Samsung is working on Google TVbased products that run on its own processors, Bloomberg reported yesterday, citing unnamed sources. The news service's sources said that Google first required Samsung to use Intel chips but later relented after the electronics maker balked at delivering a device running on another company's processor. The fact that Samsung is possibly working on Google TV-based devices that run on its own chips is important. So far, all Google TV products have used Intel processors. However, recent rumblings have suggested that ARM is in talks with Google to allow device makers to use its chips as well. Samsung's processors are ARM-based.

3DTV Samsung Electronics said Thursday it expects to sell up to 10 million 3-D TVs this year and vigorously defended the technology behind its lineup amid intensifying competition with rivals including LG Electronics. Samsung's 3-D sales target, if achieved, would mark a fivefold jump from the 2 million sets sold last year. LG says it expects to sell 5 million 3-D TVs in 2011, though is not releasing its results for last year.

Emerging Market India & B2B marketing The South Korean consumer electronics major Samsung aims to double its market share in India to five per cent over the next five years, and has set a turnover target of $10 billion by 2015. SmartPhones According to new numbers released by IDC, Android has turned out be a market winner for HTC, as well as for Samsung. The two companies account for nearly 15% of the smartphone market share in 2010 as a whole, for the most part thanks to their respective Android smartphones. Soon, the two companies may hold 20% of the market share, as Q4 2010 shipping numbers reveals a very positive trend for both. Samsung said the company aimed to sell more than 300 million cellphones this year, while sales of its smartphones are expected to rise to 60 million from 25 million last year. Samsung will not be following LG to market with a 3D capable smartphone any time soon. LG unveiled the firstever 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this week. week. Displays using quantum dots, a form of semiconductor, are seen as the next generation of display technology that will improve brightness, visibility and power efficiency of organic lightemitting display (OLED) materials found in electronic gadgets. New Business Areas Biopharmaceuticals Samsung said it will form a joint venture with a U.S. drug testing company in its first significant project in biopharmaceuticals -- a sector the South Korean conglomerate is targeting for growth. Samsung said in a release Friday that three of its group companies are partnering with clinical research company Quintiles Transnational Corp. in a venture with capital of 300 billion won ($266 million). The Samsung companies, which include conglomerate flagship Samsung Electronics Co., will own 90 percent of the venture. Durham, North Carolina-based Quintiles, a contract research organization that tests drugs for pharmaceutical companies, will take 10 percent. Samsung said initial plans are for a factory to be constructed in Incheon, a major port city west of Seoul, to produce biopharmaceutical drugs to treat cancer and arthritis. Biopharmaceuticals are made by using living organisms such as cells and bacteria. Traditional drugs are typically produced from inert chemicals. Construction of the factory will begin during the first half of this year, Samsung said. Production is expected to commence in the first half of 2013. The drugs will be produced on a contract manufacturing basis for other pharmaceutical companies, though Samsung said that it plans to eventually develop new biopharmaceuticals. Samsung, a diverse conglomerate consisting of dozens of businesses with interests in electronics, shipbuilding, finance, leisure and other areas, announced an aggressive plan in May of last year to invest 23.3 trillion won in new

businesses over 10 years, targeting solar cells, rechargeable cells for hybrid electric vehicles, LED technologies, biopharmaceuticals and medical devices. The conglomerate said at the time that it would invest 2.1 trillion won in biopharmaceuticals. "Today's announcement signals the first major step of these plans," Samsung said Friday. Cross Patent Agreement IBM and Samsung have decided to embrace each other, even more, in their respective bosoms, putting an end to patent disputes at least between the two, by licensing their portfolios crosscompany.

