Egypt is one of the oldest civilizations, dating back over 6000 years. Population: 80 million people Geographic size: 387,000 square miles Capital: Cairo Major cities and population: Cairo, Alexandria, El Giza, Suez, Asyut, Luxor, Aswan, and El Minya

GEOGRAPHICAL LANDMARKS.....
Egypt borders on the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The Nile, the world's longest river, flows through Egypt on its way to the Mediterranean Sea. Most major cities, including about 99% of the population, lie along the Nile River. Most of western Egypt is desert. Winds blowing the sand can create sand dunes hundreds of feet high.

The highest point in Egypt is Mount Catherine at 8,625 feet (2,629 m), while its lowest point is the Qattara Depression at 436 feet (-133 m). Egypt's total area of 386,662 square miles (1,001,450 sq km) makes it the 30th largest country in the world

MAJOR INDUSTRIES.....
Oil and natural gas are two of Egypt's major industries. Chemical and steel production are also important industries. The banks of the Nile River provide rich soil for farming dates, grapes and cotton. Other industries include textiles and food processing.

FACT 1...

Without the Nile River, all of Egypt would be desert. Only about an inch (2.5 centimeters) of rain falls throughout Egypt each year. But each summer, the river rises because of rains at its source far to the south in Ethiopia. Floods cover the river's valleys, leaving sediments needed for trees, plants, and crops to grow.

FACT 2...

Egypt is often divided into two sections: Upper Egypt in the south and Lower Egypt in the north. The sections are named this way because the Nile flows from south to north. The river empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

FACT 3...

Egyptians have always been close to the natural world. The ancient Egyptians left paintings and carvings of large animals like elephants, hippos, leopards, and cheetahs. These animals were once common in Egypt, but they are now rare or extinct because of hunting and habitat loss.

FACT 4...
Egypt is located in northern Africa and shares borders with Gaza Strip, Israel, Libya and Sudan. Egypt's boundaries also include the Sinai Peninsula (map). Its topography (plant life) consists mainly of desert plateau but the eastern part is cut by the Nile River valley.

CHILDREN IN EGYPT

Children are highly valued in Egypt, especially in rural areas where they help on family farms. Children are also expected to look after their parents in their old age.

HISTORY FACT...

The first people to live on the banks of the Nile were hunters and fishermen, who settled there over 8,000 years ago. They learned to grow crops and raise animals, and they began to build villages and towns. They traded with their neighbors and learned to sail boats. By 3000 B.C., a civilization was established.
