EURNEX WHOS WHO 2006

To date EURNEX has made substantial progress towards satisfying these objectives. Ten Poles of Excellence have been established covering the principal technical disciplines on the railway. This has been achieved by market-driven top down and technology-push bottom up approaches. Processes are in place to promote co-operation between scientists, both within and between the Poles, and first common projects with industry and operators are already launched under the EURNEX brand. Besides its core task the provision of excellent rail research EURNEX is going to implement unique services for the rail sector, such as G EURNEX EURail the virtual European Rail University for the training of post graduate rail professionals, G The most comprehensive knowledge library on the rail system, G Neutral, scientific services for rail test and simulation as well as product qualification services to promote the interoperability of the European rail system, G gender equality activities By mid-term of the granting period, the EC emphasises that the European rail research is starting to notice the EURNEX brand giving us the motivation to continue to build up a sustainable, self-supporting Network of Excellence for rail research. Personal skills and expertises are vital to the success of the network. Trusting and durable cooperation within EURNEX as well as between EURNEX and customers from industry and operators bases on personalities. This booklet is designed to illustrate the wide range of personal capabilities covered by the EURNEX. It should assist decision-makers in the rail sector to find the excellent scientists to meet their specific needs. I hope you will make regular use of it and find it supportive.

EURNEX Who is Who in EURNEX a directory of senior railway researchers in 2006

The European Rail Research Network of Excellence (EURNEX) is a world-class network that integrates Europes leading rail researchers across the full range of technical, social and economic disciplines. With the strong support of the European Union EURNEX contributes to the future competitive European rail system by supporting major EU industrial and transport policy aims. EURNEX mission is to provide high-quality, cost and time efficient research focusing on the needs of the customers rail supply industry and operators as well as European and national bodies. The main objectives of EURNEX are: To improve integration of the European Rail research landscape, To build on existing strengths and broaden the research excellence by fostering multidisciplinary cooperation between its members, G To support the improvement of the competitiveness and the economic stability of the railway sector by creating a customer oriented and durable network, G To carry out research in support of the European Commissions sustainable transport policies and ERRACs Strategic Rail Research Agenda, G To promote transfer of research output to the railway sector.

The European Rail Research Network of Excellence (EURNEX) has been set up under the 6th Framework Programme for Research, Technology and Development of the European Union. It integrates the leading rail researcher from scientific institutions all over Europe, including the international associations UIC, UNIFE and UITP as direct docking points to the customers of rail research - supply industry and operators. Currently, EURNEX consists of 66 member institutions from 19 European countries and it involves more than 600 senior researchers from the scientific disciplines with relevance for the entire railway system. Thematic poles of excellence form the scientific backbone of the EURNEX. Starting with their inauguration in early 2005, the poles consists of the most capable researchers all over Europe in particular thematic areas. The rail research priorities outlined by ERRACs SRRA 2020 priorities as well as the recommendations from EURNEX Advisory and Scientific Board matched with member capabilities resulted into a balanced set of ten poles of excellence. Even if the thematic poles represent the scientific pillars of the network, the interdisciplinary cross-pole cooperation is a main asset of the network. Therefore EURNEX with the broad expertise of involved scientists is able to tackle and resolve complex problems along the future European rail system. The first edition of the EURNEX who-is-who booklet has been produced to help decision-makers of the rail sector to identify and to contact the best researcher for their actual needs. The booklet starts with the two indexes. These list the senior researchers according to surname and institution and will allow you to find out quickly who is who. Further on it is divided into ten sections, one for each pole, and lists the leading senior researchers according to their pole membership. Each chapter starts with the poles leader and vice-leader. The entry for each researcher provides contact details as well as brief information about competencies and particular experiences, a selection of principal publications and where applicable, any patents or licences held. An electronic copy of is available via the EURNEX web portal www.eurnex.net and regular updates of the EURNEX who-is-who booklet in printed and in virtual format are planned on an annual basis.