LG 3DTV & Connected TV South Korea's LG Electronics Inc , the world's No.2 TV manufacturer, said on Wednesday that it aims to sell 5 million 3D televisions in 2011, as it seeks to return to profit with fatter-margin products. LG aims to sell 5 million 3D sets this year in a market estimated at around 14 million sets, and control 20 percent of the global market for smart TVs. LG aims to sell 40 million units of flatscreen TVs in 2011, the electronics makers parent company said Dec. 28, without providing a figure for last year. Samsung, the worlds top TV maker, previously said its targeting sales of 45 million flat-panel TVs this year. LG's Internet-connected TVs will soon be displaying content from Brightcove, a popular online video platform for businesses and news agencies. Brightcove Inc., which has more than 2,700 customers in 50 countries, will roll out a software development kit later this year that will enable it users to build video-playing apps for LG's NetCast software. The phone, which LG calls its most advanced to date, will come with a dual-lens camera for 3D recording and an LCD panel for glasses-free 3D viewing. Phone owners will be able to let others view the content using HDMI or DLNA to connect to an external screen or other device, LG said in a brief statement. LG aims to sell 150 million phones, including 30 million smartphones this year, said Dr. Jong-Seok Park, the president and chief executive of LG Mobile Communications, in an interview. LGs 30 million smartphones target represents more than four times the number of smartphones the company shipped in 2010. LG would launch 20 smartphone models, as it seeks to turn its loss-making mobile division profitable.LG also wants to sell one million units of its new tablet, the Optimus Pad, though Park declined to specify a timeframe for that sales goal. LG announced that it is demonstrating the world's first voice over LTE (VoLTE) and video over LTE calls at the Mobile World Congress event on its LG Revolution Android powered smartphone. LG will be demonstrating support for the GSMA's "One Voice" protocol, which LG expects to be widely adopted.

designed for mobile devices with large screens. Mobile Payment European consumers may finally be able to pay for items via their smartphones next year, through a system under development by LG Electronics. LG's system would use a combination of near-field communication (NFC) and cloud computing to allow certain retailers in Europe to accept payments from customers using NFC-equipped smartphones. Scheduled to launch sometime in 2012, the system would also find its way into interactive TVs and security products sold by LG, Reuters reported this week. The move by LG follows a plan just announced by T-Mobile to launch an NFC-based payment system in the U.K. Working with telecom provider Orange and financial firm Barclaycard, T-Mobile plans to debut its system in early summer.

Patent issues LG Electronics is seeking to block imports of the Sony PlayStation 3, according to a report. Bloomberg reported Tuesday that LG has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission to block imports of the PlayStation 3 as well as certain Sony Bravia televisions.

Sony LCD TV Business Japan's Sony Corp posted a 5.9 percent fall in third-quarter profit on Thursday as a price war hit its TV unit and a stronger yen weighed, and lowered its revenue forecast on slower-thanexpected TV sales. Sony reported an operating profit of 137.52 billion yen ($1.68 billion) versus 146.1 billion yen in the same period a year earlier, beating an average quarterly estimate of 127 billion yen in a poll of eight analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Sony, which makes Bravia TVs, cut its forecast for TV sales in the full year to March 31 to 23 million units, down from its previous forecast of 25 million. Sony said sales for the quarter fell 1.4 percent, to 2.21 trillion yen, primarily because of a strong yen, which erodes the value of overseas earnings in the home currency. The company lowered its full-year revenue forecast to 7.2 trillion yen, from 7.4 trillion yen. Sony Corp aims to boost flat TV sales in the next business year from April and will vary its procurement of LCD panels to help lower costs and turn its struggling TV operations profitable, a top executive said. Last week Sony cut its flat TV sales forecast for the year to

March by 2 million sets to 23 million, hit by weaker-than-expected demand during the holiday shopping season and a delay in the launch of new models. Samsung aims to sell 45 million units and LG 41 million in 2011. The global LCD TV market is set to grow slightly more than 10 percent by units in 2011, a much slower pace than in recent years, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Developing markets are expected to grow by 28 percent, while unit sales are expected to fall slightly in developed markets. The maker of Bravia TVs and PlayStation game consoles has been bleeding red ink from its TV division for six years and says it will make a loss again in the year to March, hit by the strong yen, higher than expected panel costs and price competition. Falls in TV prices also affected profits at rivals Panasonic and LG announced in recent weeks. Sony will vary the proportion of liquidcrystal display panels it buys from its three existing sources: its joint venture with Sharp, its venture with Samsung and from the open market, as a way to meet market needs and cut costs, Kato said. "We are not going to change this structure, but what we will change is the proportion from each," Kato said. "We have to adjust to market needs." A greater focus on emerging markets could mean increased sales of smaller TVs. That could cut into procurement from Sharp, which is strong in large panels popular in the developed countries where unit growth is not expected this year. Sony last week announced a 6 percent drop in operating profit for the October-December period compared with the previous year, but beat market expectations and kept its full-year profit outlook unchanged at 200 billion yen ($2.43 billion). According to U.S. research institute DisplaySearch, Sony's share of the flatscreen TV market went up 2.4 points in the October-December period from the previous quarter to 14.2 per cent. The

