INTRODUCTION
Our World is a teenage lifestyle DVD giving an insight into the lives of teenagers both in the US and in the UK. The DVD consists of twelve units, graded in terms of language to broadly cover Starter, Elementary and Pre-Intermediate levels. These levels are roughly allocated four units each: Units 14 cover Starter, 58 cover Elementary and 912 cover Pre-Intermediate. The topics of the DVD have been specifically chosen to cover topics that are of interest to teenagers, such as fashion and music. It is ideal for use alongside In Sync as revision or to further extend language. It may also be used alongside other courses of a similar nature. The complete scripts for the units can be found on page 59 of these worksheets.

Why use Our World in the classroom?

As well as giving the chance for students to do something different from the standard book-based activities in the classroom, Our World also provides them with the opportunity to: hear teenagers using real English. hear a variety of different British and American accents and pronunciation. hear language they have studied in class in real life. develop listening skills such as listening for gist, listening for inference and intensive listening, while also being able to use natural signals such as body language. become better acquainted with English in conversational situations.

How are the DVD worksheets arranged?

There are four pages of worksheets for each of the twelve units. Each group of worksheets provides enough work for at least one forty-minute lesson but may allow for more or for the setting of homework. The worksheet activities are divided into three groups: Before watching, While watching and After watching. The first section, Before watching, can be done in class or for homework before the lesson. The final After watching sections can be done in the same class, the following class or for homework.

Before watching
These activities are designed for use before students watch the unit. They are designed to check students background knowledge on the subjects and either access the vocabulary that students already know on the topic or introduce vocabulary they will need to understand the DVD. Once they have finished these activities they should be ready to watch.

While watching
In this section students will either see the whole DVD or parts of it, several times and will answer questions or complete charts or tables. The first viewing may be for general comprehension of a topic, with the second and third viewings for more detailed comprehension.

After watching
After they have completed watching the DVD and doing all the relevant tasks, students will be asked to complete a further activity or two using the information they saw in the DVD and their own cultural experiences and knowledge.

DVD techniques in class

Prediction
Encourage students to predict what they are going to see. This can be done from the beginning by just giving them the title of the unit. It can also be done when they see the Before watching activity or after the Before watching activity. You can also encourage more detailed predication by asking students to pre-read their While watching tasks. Whenever necessary, you can guide your students in predicting by offering prompts e.g. Then what happens? Prediction activities involve students from the very beginning of the unit and engage their attention. As students now have more of a reason to watch they are more likely to actively participate.

Silent listening
Another way to take advantage of prediction skills is to watch part of the DVD with the sound off. Students can see the context and what is happening but do not know exactly what the people are saying. Encouraging them to guess what the people are saying promotes the use of visual clues to aid understanding. This activity can also be good language practise of what they have learnt so far.

Listening without subtitles

Most of the DVD should be watched with sound but without subtitles. This develops students listening skills. All of the activities in the worksheets are designed for use without subtitles.

Listening with subtitles

The subtitles can be turned on during the last viewing of a unit. If they are turned on before, students will focus more on reading than on listening. Once the relevant listening activities have been completed, however, listening with subtitles can work as a check or a chance to review or take note of useful language that has been used in the unit.

Blind listening
Students can listen with their eyes closed or the screen covered. This would allow you to test language recall, i.e. can the students remember specific key phrases from the listening. One drawback of this technique is that students already do this with listening from a CD.

Freeze frame (using pause control)

You can stop the video at key moments either to practise prediction or to get total recall on what was shown before. This can be used particularly when checking answers students have given, especially where they are having problems. It can also be used for highlighting key pieces of language.

Listening for gist

Some of the Before watching activities encourage listening for gist by showing the whole video or a significant part of it. These allow students to get the general idea of a section or a unit, which will help them to later understand in detail what is going on in the unit.

Intensive listening
Some of the worksheets encourage intensive listening, where students focus on key pieces of information on the DVD. Intensive listening can also be used as a final listening after the exercises are complete for students to focus on key language.

