"The ELS Center in Garden City is a nice place not only for studying English but also for learning different cultures. I made a lot of friends who came from different countries such as Turkey, Poland, and so on. Studying at ELS, experiencing multiple cultures can help you understand America better. After I graduate I plan to go to Adelphi University to study Human Resources. My major requires high communication skills with different people who may come from different countries. ELS is the perfect stepping-stone to education in the USA." Li, China ELS Student Future Adelphi University Student

NT ELS WORKS.

"When I was 17, I decided to do my overseas study through ELS. I couldnt speak English well at the time. The ELS class on campus had students from about 20 countries, speaking about 15 different languages. The ELS teachers were very experienced in teaching these kinds of students. By the end of the day, Id be looking forward to going back the next day. After nine months, I received my certificate from ELS. I think I matured a lot through my experience at ELS and university. At university, when I see my former ELS classmates working hard and trying to achieve something big and pursue their dreams, it makes me want to work hard too. I feel grateful for these important friendships; they give me a lot of motivation. Im majoring in biomedical engineering right now. Im planning to take a year off to do an internship to gain experience working in a company and then apply for graduate school. I want to learn more about the medical field and then go and help people in my home country." Ali, Yemen ELS Graduate Current California Lutheran University Student

"In 1976 I myself was a student at ELS in Oakland, California, and since then, the English language has become an important part of my daily life, helping me a lot in my duties as a doctor. That is why when my kids Carlos and Ana Grecia were the right age to leave Mexico in order to learn English, I did not hesitate to send them to ELS because I knew the quality and the prestige of your school. My wife and I are happy to have left in your hands the English learning of our youngsters. You did a very good job because they both speak and write the language very well, and it is helping them in their professional careers. Please receive our appreciation!" Dr. Arriola, Mexico Former ELS Student Parent of Current ELS Students

"Ive sent my kids through ELS English programs for several years. Its not only a language experience but also a lifetime experience. They get to learn from cultures of the world and make friends for a lifetime. All admission paths are taken care of, and that is a great help for a busy parent." Catherine, Martinique Parent of ELS Students "It was not hard for me to apply to community college, because ELS helped me prepare all the documents. It did not take me long to get used to it because I knew what I should do to succeed from my ELS experience. In ELS, I met the best teacher I ever had. I was having a difficult time writing my personal statements for my application to UC Berkeley, but I asked her for help and she advised me whenever I had problems. I think I would not have gotten into UC Berkeley without her help. Another advantage of the ELS 2+2 community college system is that you save money if you go to community college and then transfer." Gim, Korea ELS Graduate and Former Community College Student Current UC Berkeley Student

"There are no words to express all my gratitude to all the teachers and staff at ELS. When I arrived to the USA, I could barely connect two sentences in English. Now, I am confident about my skills and Im able to express myself in ways that Im truly proud of. All the teachers and staff were ALWAYS supporting me in my learning process. Day by day, I received all that I needed to succeed. Now my doctoral studies are awaiting me at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and I cant wait to put into practice all that Ive learned." Juan, Colombia ELS Graduate Current University of California at Santa Cruz Student

"Before I came to ELS, I had a problem, which was a lack of self-confidence. All teachers and ELS staff have always assisted me to express myself and to improve my English since my first day. They are also smiling at all the students all the time. Thanks to their help and my effort, day by day I overcame all my problems. In addition, every month ELS Berkeley prepares a schedule of activities. I participated in most of them, and they were very fun and helpful to make conversation with people. If I had a chance to choose a language school, I would choose ELS again." Celal, Turkey ELS Student "I was interested in pharmacoepidemiology. So I created a plan to meet the English requirement for admission by laying out how I would attend ELS on campus and prepare for the GRE. They said yes to admitting me conditionally. ELS helped me a lot. ELS was not just for English, it was for everything. It was the best time of my life." Ziyad, Saudi Arabia ELS Graduate Current University of Cincinnati Student

"I definitely made a right decision when attending ELS school. At school, I learned not only English but also American Culture. Both of them are very important to anyone who wants to study in America. ELS teachers who are friendly to students have helped me a lot even though I graduated. Personally, I love the English Master program so much, although at first I felt worried about my English just a little bit learning in the Master class. Shortly after that, I enjoyed studying with the program because it pushed me both to speak and write a lot. Not only that, I completed a research paper with 10 pages, which helped me get used to MBA classes in the university. I am now studying in Louisiana Tech and do well in my classes." Hoai, Vietnam ELS Graduate Current Louisiana Tech Student

WELCOME TO OUR CENTERS!

Your ELS Center is so much more than a place to learn English. From the moment you arrive you become integrated into student life on campus, making it easy to meet and make friends with American and other international students and become actively engaged in the many activities available to you. Your ELS Center staff also helps you adjust to life in the USA, exposing you to American culture both in and outside the classroom. Whether you choose to live alongside university students on campus or in homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family, your ELS Center becomes your home and your fellow students and Center staff your family. Daily life at your ELS Center not only provides you with a great opportunity to practice English with other students from around the world but also helps you develop a sense of independence and self-confidence. I work intensively with students on their critical thinking, questioning, reading, writing and presentation skills, preparing them for research writing at the university level. It has been my joy and privilege to travel with them on their journey and to reconnect with them once they are in college. It is gratifying that they fondly recall being in my class because it helped prepare them to be successful in their undergraduate or graduate writing. Brenda Ellingboe Senior Instructor, ELS/St. Paul Center

Because every student has his or her own needs and preferences, we offer a variety of living accommodations to ensure that you are comfortable, safe and feel at home, regardless of the type of housing you select.

STUDENT RESIDENCE
Most ELS locations on university campuses offer living accommodations either on campus or near the ELS Center, making it easy for you to interact with other students and truly experience campus life. Living in a residence hall and eating your meals with other students in the dining facility will provide you with endless opportunities to practice your growing English skills with students like yourself. Student residence life also allows for many eye-opening experiences; you will find you have much in common with your new international friends as you share your individual cultural customs and points of view.

APARTMENT HOUSING
If you prefer a more independent lifestyle, you may want to live in an apartment near your ELS Center. Apartment costs and conditions vary widely depending on the location. Some ELS locations have special relationships with local apartment providers that welcome ELS students, families, married couples or executive clients. Many ELS Centers can advise you on finding a furnished apartment to suit your preference and budget. Your local ELS Counselor can provide you with detailed information on housing options.

HOMESTAYS
All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully selected to ensure that they provide a pleasant and safe home away from home for their student guests. Some students find that living with a host family can help them learn English faster, while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand.
