Questions 26
1
I travelled to Singapore from my home in Trang, Thailand, on 21 March last year
for a fourweek English course. If all went well, I would hopefully complete my secondary s
chool
education there. Even though I was 14 and it was my first time abroad alone, my
parents
didn t worry too much because I would be staying with a guardian family. I was enj
oying
my month in Singapore.
2
On 3 April, I made plans to meet my friends at East Coast Park, so we could hang
out one
last time before I returned to Bangkok in five days. That morning, I walked to t
he MRT
station in Ang Mo Kio. I found a spot just behind the yellow line that stops peo
ple from
standing too close to the edge of the platform. Soon, I could feel the pressure
of the crowd
at my back.
10
3
Just as the train approached the station, the crowd pressed forward. I felt some
one pushing
me, and though I tried to resist, I lost my balance. Seconds before the train ar
rived, I fell
across the tracks. Before too long, the train s front wheels rolled across my legs
. By the
time the train stopped, I was trapped underneath. It was all very strange though
I could hear
people screaming. I didn t fully realise what had happened. Then I looked at my le
gs. The
train wheel had run directly over my right kneecap and just below my left kneeca
p. It was
like each leg had been cut into two. The bones were completely broken, and there
was only
fresh and tattered skin below the point where the wheel had hit each leg.
15
4
My legs were completely numb, but my face was intensely hot, covered with blood
that
flowed from a gash on my forehead. I must have hit something as I fell.Looking t
oward the
platform, I shouted, Help me! Help me! Quickly, quickly! I didn t cry because I knew
I
might not be able to control myself.
20
5
The rescue team arrived shortly and a man crawled under the train and put an oxy
gen mask
over my face. As he placed a harness around me to lift me out, I told him I was
from
Thailand and asked him to bring my legs with me. I was taken straight to Tan Tok
Seng
Hospital. During the ambulance ride, my thoughts flew - How could I tell my mum
and dad
about the accident? What if they couldn t reattach my legs, how would I go back to
school?
How would I live my life after this?
25
6
At the hospital, I was taken to the operating room where a doctor asked me many
questions.
I think he was trying to assess how well I responded. Finally, he told me that t
hey would not
be able to reattach my legs. I accepted what he said. Whatever was going to happ
en would
happen. There was no point in crying about what was already lost. I was given an
aesthetic
for the surgery, but I didn t lose consciousness for a while. I could hear the bon
e saw
cutting through my legs. It only took five minutes. The doctor had finished befo
re I passed
out. I later learned that officials from the Thai Embassy in Singapore had come
to the
hospital and had contacted my father. My mother was in shock. She couldn t accept
that I

I stayed in the hospital for two months and ten days. Then a magical thing happe
ned. Her
Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the second daughter of the King
of
Thailand, learned about my accident and had me transferred to a rehabilitation c
entre back
home. She also offered me the chance to finish my education at the Chitralada Sc
hool in
Bangkok. I was so happy because the school is very difficult to get into. It was
very kind of
her to help out an ordinary person like me.
40
8
At the rehabilitation centre, I was fitted with German-made prosthetic legs, whi
ch cost
several million baht. Learning to walk again was difficult. Every step needed a
lot of
training.
45
9
I m often asked how I can still smile despite my accident. I told them that what I
have lost
are legs, not my life. I think my positive attitude comes from how my parents ra
ised me.
This is what my dad said in an interview, I tell both my daughters that nothing i
s certain. I
could die tomorrow or in the next five years. Anything could happen-like a tsuna
mi-so we
always have to be prepared. We have to know how to solve our problems. I think m
y
daughter handled this accident very well.