Follow-up activities
The worksheets provide follow-up activities for students to either do in class or at home. However further activities can be done, for example summarising what students have learnt in the units, having debates on the topics in class or encouraging students to do their own projects on the topic. These activities encourage students to use the language they have seen and heard during the DVD for their own communication.

Tips for using Our World in class

Use a variety of techniques
Most of the worksheets will allow you to use a variety of skills in the classroom. However you can encourage more listening for gist by playing the whole unit at the start and getting students to tell you what it was all about. This helps students to see they can understand the whole unit without having it broken down or having to rely on the organisation of the exercises.

Encourage active participation

Encourage students to think about the implications of what they have seen and also predict what they expect to see next.

Encourage the use of visual communication

Draw students attention to the use of body language, posture etc. Help students to become aware that they can use these clues to understand peoples emotions and how they feel about something.

Encourage the use of audio information

Ask students to focus on the way people say things, for example, their tone of voice (how they express anger, confusion, understanding etc.). Also focus on their pronunciation and their use of stress. Point out to students that meaning is often conveyed by the way people say things rather than the words they choose to use.

Encourage personalisation
Most of the After watching activities employ the use of personalisation. However, the units provide a lot of scope for further personalisation. Involve students by asking what they know about certain topics, how they would react in certain situations, how they would feel etc.. Its important for students to be able to relate to the topics and issues on the DVD. The units also provide scope for role-playing or designing their own TV programmes on the same topic, about their own country e.g. the latest teenage fashion in Poland.

Make the lesson enjoyable

The use of the DVD and its worksheets in class is supposed to provide an entertaining yet educational option to the more common use of the coursebook. So remember to keep these lessons enjoyable as well as rewarding. Encourage students to identify with the teenagers on the DVD and compare their own feelings to those shown in the DVD. Encourage them to agree or disagree with them, just as they would with people of their own age in their own everyday environments. This helps to bring the English language to life for the students, which is especially important if the students are studying in their own country where they may rarely come across realistic English usage. Through the medium of the DVD and its worksheets, Our World shows learning English to be a relevant and useful experience which can be used to communicate and make friendships with teenagers all over the world.

Spotlight on school meals

All students in Britain eat lunch at school every school day. Many students bring packed lunches of sandwiches, cakes and fruit from home. Only about forty per cent of students eat food that is cooked in the school kitchens. They choose this food from the cafeteria. The cafeteria is like a buffet with many kinds of food on it. Students choose the food they want to eat. Many students and parents dont like the food in cafeterias and give packed lunches instead. Because of this, a famous chef, Jamie Oliver, helped schools give better meals. Schools must offer many different kinds of food because many students have special diets. Some students are vegetarians or even vegans (they dont eat any animal products, including eggs and milk). Some students have allergies, e.g. to nuts or eggs. Other students are members of religious groups, e.g. they are Muslims or Jews, and they have to have special diets. For students with these special diets, many families prefer to give packed lunches.

Eton the most famous school in Britain

The most famous school in Britain is Eton College, but it is not an ordinary school. Parents must pay nearly 20,000 each year. Old students of Eton College include twenty-one kings and princes. There are also many scientists, writers, sportsmen, artists and politicians. Eton College started in 1440, more than 500 years ago. It is a school for about 1, 300 boys from thirteen to eighteen years old. Eton is a boarding school so the boys live, eat, work and sleep at the school. About fifty boys live in each house but their lessons are in the main school. The boys wake up at 7.30 every morning and then they have breakfast. They go to the chapel (a small church) at 8.40 and lessons begin at 9.00. There are five lessons in the morning. The boys have lunch at 13.30. In the afternoon, there are sports and other activities. In the evening the boys do their homework and have supper. At 21.30, its lights out

and all the boys must go to sleep. Every day is the same. The boys have lessons every day except Sunday. Eton is a very good school because it has expert teachers, small classes and good facilities for lessons and sports.

