There is a place where reason-
able men and women take time
each week to discuss and debate is-
sues that face our nation and coun-
tries around the world. No, certain-
ly not Congress. It is the South Jer-
sey Debate League.
The SJDL, established 40 years
ago, hosts as many as 40 high
school varsity and junior varsity
debates on Wednesday afternoons
from December through February
at high schools throughout the re-
gion. This year, students from
Burlington, Camden and Glouces-
ter counties competed each week
with the season concluding at East-
ern High School on Feb. 27 with a
championship debate and awards

The Tabernacle Athletic Asso-
ciation baseball program is ac-
cepting applications for its fourth
annual Sean Clegg Memorial Col-
lege Scholarship Fund.
Supported by a $500 matching
gift from Foley Mechanical, TAA
baseball provides an annual $1,000
college scholarship award to a par-
ticipant who meets all eligibility
criteria and best exemplifies and
reflects the memory of former
TAA baseball player Sean
Clegg.
Always respectful of his team-
mates, coaches and opponents,
Clegg played the game with
tremendous heart, dedication and
sportsmanship. He proudly repre-
sented the community of Taber-
nacle and all that is good from
participating in youth sports. Fol-
lowing his 2008 Babe Ruth season
and nine days shy of his 15th
birthday, Clegg was tragically
struck and killed by a car while
riding his bike. His parents, Andy
and Gail, courageously decided to
donate Cleggs organs to help oth-
ers in need. All six donor recipi-
ents received successful organ
transplants, including a young
woman who became the first per-
son to give birth to twins after a
heart transplant.
Applications will be accepted
until March 15. Members of the
Clegg family will join program of-
ficials in presenting the winner
with the scholarship award dur-
ing TAA Baseballs Opening Day
Ceremonies at Patty Bowker
fields. For more information,
visit www.taabaseball.org or con-
tact the guidance office at Seneca
High School.

The Tabernacle Township
Committee will look to approve
an increase in the townships 2014
budget at its next meeting on
Monday, March 10.
The state allows municipalities
to authorize a budget increase up
to 3.5 percent more than the pre-
vious years final appropriations
if it is done through ordinance.
At the committee meeting on
Feb. 24, an ordinance was present-
ed stating the township finds it
advisable and necessary to in-
crease its 2014 budget by up to 3.5
percent over the previous year in
the interest of promoting the
health, safety and welfare of the
citizens.
The committee has not yet
looked into how the taxes will be
affected.
Township administrator Doug
Cramer previously stated that the
townships engineering budget
would have to be increased this
year from 2013.
We have projects that have
carried over from last year that
will be completed this year. The
snack stand at Patty Bowker
Park, the Tuckerton Road proj-
ect, Cramer said.
Tabernacle and Shamong
Township have a joint service
agreement for the repaving of
Tuckerton Road and are awaiting
word on the status of a state De-
partment of Transportation
grant to finish the project. Once
that is complete, Cramer said the
township would then pursue im-
proving Medford Lakes Road as
its next project.
Residents will have the oppor-
tunity to comment on the ordi-
nance at the townships next
workshop meeting, which is
scheduled for March 10. Budget
discussions are an ongoing
process for the township but the
end is in sight.
The current schedule, which
can change depending on state
approval, is introducing the budg-
et by March 14 with a public hear-
ing and adoption by April 25,
Cramer said.
In other news:
The committee approved a
resolution that will extend the
quarterly tax payment grace peri-
od in case the final day of the
grace period falls on a holiday,
weekend or when the municipal
building is closed due to an emer-
gency. The grace period for pay-
ment of property taxes was estab-
lished as 10 days after the due date.
Now taxpayers have until the next
business day in case the final day
of the grace period falls on one of
the aforementioned days.
An emergent condition
arose in that the township is ex-
pected to enter into contracts,
commitments or payments prior
to the 2014 budget and no ade-
quate provision has been made in
the 2014 temporary budget. The
emergency appropriations will be
in the amount of $75,000 to be
used for heavy equipment repairs
in the public works department
and additional road salt and sand.
The appropriations will be pro-
vided for in the 2014 budget.
The law firm Parker McCay
of Marlton was appointed as
bond counsel for the township.
The appointment is for a term set
to expire on Dec. 31.
The committee granted a
parade permit to the Pine Bar-
rens Jeep Jamboree, which will
be held March 27-29.

The Medford Arts Center is
seeking talented high school mu-
sicians to participate in its annual
Young Artists in Concert event,
scheduled for Friday, April 4, at
7:30 p.m. at the Lord of Life
Lutheran Church in Tabernacle.
The concert is free and open to the
public.
This program is designed to
showcase the areas highest level
of talented high school perform-
ers and will include instrumental-
ists, vocalists and pianists, per-
forming everything from Bach to
Broadway selections.
All high school students resid-
ing in the Lenape Regional High
School District and attending pub-
lic or private school are eligible to
apply. All applicants should be in-
strumentalists, pianists and vo-
calists who have studied privately
or have acquired some onstage
solo experience. Applicants are
asked to submit an application
listing their most recent musical
accomplishments, along with a
recommendation from their in-
structor.
In addition to providing the
young artists with a large and
very appreciative audience, this
concert offers an opportunity for
them to get some extra use from
that solo that was used for region-
al tryouts or perhaps a college au-
dition. It also enables the student
a means of testing out a piece be-
fore a crucial audition, a tech-
nique many experienced musi-
cians have used successfully.
Since performers are not permit-
ted to use recorded accompani-
ments, everyone must provide
their own accompanist. At the
conclusion of the concert, each
performer will receive a certifi-
cate of appreciation for their par-
ticipation.
Applications may be obtained
via email at YAIC2014@aol.com.
Applications are also available at
the Medford Arts Center, 18 N.
Main St., Friday through Sunday,
during the hours of 1 p.m. to 5
p.m.
All applications must be re-
turned or postmarked by March
12. Direct all questions to the
above email or contact Anthony