firm reported brisk sales in India and other emerging economies, and was behind industry leader Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea, which held a 21.4 per cent share. However, Japanese makers have suffered recently from slow growth in China, which became the largest flat-screen market in 2010, with 39 million units shipped compared to North America's 37.4 million. Chinese makers have proved highly competitive on their home turf, with extensive sales networks that reach far into the inland regions and significantly improved technology. In the October-December quarter of 2010, Chinese manufacturers gobbled up 78 per cent of total flatpanel TV sales in the country, whereas Sharp Corp.--top among Japanese makers--only managed to secure 5.1 per cent. Foxconn & Sony TV Investment Taiwan's Foxconn Group, manufacturer of the Apple iPhone and iPad, and Sony will establish a joint-venture liquidcrystal-display (LCD) TV plant with an annual production capacity of 30 million units and workforce of 50,000 staff initially, making it the largest such facility around the world, in Yantai City, Shandong Province in northern China, according to a report by the Chinabased National Business Daily. The city government has confirmed the news that Foxconn is proposing an expansion of its LCD television production site, but it still needs the approval of top client Sony Corp.

10,000 individual tracks and 1000 hours of content from all music genres. 3DTV A new 3-D television network from Discovery Communications <DISCA.O>, Sony Corp <6758.T> and Imax Corp <IMX.TO> will launch Sunday on satellite TV provider DirecTV <DTV.O>. The network, called 3net, will go live at 8:00 pm Eastern time to more than 18 million homes in the United States. It is the network's first distribution deal.

Smartphones LCD Japanese electronics giant Sony said Wednesday it will buy a Chinese subsidiary of Seiko Epson that makes liquid crystal displays as it looks to meet demand for devices such as smartphones. Sony said it will buy the firm for 775 million yuan ($118 million), as it looks to produce displays without having to outsource the process so it retains control over the production chain. Seiko Epson, a printer and components maker based in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, plans to sell its Chinese unit, Suzhou Epson, to Sony by the end of this September, the two firms said in a statement.

Emerging Market India Sony India on Tuesday said it wants to beef up its share in the flat panel TV market to 40 percent within January March by cashing in on the upcoming cricket World Cup season. Sony is doing booming business in India, dominating in flat-panel TVs and digital cameras, and is in good shape to keep growing in coming years, a top executive said Friday. Sony's success in India where a new middle class is snatching up gadgets is a bright spot for the Japanese electronics maker that's getting beaten in North America by U.S. rival Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea. Corp. has No. 1 market share in flatpanel TVs in India at 34 percent and digital cameras at 40 percent, according to the maker of Bravia TVs and Cybershot cameras. Sony is also No. 1 in India in home theaters and camcorders. India's TV market is expected to grow to 4.5 million or 5 million units during the fiscal year through March 2012, up from nearly 3 million now. Sony is hoping to get about 35 percent of those sales, which would total 1.7 million TVs. AMOLED Sony will soon begin selling a professional monitor that contains the largest commercial organic lightemitting diode (OLED) screen yet produced.

base in Shanghai, this spring to expand sales by developing cutting-edge technologies for products geared to local market needs. The establishment of the new company is also aimed at conducting R&D in areas central to Sharps global business, as well as training of employees capable of helping Sharp meet its goals, according to the electric appliances production company. Energy Efficiency Eco-House Sharp Corp has developed an intelligent power conditioner that enables batteries in electric vehicles to be used as storage batteries for the home. Sharp will be conducting exhaustive tests to confirm the safety and reliability of this system, with the aim of making this device commercially available in the near future. Sharp has a goal to make its eco-house concept a reality. This next-generation house will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by conserving energy and reducing the amount of electrical power consumed in the home. Under this concept, Sharp is focusing on three themes: solar cells, storage batteries, and DC (directcurrent) appliances. With electric vehicles (EVs) expected to see widespread use in the coming years, this technology can make use of EV traction batteries as part of a residential power storage system. In proof-of-concept trials, Sharp succeeded in using a battery pack in a commercially available EV to supply 8 kW of power, which is enough to power electrical appliances in an average household. In addition, the charge controller in the conditioner was able to deliver 4 kWh of energy to recharge the electric vehicle battery pack in approximately 30 minutes. Sharp Corp has developed high-output, high-color-rendering 25W-class LED lighting devices that boast an industrys highest luminous efficacy of 91 lm/W for light sources such as store spotlights. Sharp LCD TV Business Sharp Corp. (6753.TO) said Thursday its net profit for the three months through December fell by 19% from a year earlier due mainly to a special loss related to restructuring, despite a boost in television sales in Japan. Sharp, which makes liquid crystal display panels as well as TVs and other consumer electronics, said its group net profit for the fiscal third quarter fell to Y7.4 billion from Y9.1 billion a year earlier. Operating profit rose 10% to Y23.0 billion from Y21.0 billion, while revenue rose 12% to Y824.5 billion from Y735.3 billion as TV sales in Japan surged due to a government subsidy program. For the full fiscal year through March, Sharp continues to forecast a net profit of Y30 billion, an operating profit of Y90 billion and revenue of Y3.1 trillion.