Country life for the city boy?

by Mary Wiseman
David is a city boy. He lives in London. His family work in London and go on holiday every year to New York. He doesnt know the country at all. This summer he went on holiday to his cousin Pauls house. Paul lives in the country. He has never been to the city but he has seen it on TV. I asked David what he thought of Pauls life in the country. David: Paul is very lucky to live on the farm. I would like to stay there forever. Every day is different and there is so much to do. I love the fresh air and being outside all the time. In the city you cannot play football outside. People always complain and the parks are dirty. In the country you play outside all day! Its great, I didnt open my computer once! You can ride your bicycle anywhere theres no traffic and nobody will steal it. In the city somebody stole my bicycle twice in one year! Of course, sometimes the weather is bad and you have to stay indoors but the weather is bad in the city, too. It gives you a chance to read more. The city is also very expensive. Here in the country nearly everything is free! What does Paul think? Paul: I think David is crazy! He lives in the city do he can go to the cinema everyday. I watch the animals for entertainment! Living the country is really boring, especially in winter. You cant ride your bike in the cold and rain. There are exciting shops and clubs in the city. We only have three shops in the village. I hope David invites me to his house, I might not come back!

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

One of the most popular quiz programmes on television in the world is called Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? In Britain, the quiz master is Chris Tarrant. He asks the contestants fifteen questions. The first questions are easy but later they are more difficult. If you can answer the fourteenth question, you can win 500,000. You can win a million pounds if you can answer the last question. Of course, the last question is very difficult. All the questions on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? are multiple-choice questions. After you hear the question, you see four answers. Only one answer is correct. You have to choose the correct answer. If you dont know the answer to a question, there are three ways you can get help: you can ask the quizmaster to take away two wrong answers: you can ask the studio audience which answer is right; or you can telephone a friend and ask for help. You can only do these things once. Very few people win the million pounds. The first person won a millon pounds one year after the programme started. Today, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? can be seen in more than 100 countries and is now the worlds most popular quiz programme.

The best part-time jobs for teenagers

When I was a kid the best part-time job was delivering newspapers to peoples houses. Today people read papers on the internet. So, what can teenagers do? Here are some ideas: 1 Babysitting is the most popular job for teenagers. Sometimes there is nothing for you to do. The children are already asleep and you can spend the night watching TV and playing computer games and you get paid! However, parents now want people who have some training. There are special courses you can do to become a qualified part-time babysitter. 2 Many teenagers like working in coffee shops. Coffee shops are very popular now. The work is not too hard and you get to meet lots of people in your job. Good for people who also like music and laptops and of course, coffee! 3 If you know about clothes, make-up, electronics or computers maybe the best part-time job is to work in a shop. Of course, you should choose a job that is the same as your interests. You may be lucky and work in a shop you like and then you will get discounts on the things you buy. 4 Today lots of people have pets and the most common pet is a dog. However, they dont have time to walk their dogs or look after them. So, if you like dogs then dog grooming and walking are a good choice. You will also gets lots of exercise and have lots of new friends four-legged friends, that is!

The Eurovision Song Contest is a competition, held every year, to find the best song in Europe. It is one of the most popular TV programmes in the world. The competition started in 1957 and still takes place every May. Fifty-one countries have participated in that time and there are so many countries in the contest now that they have semi-finals as well as the final. However, here in the Britain, we are confused. We dont understand why so many countries are interested. The bands and singers in the competition are usually not famous. Where are the Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Bjork or Enrique Iglesias? Every year we laugh at the contest and every year we get low marks. But in countries like Greece, Turkey, Russia and Scandinavia the competition is very important. Britain has won only twice since 1977 and the last time was in 1997. Germany used to be like Britain, but then, in 2009 Germany said Enough! They held a special competition and the winner, Lena, became a pop star in Germany. When she won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 nobody was surprised in Germany. Just to make sure, Germany entered Lena into the competition again in 2011. Now the British were the only people laughing at Eurovision. So, for 2011 we entered the boy band Blue into the competition. With three number one singles and four number one albums they were sure to win. They finished eleventh. Lena also failed and Azerbaijan celebrated their first ever win. Next year, will the British be laughing or crying? I dont know but we in Britain have to accept that Eurovision is very popular and we need to win it again!

Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren Lizzie Lauren My friend Lauren is here on holiday from the USA, so we can see the sights of London together. And the perfect way to do that is to go on a boat down the river. Ive got my guide book and map, so why dont you come with us on a trip down the River Thames? Thats Big Ben, isnt it? Yes. The Houses of Parliament are behind it. Thats where the British Government meets. Some parts of the building are very old, from the eleventh century. The boats starting, lets go to the front. The Thames divides London in half, north and south. Thats amazing, what is it? Its the London Eye. Its fantastic, isnt it? Its 135 metres high, and from the top you can see for forty kilometres. It moves very slowly, so you can really enjoy the view. Thats the South Bank, its an arts centre. You can go to the theatre there, or to the cinema. Where are we, on the map? Were here. Thats the Millennium Bridge. Its very modern and simple. Do you see that building there? Thats the Globe Theatre. Its a modern copy of Shakespeares original theatre. They put on plays there, mainly Shakespeare of course. Id like to see a play there. Now this place is quite scary. Its the Tower of London. Its over 900 years old. It was a prison. Many famous people died here, including Anne Boleyn, one of the wives of King Henry the Eighth. Its a museum now. Thats where the Crown Jewels are, isnt it? Yes, thats right. The largest diamond in the world is there, the Star of Africa. But look, heres Tower Bridge. Do you recognise it? Oh yes, its really famous. It opens for tall ships. That really tall building over there is Canary Wharf. Its a centre for business. Theres so much to see. London is incredible. Phew Im really tired. Well thats perfect. The boat turns round here and goes back to Westminster. We can sit down now. Thanks for telling me all that stuff. Now, about tomorrow, can we take this trip again?

3 Sport
Lizzie Whats your favourite sporting event? Is it world cup football, motor racing, the world series baseball, or do you like sports which are hot? Skateboarding, in-line skating, and BMX biking are all hot street sports. Today were in Chichester near London to see some hot street sports in action. As you can see these street sports are fast, exciting, and sometimes quite dangerous. Im with George and Sam. They like to come here to skate. George, why do you like in-line skating? Well, its fast, exciting and you can do it anywhere. What about clothes? Is style important in skating clothes? Yes definitely, you need to look cool and be able to move freely. Thanks for talking to us today. Now lets see George and Sam in action. The most popular sport in the UK is football. Most boys play football at school. Every weekend thousands of young people play football in parks. My favourite sport is football, and my favourite team is Arsenal. I like watching football. At the weekend I play football at the park. My favourite sport is football, and my favourite team is Manchester United. Other sports which are popular with boys are rugby and cricket. So thats the boys. A lot of girls play football too, but what other sports do girls usually play? British girls play hockey and netball. And they swim. Thats fantastic, Alex. Well done, Alex. Do you train every day? Yes I do, I come to the sports centre every day and swim for about two hours. And whats your ambition for the future? I want to train in the USA, and then win a big race there. Thanks Alex, and good luck. OK, lets see how they do it in the USA. Thanks, Lizzie. Here in the USA there are some of the greatest sports personalities in the world. And we have many great sports teams, too.The most popular team sport in the USA is basketball. Eleven million young people play basketball regularly. American football and

baseball are also big here in the States. But the big surprise is that soccer is now one of the hottest team sports around. American baseball is very exciting to watch. On a Saturday afternoon friends and family often go together to watch a baseball game. Its a tradition. The teams have great names like the Boston Red Sox. America is also famous for its football. Watch this. So why dont footballers ever get hurt? They wear lots of padding, thats why. They wear shoulder pads, knee pads, and a helmet. Almost half of all high school athletes are now female. Basketball and soccer are very popular with girls. And me, Im not good at sports, but there is one thing I can do. I could be a cheerleader. See you.

