Tomorrow is PURPLE DAY children can wear something Purple and bring a gold coin donation to raise awareness for Epilepsy. Please support this charity as we have a number of children in our school suffering this condition. EPLIEPSY & EPLIEPSY AWARENESS!
Do you, or someone you know or love have epilepsy? Did you know Doctors have identified hundreds of different epilepsy symptoms? Did you know that around 50 million Aussies suffer from one of the many different types of Epilepsy, and thats just the number of diagnosed sufferers! And did you know that there is a connection between strokes & Epilepsy? In 2008, my daughter suffered what is known as a TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) otherwise known as a mini stroke. It happened just 6 weeks after her 4 th birthday. Most people who present after suffering one of these usually go on to suffer a more serious & sometimes fatal stroke. So after 3 months, I was thankful that there had been no more activity of the stroke. I was mistaken. She was then diagnosed presenting 2 types of Epliepsy. She is now 8 years old, and suffers most commonly from what are known as Absence seizures . This is where she will temporarily lose consciousness from anywhere between 10 seconds to 1 minute! Most of the time, Epilepsy can be controlled by medication, however this doesnt always work f or everyone and there is NO cure for epilepsy. The most common types of Epilepsy are; Tonic Clonic Tonic-Clonic Myoclonic Absence Seizures and Atonic Seizures. Seizures can affect the visual, hearing & smell senses. They all involve a loss of consciousness, and typically happen without warning. 60% of seizures are convulsive, whilst 40% are non convulsive. Genetics can play a huge part in epilepsy & strokes so I recommend knowing your family history, Being aware of all the symptoms of stroke & epilepsy & making sure that at least 2 people in your household are first aid trained in dealing with stroke & Epilepsy. March 26th is Epilepsy awareness Day, on this day, supporters of the foundation wear purple with pride to raise awareness and show support for epilepsy suffers nationwide. STAFF TRAINING DAY REMINDER

As mentioned in previous Newsletters, the school will be closed on Friday 7th March for one of our staff training days this year. Please note that this training day is the Friday before the Labour Day weekend, thereby facilitating a four day weekend. Teachers will be working on developing our curriculum planning processes incorporating iPAD technology. Further to the curriculum guidelines provided through AusVELS, we aim to develop a Strategic Plan for each year level that will identify how iPads will be incorporated at each year level. Ill provide a report on how this day unfolds in an upcoming Newsletter.

Student Safety
Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to and from school. Here are the important points to mention: Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger. Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff. Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home. We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.

One horrible smoky day, we scrambled down to the Tootgarook foreshore because we were doing Ironman! I was so excited but things were about to change... We were getting ready to dash our way to victory and I was racing first. Pweee, the whistle had blown. I trembled down the squashy sand. I was on my board splashing down on the strong waves. Oh my, I was slipping off my board... I am numb all over from the cold water and from paddling so hard. I was scared I would lose. I thought to myself, Is Riley going to hunt me down on the canoes? I lost, oh well. I was confused and puffed so I relaxed by making a sand chair, a comfy one. We walked back to school and I realised I had LEFT MY GLASSES BEHIND! NOOOOOOOOOOO! Hopefully I will find them soon YES! My mum has found them in the sand! What a crazy day. Thanks Mum. By Oliver Humble 4/5S.