Toshiba LCD TV Business Toshiba aims to double the companys TV sales to 30 million units in the next three years, he said. Toshibas TV business will account for about 11 percent of the overall 6.6 trillion yen in sales this year, according to David Rubenstein, a Tokyo- based analyst at MF Global FXA Securities Ltd. Toshiba isnt betting its TV business entirely on the success of 3-D. The maker of Regza-brand sets is also launching cheaper, flat-screen models aimed at consumers in developing countries including China, India, and Russia. Toshiba plans to start production of TVs in India with a local partner this summer, Osumi said. Lower-end sets sold to customers in emerging markets will probably account for half of the TVs Toshiba sells by the year ending March 2014, up from about 15 percent now, he said. Japan's Toshiba Corp's quarterly profit more than doubled, driven by a boom in sales of NAND flash memory chips and liquid-crystal displays used in tablets and smartphones but it stuck with its full-year outlook. For the three months ending December 31, Toshiba posted operating profit of 37.5 billion yen profit, compared with 14.5 billion yen a year ago. In the quarter, electro nic devices, including LCDs and flash memory, generated 17.2 billion yen in operating income after a loss 6.6 billion yen a year earlier. Toshiba also benefited from better-than-expected sales of televisions, after the Japanese government offered consumers incentives to buy sets that consume less power, the head of Toshiba's TV unit said earlier this month.

Compal Labor Shortage ODM notebook makers Compal Electronics and Wistron both saw their January 2011 notebook shipments decline as compared to the previous month. In January, Compal shipped 3.3-3.4 million notebooks compared to 3.5 million units shipped in December, while Wistron shipped 2.25 million units, down from 2.6 million units shipped a month earlier. The two companies both projected earlier that their notebook shipments are likely to drop in a range from 0% to 5% sequentially in the first quarter of 2011. But industry sources now predict the decline may widen to 5-10% due to weaker-than-expected January performance. Compal also shipped 500,000 LCD TVs in January, down from 550,000 units shipped in December. The company aims to ship 1.8 million LCD TVs in the first quarter.

about 9 percent of industry revenue. For all of 2010, Samsung captured 22 percent of TV sales, followed by LG with 14 percent, Sony with 12 percent, Panasonic with 8.2 percent and Sharp with 7.1 percent. Taiwanese TV Manufacturers The contract manufacturing volume from Taiwan's TV SIs reached 10.84 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, up by 19.6% sequentially, a record high quarterly growth in 2010, according to WitsView. As brand vendors continue to strategically release more orders, Taiwan's TV SIs are also trying to further enhance their R&D and manufacturing capabilities to take full advantage of this trend. Linda Lin, research manager of WitsView indicated that the total shipments from Taiwan's TV SIs reached 35.12 million units in 2010, up by 47% on year. Looking into 2011, aside from securing the low to medium end LCD TV orders, she advises that Taiwan's TV SIs further enhance their system development and assembly capacity to take in more medium to high-end TV orders in order to drive their shipment growth to a new high. In addition, they should also aggressively tap the new emerging market segment to offset the expected forthcoming market slowdown in Japan, as the Eco-point subsidy program comes to a close.

CE Market LCD TV Market LCD TV Sales Television sales increased by 15 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter as manufacturers led by Samsung Electronics Co. slashed prices on new technologies to draw holiday shoppers. China Market More price-cut promotions are expected in China's TV market for new models scheduled to hit the market in March, as sales during the Lunar New Year holidays were lower-than-expected causing inventory pressure for vendors. LCD TV retail sales during the Lunar New Year holidays were about 3.3 million, while overall shipments from vendors were about 4.5-4.6 million units. Based on latest data, LCD TV sales during the Lunar New Year holiday reached 3.3 million. The sales reached the expected performance but were mainly driven by strong price-cut promotions by retailers, especially for LED-backlit models, which further helped to increase the share of LEDbacklit models to 30-40% of the total sales in the first-tier cities. According to forecasts by China-based All View Consulting (AVC), there will be 43.7 million color TVs sold in the China market in 2011, consisting of 38.2 million LCD TVs, 2.9 million PDP TVs and 2.6 million CRT TVs. Of the LCD TV sales, 40% will be of LED-backlit models, AVC noted. According to the regulations of China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television, analog television broadcast will be ceased in 2015. With the approach of schedule time, China's digital television transformation accelerates. And the number of China's cable DTV subscribers developed from 190,000 in 2003 to 61.99 million in 2009.