Cait Well, Anna and Justin say that they always choose the same sort of clothes. Theyre bored with the way they look. Everyone feels like that at some time, and its very difficult to change. Jason So, youre going to suggest some new ideas and different styles. Cait Yes. And some exciting colours. Jason Great, perhaps I can get some good tips myself. Well, Anna and Justin are waiting for us in the studio. Lets go. Hi, Anna. Hi, Justin. What do you think of the clothes? Anna Theyre great, I never get the chance to try on clothes like these. Justin Well, Im not sure. I usually just go to the same shops and buy a new pair of the same jeans. Anna Justin never takes a risk with his clothes. I often tell him to buy something new, but he doesnt want to. Justin Well, I dont want to buy something and then hate it when I get home. Cait Which is the reason were here to try some new ideas. Now, Justin, whats your favourite colour? Justin Black, then everything matches everything else. Cait Yes, I can see that. Now, why dont you try this with these? Justin Red and yellow? Anna Just try it, Justin. What about these as well? Cait And Anna, why dont you try this pink vintage top with this denim skirt? Anna Okay, thanks. Yvette Cait Magazines, TV and pop stars influence me. Street markets are great places to find bargains. Especially accessories like scarves and belts. Why pay high prices for designer scarves when you can get something like this for half the price? Arent these earrings lovely? And look at this beautiful silver necklace. These little bags are great. I love this pink one. Okay, I think Ive got enough now. Lets go back to the studio. A black skirt and a floral top. That black skirt really suits you. Baggy jeans and a hoody top. Great street clothing! A skirt and a purple top. You look so glamorous. You dont look like you at all. You look good in this skater gear, Justin. Yeah, I quite like the purple shirt, too. What do you think of the vintage clothes, Anna? I love them. I feel so much more confident about wearing pretty and colourful clothes. Its good to try something new from time to time. Do you think you will change the way you dress in the future? Definitely, I cant wait to buy some new clothes. Justin, how do you feel about changing your style? Great. I still like black, though.

5 Food
Jason Jeanette Jason Jeanette Jason Jeanette Jason Jeanette Jason Dinner with the family is very important for many people. This is Jeanettes house. Her family are American, but they live here in England. Jeanette and her mother are preparing the food for tonights meal. So what are you cooking tonight? Well, its my turn to cook dinner with Mom. Were going to have baked salmon, vegetables, and boiled potatoes. I love vegetables, which ones are you using? Im going to steam some broccoli, carrots, and beans. I also want to roast some mushrooms and red peppers. Sounds great. What about dessert? For dessert were going to have pancakes. Theyre my favourite. Theyre also American. My moms gonna start on the salmon while I make the pancakes. Jeanette says that pancakes are easy to make, and theyre delicious. First, take four ounces of flour. Make a hole in the centre of the flour. Add two eggs, some milk, a tiny bit of salt. Now, mix the ingredients. Put a little oil in a frying pan. I always have maple syrup with my pancakes. In the UK people eat less meat now than in the past. Jeanette is vegetarian and doesnt eat meat any more. But the rest of her family do. But we dont eat healthy food all of the time. Fast food is tasty, cheap, and easy. In the USA and the UK burger bars, pizza places and fried chicken restaurants are great for people who want food on the move. Fish and chip shops are still very popular in the UK, and there are still many small cafs which serve a traditional English breakfast all day, that is bacon and eggs, sausages, baked beans, and fried bread. The American version of the English caf is the diner. Isnt it, Jeanette? It sure is. I miss those huge meals. They serve similar types of food, but the main difference is the amount of food that you get. In American diners the food portions are generally much bigger than in the UK. There are also many places serving fresh and healthy fast food. Here you get a really big sandwich full of good things. Great for lunch, what do you have for lunch Jeanette? I normally have a sandwich at about one oclock. But your main meal is in the evening. Yes, at around eight oclock. What do other people eat, and when do they eat it? My favourite breakfast is chocolate croissant. For breakfast I usually have a glass of orange juice and some toast.

