Moving to a new country to study is both exciting and frightening. We are here to help you. The International Student Guide is designed to help new students learn about the TriCity (Gdask, Sopot, Gdynia). Daily life in Poland may be different from what you are accustomed to. But we hope we can help you avoid some of the frustrations and problemsof life in a new country. To do this, we got help from local students and interviewed past international students. The aim of this guide is to provide information and tools for international students to learn about their new home. Over the next 20 pages, you will find some of the most important information about the TriCity.

The Fountain of Neptune (Fontanna Neptuna)

Map of the University of Gdansk Baltic campus

This sculpture of Neptune, the god of seas, is located outside the entrance to Arthurs Court. It was cast in bronze in 1615 by Peter Hausen according to a design by Gredt Benning. It was unveiled in 1633. Neptunes head resembles the head of Marcus Aurelius from a famous equestrian statue, while the torso is said to be like the Belvedere Torso in Rome. The Fountain of Neptune is one of the very few ancient monuments left in Gdansk. Karol Stender rebuilt the base of the fountain in 1762, changing its style to rococo. It was damaged during World War II, but was restored in 1954.

Its name is derived from the legend of King Arthur, the symbol of chivalry and courage. The Court was in its prime in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but the history of the court dates back to 1476. The interior included one spacious Gothic hall decorated with tapestry, ship models, suits of armour, shields with coats of arms, and marvellous paintings. A detail that always attracted visitors attention was an eleven-meter high tile stove, built in the sixteenth century, and covered with 520 tiles presenting portraits of some of the most prominent European sovereigns, such as Charles V and Isabel of Portugal. Arthurs Court served as an exclusive meeting place for Gdask high society. In 1742, at the request of local merchants, the City Council agreed to turn the Court into a market. The court was severely damaged during World War II and afterwards restored.

A copy of Hans Memlings famous triptych of the last Judgement is kept in this church, while the original is in the National Museum in Gdask. The monument in the form of three crosses with anchors was unveiled on 16 December 1980, on the tenth anniversary of the December 1970 events that took place in Solidarno square in Gdask. It was erected as part of the demands of striking shipyard workers. The monument is located close to the place where the first three shipyard workers were killed in 1970. Each cross (weighing 42 tonnes, not counting the 2 tonnes of the anchor) is 42 meters high. An extract of Czesaw Miosz s poem The one you harmed is also placed on the monument.

Here we want to present everything thats relevant when youre looking for a flat or an apartment in Gdask, Sopot, or Gdynia. Generally, renting a flat in Poland is difficult if you dont speak Polish. You cant take it for granted that the flat owner will know English. Whats more, most advertisements are in Polish. But if you familiarize yourself with how to go about renting a flat, we believe that even lack of language will not be a huge barrier.

Currently, this is the best method of looking for soemwhere to live. There are many websites which are dedicated to advertisements for rental flats. The real estate section allows you to search for flats according to different criteria: price type of apartment (studio flat, two-bedroom flat etc.) size of living area place (city, province, district) Before you start searching try to think about what you need. Precise your expectations and requirements clearly.

In Poland, this is still a very common way of looking for somewhere to live. Local newspapers are a really good source of information when looking for an apartment on your own. It is worth knowing that once a week the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza has a housing supplement. Whats more, each Wednesday in newspaper kiosks you can buy Anonse, a magazine which is full of local real estate ads (Gdask, Sopot, Gdynia).

Real estate agencies

* It is very important for you to remember your student card while using public transport. Discounts are only working with it

Finding a flat with the help of real estate agencies has a lot of advantages. First of all, they will monitor the real estate market to find you what you want. Secondly, they will send you offers by e-mail, and arrange meetings with owners of flats youre interested in. And whats most important, they will make sure that the contractual part of the rental agreement

Nowadays, lots of apartments are rented through acquaintances. It is good to ask friends, your employer, and other people you meet whether they know someone who is looking for a tenant.

Prices

Basically, price depends on location (local amenities, transportation facilities), number of bedrooms, appliances, and standard of accommodation. Most flats in Gdask, Sopot, and Gdynia are furnished: kitchens are fully-fitted with fridge, oven and dishwasher.

POLISH CUISINE
DUMPLINGS (PIEROGI)
Ingredients: 2 cups of flour, plus extra amount for dough kneading 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1 large egg 1/2 cup of sour cream, plus extra amount to accompany pierogi at serving 1/4 slab of butter, softened and cut into small pieces additional butter and onion for sauteing ingredients for stuffing of your choice (potato & cheese filling - recipe below) Dumplings Dough To prepare the dough, mix together flour and salt. Next beat an egg and add it immediately to the flour mixture. Afterwards add 1/2 cup of sour cream and softened butter pieces. Knead the dough you have made until it loses most of its stickiness (about 5-7 minutes). You can use a food processor with a dough hook for this, although be careful not to overbeat. Wrap the dough in plastic wrapping and refrigerate for 20-30 minutes minimum; the dough can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Each batch of dough makes roughly 12-15 dumplings (depending on their size). Prepare the dumplings Roll the dumpling dough on a floured board surface or countertop until 1/8 thick. Cut circles in dough with a cookie cutter or drinking glass. Place a small load of filling (about a tablespoon) on each dough round and fold it over, forming a semi-circle. Press the edges together with the tines of a fork. Boil a few dumplings at one time in a large pot of water. They are done when they float to the top (about 8-10 minutes). Rinse with cool water and drain them in a collander. Stir chopped onion on butter in a large pan until it becomes soft. Then add dumplings and pan fry until lightly crispy. You can fill dumplings with pretty much anything you want, though potato and cheese are the most common fillings. Sweet dumplings are often filled with a prune mixture. Potato, Cheese & Onion Filling: Peel and boil 5 large potatoes until soft. While the potatoes are boiling, finely chop 1 large onion and saute it in butter until soft and translucent. Mash the potatoes with the sauted onions and 4-8oz of grated cheddar cheese, adding salt and pepper to taste. You can also add some fresh parsley, bacon bits, chives, or other enhancements if you desire. Let the potato mixture cool and then form into 1 balls.