prices, which could eventually lead to an industry realignment. Some analysts have predicted the price of a 32-inch LCD panel will fall about 40 per cent from the 200 dollars range in the first half of 2010 to about 120 dollars in the first half of 2012. "All the LCD manufacturers will be in the red," said Yoshio Tamura, a senior analyst at DisplaySearch. While strong economic growth in emerging countries will continue to boost global TV sales, the value of these sales is expected to decline after peaking in 2010 at about 112.6 billion dollars, to hit about 103 billion dollars in 2014. Because TV sales is a core business for most Japanese electronics manufacturers, "No one is considering scrapping or downsizing their business" at this stage, said Sony's Kato. In November, Nikko Cordial Securities Inc. urged electronics manufacturers in a report to reorganize and even consider withdrawing from the TV business. It is widely believed in the electronics industry that yet another realignment will be needed for companies to survive, an industry insider said, and that the 2012 problem will possibly serve as a catalyst for this reorganization Plasma TV Shipments of plasma sets jumped nearly 30% worldwide last year, to 19.1 million from 14.8 million the year before, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Most TV manufacturers may have given up on plasma technology, but the public has not. Panasonic made about 41% of the plasma sets shipped in 2010, DisplaySearch said. Samsung was next with 34%, and LG had 23%. The share of plasma-TV shipments at 50 inches or larger hit 40.8% in 2010, up from 38% in 2009. Most plasma-TV makers have abandoned the 32-inch market because of low LCD prices at that size, DisplaySearch said.

Tablet PC The shipment of iPad approximated 14.79 million in 2010, and it is estimated to reach 37.60 million in 2011, a substantial growth of 1.54 folds from the previous year. So, over 80% tablet computer market this year will still be dominated by Apple iPad. Promisingly, the shipment of non-iPad tablet computers in 2011 will reach around 7 million, accounting for roughly 16% of the total tablet PC shipment. The rise of tablet computers has significantly seized the market shares from netbook whose sales dramatically shrank from 32.80 million in 2009 to 26.20 million in 2010 and will fall further in the future. Tablet PC shipments are going from strength to strength with a predicted year-on-year increase of nearly 200 percent to 55.7 million units expected in 2011. According to the DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report although growth rates will slow over the forecast period, the slate PC share of the overall mobile PC market will rise to nearly 35 percent or 172.4 million units, by 2014. Tablet shipments will increase by a factor of 12 by 2015, iSuppli said, and total shipments of tablets will amount to 242.3 million units in 2015. In 2010, a total of 19.7 million tablet devices shipped, the vast majority of them 17.4 million - 'media tablets', running lite operating systems such as iOS and Android. The PC opportunity cannot been downplayed, despite the recent tablet craze. In volume terms, mobile computers represented around 350 million units in 2010. Research firm Gartner forecasts that number will rise to 750 million units by 2015.

Energy PV Cell Electronics companies in Asia are taking over thephotovoltaic cell market, with Samsung and LG getting into the action, reports IMS Research. The analyst forecasts that Asia's share of PV cell production will reach nearly 85 percent by the end of 2011. Despite fears of a module oversupply, the two companies and other Taiwan and Korea suppliers have recently revealed expansion plans for their solar business segments. The analyst predicts an oversupply of PV modules in 2011 following the PV cell and module capacity increases undertaken in 2010 to meet the demand in major European markets, together with lower incentive rates and the slowing of installation growth. Small Tier 2 suppliers are predicted to be most affected, with larger Tier 1 suppliers still able to sell the majority of their products. Still, the long-term outlook is positive, and IMS Research sees total industry demand continuing to grow at double-digit rates on average for the next 4 years. IMS Research predicts that the most successful of the new entrants will be the CE manufacturers. The analyst highlights AUO Optronics, a Taiwan supplier most known for its FPDs, and which has broken ground on a 1.4GW cell production joint venture with SunPower. Also, Samsung has announced a joint-venture producing polysilicon with MEMC, further expanding its activities in the solar industry.