Alex Sarah Brenna Jon Mike Kelly Lizzie Alison Josh Yvette Jason For breakfast I either have a bowl of cereal with orange juice, or I have a breakfast milkshake. I usually eat breakfast at about half past seven. Generally for breakfast I eat a bagel or toast or cereal. Something like that. I dont eat breakfast because I dont like breakfast foods. I normally eat a sandwich for lunch, maybe chicken. For lunch I have a cheeseburger and a soda. I normally eat lunch at about 1 p.m. My favourite dinner is when I make spaghetti. I normally eat dinner around six oclock or seven oclock in the evening. I like shepherds pie for dinner. In the UK, restaurants which serve food from places like India, China and Thailand are very popular. But the most popular restaurant food in the UK, especially with teenagers, is an Indian curry. There are more Indian restaurants in London than there are in New Delhi in India. Do you always cook a big meal in the evenings? Well, sometimes we just have snacks in front of the TV. Theyre easy, you can put them in the oven or a microwave. How long will the food be? Its ready, lets sit down. Mm, that looks delicious. Mm, the salmons perfect. I love the vegetables, especially the roast peppers. Well done, everyone, Id say its a complete success. Now, whos doing the dishes? You are.

Jessica Jennifer Jessica Jennifer Jessica Jennifer Jessica Jennifer Jessica Jennifer Jessica Sure. Time for lunch. We can buy something in the cafeteria, and you could tell me more about British schools. So, this is your school. Do you all wear uniforms in Britain? Well, it all depends on the school. A lot of students wear them. Dont you wear uniforms at all here? Private schools do, but there arent many of those. Kids dont wear uniforms in public schools. And are all schools in Britain for both boys and girls? Most are, but not all. Some people say the best exam results come from single sex schools. But I prefer mixed. Me too. What about exams in the USA? We take them all at the end of every semester. We take ten national exams. Ive just finished mine. Lets see a few more classes before we leave. So, now youve seen what I do here all day, can I come to your school next? Of course you can. Lets go and plan the trip now.

8 People and places

Lizzie Hi, today Im here to meet my friend Joe at this internet caf. Hes American, but he lives here now in the UK. Were going to do an internet quiz which I saw advertised on the TV. It has questions about famous places and people in the UK and the USA. Lets hope we can answer them. Hi Joe. Hi. I bought you a drink. Okay, its all set up. Shall we log on and get the first question? Ready when you are. Okay, lets go. Heres the first question. What is this place called? Thats easy, its the Grand Canyon in the USA. Yeah, its in northern Arizona in fact. And in southern Utah. Which river runs along the canyon? Thats the Colorado River. Oh, heres another question, quick. Who lives here? Thats easy, its Buckingham Palace. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh live there. Theres the next question. Who is this footballer? Do you know that? Its David Beckham, of course. Youll have to keep up with your football, Joe, now that you live here. Im enjoying this. Weve got all the answers right so far. Oh its The Statue of Liberty. But the question is Who gave the Statue of Liberty to the American people? I know that. I thought the statue was American. No, the people of France gave it to the people of America after the American Revolution. The date of American Independence Day is on the tablet in her hand. July 4th 1776. Youre right. Look, weve got six points, great! Next question. Thats Stonehenge. Its prehistoric. It was built about 4000 years ago. People think it was a sacred site. Is that the right answer? Yes and where is it, is the next question. Its on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, in England. Correct. Good! More points! Next question is Isnt that Shakespeare? Thats right, it is Shakespeare. And He lived in Stratford-upon-Avon. Everyone knows that. Ive been there with my parents. All the tourists go there. Can we pause it? Yeah sure. There. Do you need a break? Just for a minute, its very fast and the next round is even faster. Okay, go! Name two of these men. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Quick, hit The Presidents Palace button. Oh no! Which is older, Oxford University or Cambridge University? I dont know. Oh let me try Oxford. Yes! How many centuries has it been a centre of learning? Five, six, seven, eight? Oh, I dont know. I know its very old. Im going to guess six. Oh no, it says eight. Whats this? Put all these facts together and say what the place is. Okay. Its the Empire State Building, I think. Yes! The last question is this building has a Chinese style interior. What is it, and where is it? The Taj Mahal, Agra, India; The Royal Pavilion, Brighton, England; The Winter Palace, St Petersburg, Russia. Oh, I know. Its the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, England. Its incredible inside. Youll have to come and see it with me. Youre right, brilliant!

