that contains a set of instructions or directions to help us do something. Purpose : To describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps. Generic Structure : Goal Material (not required for all procedural texts). Step 1-n (i.e. Goal followed by a series of steps oriented to achieving the Goal)

9. Analytical Explanation : Analytical Exposition is a type of text that belongs to the type of Argumentation Text where the text contains detailed author thinking about a phenomenon that is around. Purpose : To persuade the reader or listener that somethings the case. Generic Structure : Thesis Position : introduces topic and indicates writers position. Preview : outlines the main arguments to be presented. Arguments Point : reslates main arguments outlined in Preview. Elaboration : develops and supports each point/argument Reiteration : reslates writers position Example : Everybody must pay attention of drugs. Drugs are very dangerous for us. Why it is very dangerous for us? Because its can caused harm to our body. 10. Hortatory Explanation : Hortatory Exposition is a type of English text which presents the authors attempt to influence the reader to do something or act in a particular case. In Hortatory Exposition, the author lists some opinion on certain things to reinforce the main idea of the text. Purpose : To persuade the readers or listener that somethings should or should not be the case. Generic Structure : Thesis : announcement of issue concern.

Arguments : reasons for concern, leading to recommendation. Recommendation : statement of what ought or ought not to happen. Example : The National examination result will be publicly enounced in next short time. Euphoria will flood for those who get success. In the other hand, It will be sorry to hear that there are some of them do not succeed in their national final examination. For those who succeed soon will think to decide; where will they be after graduating high school? Actually it will be easy to decide for those has been arranged and thought earlier but for those have not planed yet, it will be quite confusing.

11. Discussion Explanation : a text which contains about a problematic discourse. This problematic discourse is discourse that has two camps between Pro (supports) and Contra (opponents), between supporters and opponents of the issue issue. Purpose : To present information and opinions about issues in more one side of an issue (For/Pros and Against/Cons). Generic Structure : Issue. Statement. Preview. Arguments for and against or statement of differing points of view. Point. Elaboration . Conclusion or Recommendation. Example : The Advantage and Disadvantage of Nuclear Power Issue Nuclear power is generated by using uranium which is a metal mined in various part of the world. The first large scale of nuclear power station was opened at Calder Hall in Cumbria, England in 1956. 12. Anecdote Explanation : Anecdote text is one of the English text of the Narration (see type-type text) in which the incident mencerotakan odd / odd, either fact or fiction (not real). Purpose : events recounted odd or unusual events to entertain the reader. Generic Structure : 1.Abstract The first structure of anecdote Text is Abstract . In the Abstract , the authors usually begin to introduce odd or unusual events that will diceritakanya . There are a number of anecdote Abstract Text begins with the use of interrogative sentence , but not all of

anecdote Abstract Text using interrogative sentence . 2.Orienation The second structure of anecdote Text is Orientation . As in Narrative text , Text Orientation in anecdote also tells who, when , and where the incidence of odd or unusual events occurred . 3.Crisis The third structure of anecdote Text is Crisis . In this section telling the odd or unusual events occurred . The author described the events in detail . 4.Reaction/Incident The final structure of the anecdote Text is reaction . In the reaction , the author tells the story of how the subject ( doer ) to solve the problem and end of events such odd or unusual . - Example : Snake in Bath Abstract How would you like to find a snake in your bath? A nasty one too! Orientation We had just moved into a new house, which had been empty for so long that everything was in a terrible mess. Anna and I decided we would clean the bath first, so we set to, and turned on the tap. 13. Spoof - Explanation : a text that contains humor, although most of the text has been modified from the original. - Purpose : To tell a short story or event with a humorous twist. The stories are normal in the beginning and have a funny twist at the end that makes you laugh. - Generic Sturcture : Orientation provides an introduction to the characters, setting, settings etc.. Events, provides event or events Twist, ending the story (the ending is considered funny, sometimes unexpected) - Example : The Bathroom Story Two years ago some friends and I came to Indonesia to learn some Bahasa Indonesia. While here, we stayed in villages with host families. One friend and I lived in Rejoso, and my other friend lived in a village called Jeding. Whenever we were asked where we lived, my friend said, Saya tinggal di Jeding. Everyone would start laughing.