9 Holidays
Mike Hi. Today, Im at Middlesex County Camp in Connecticut, USA. There are thousands of summer camps in the USA, and each one is different. Every year young Americans come to camps like this to learn new skills, to improve old ones, to make new friends and have fun. There are hundreds of different activities and many different types of summer camps in the USA. At this camp in Connecticut, kids can make their own schedule from many different activities. Lets hear from some of the people who go to this camp. I come to summer camp cos I make the best friends here, and its completely different from anything I would be doing at home. Its a whole different world. Its a way to meet people, and Ive always liked meeting people. So, thats why I come to summer camp. The best thing about summer camp is that you bond with people like your fellow peers and counsellors that you meet. And you stay with them for a week or more, and by that time youre really close almost like family. The best thing about American summer camps would be that you get to meet lots of people from around the United States, around the world and you get to leave home for a while and experience new things in a different place and you get to do a lot of fun activities. For most people their best time is when everyone sits around the camp fire and relaxes. But you do need to know how to light a camp fire first. But apart from camps, where do American families go on vacation? Well, most Americans take their vacation in the USA. The most popular destination is California, with sun, surf, fantastic beaches, and beautiful people. The next favourite vacation spot in the USA is Florida. Its got wonderful weather, theme parks, great shopping, and alligators. Thats right, the Everglades area of Florida is a famous alligator reserve. Of course, millions of Americans also go abroad each year. Some go to Mexico, others go to Canada. Niagara Falls is a very famous tourist attraction. Many also go to Europe. No, this isnt California. Its Cornwall in the south west of England. Cornwall is the surfing capital of England and a very popular holiday destination. Thousands of British people come here to Cornwall for their annual holiday. As you can see, the surf is good and the scenery is spectacular. Some of the countryside is still quite wild, and there are caves and secret bays all along the coastline. These pretty villages were once the centre of a major fishing industry in Cornwall. But now tourism is the biggest industry in this area. During the summer, tourists fill the many local bed and breakfast hotels. There are also camp sites, caravan parks and youth hostels. Many young people come here to Cornwall for the great surfing, in places like Fistral Beach in Newquay. More people now surf in Britain than ever before. Theres a nine-day surfing festival on Fistral Beach every year. There are many shops selling surfing equipment in the town. These surf shops sell everything the surfer needs. Surfing clothes are very fashionable. Brighton on the south coast of England is another favourite holiday resort. Theres so much to do and see in this lively seaside town. At the end of the pier there are cafs, theatres, and a fairground. Brighton Pavilion is another famous landmark. It is almost 200 years old. Holidays in the UK can also be active. There are plenty of places to walk or go horse riding. The Lake District in the north west of England is particularly beautiful. The hills and valleys of Scotland are dramatic and wild. Or theres Blackpool, famous for its amazing street lights and huge fairgrounds. Thousands of young people go to Blackpool every year. In the last few years more British people have been going abroad. Now almost half the population take their holidays outside the UK. So although many British people go abroad for their holidays, most Americans stay in the USA for theirs. And why not? Theyve got the sun in Florida and California, great music festivals in New Orleans, the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the excitement of New York. What more could you want? Well personally, I prefer the open spaces. Hello is that the travel agent? Id like to book a holiday in the USA please. Yes, this summer, August. Id like to go to the Grand Canyon.

Yeah its going really well. How long have you been together? Me and Matt are brothers, and weve been recording for around four years. Jamie, do you write your own songs? Yes, I do. I started listening to other bands, and this really inspired me to write my own material. Do you write the music first and then the lyrics, or the other way around? It depends. Sometimes I get a tune in my head, and sometimes I get the lyrics and fit the music around it. Thanks, Ill let you get back to your rehearsal. And you strive to be someone else. In a while youre gonna lose yourself. And I swear Ill make no sound. When your surroundings all come crashing down. Im going to leave Drip Feed to finish their rehearsal, and go to meet a very different kind of band. Rap is one of the most popular types of music in the UK and USA today. Today Im going to meet some young rappers who specialise in free style rapping. Lets go and find out some more about them. What exactly is free style rapping? Sarah Yvette Rory Bolanle Josh Bolanle Sarah Lizzie I have two favourite pieces of technology. My computer and my CD player. My favourite piece of technology is my mobile phone. My favourite piece of technology is my e-Reader. My favourite piece of technology is the TV. The best thing thats ever been invented is probably the wheel. The best thing ever invented has to be the clock. The best thing ever invented was twenty-four hour music television. Hi, machines are a really important part of our lives today. In tomorrows world theyll be even more important. What sort of things will machines be able to do in the future? Im here today to meet someone who can help us to answer that question. His names Professor Kevin Warwick who works with robots in the Cybernetics Department at Reading University in England. Thanks for talking to us today, Professor. Can you tell us what sort of things youre working on at the moment? Well, one of the things were working on at the moment is this small transmitter. When its put inside a person we can see where that person goes. Here you can see someone moving around the university, theres a small transmitter under the skin of their arm. Its easy for us to follow them wherever they go. No, I wouldnt put a transmitter under my skin. No, I would not put a transmitter in my arm. I think it would be quite useful for parents to keep track of their kids. It might be used to track where criminals are. I think a really good use for this technology would be for famous people, tracking them down to see where they are. Ive heard youve got a robot hand here. Can you show that to us? Some time ago I did an experiment. I put a chip in my arm. I then used this to connect my arm to the robot hand. And as I moved my hand the robot hand moved in the same way. Wow so this could be used with a very large robot arm, for example. Thats right. One person could move their arm and the robot could lift a huge weight.

Professor Warwick Josh Sarah Helen Yvette Bolanle

Lizzie Professor Warwick Lizzie Professor Warwick Lizzie Do you have to be next to the robots hand? Professor No, we tried the experiment over a very long distance. I went to the USA and we sent the Warwick signals back over the internet. So, as I moved my hand the robot hand moved back here, in Reading. Sarah Could use it for experiments in space, or anywhere where it was difficult to get to.

69

Sebastian If you wanted to move very small things, because the human hand can make very small movements, the robot hand could do the same. Yvette A robot hand could be used for dangerous work or lifting heavy machinery. Josh You could use the robot hand to go places you couldnt go like an earthquake or a disaster. Lizzie When you invent something, do you always know how itll be used in the future? Professor No, not always. Sometimes people invent something and they dont really know what to do Warwick with it at first. It took quite a long time before people realised the importance of the telephone, for example. But today we cant imagine living without one. Josh Id like to see something invented that could transport people from one place to another instantaneously. Karen Id like something that tidied my room. Sebastian Something that did my homework. Hannah Id like a fridge that automatically ordered food from the supermarket. Sarah I would like to see the invention of flying cars. Bolanle I would like to see a time machine that could take me into the future. Lizzie What great inventions would you like to see? If you could invent something yourself, what would it be?
