PHILADELPHIA: A reflection on the ethical issues of the film

Philadelphia is an American film and one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, and homopho ia! "he main issue is whether or not a legal practitioner who is fully competent at performing his #o can e fired simply ecause he possesses a disease/disorder or exhi its a lifestyle against which the company$s head possesses a pre#udice! Andy %eckett, an extremely skilled and competent lawyer at the largest law firm in Philadelphia! He is not open a out his homosexuality at the law firm or the fact that he has AIDS! %eckett elie&es that he was fired not ecause of incompetence that almost resulted to a loss in lawsuit ut due to his sexual orientation! I am surrounded y people like Andy %eckett and like him they are not the per&ert the dominant culture portrays them to e! "hey are successful indi&iduals in the field that they are engaged in and their orientation does not interfere with their careers! Howe&er, those facts do not shield them from the discriminating eyes of the general pu lic! It is easy for the world to discriminate those who are different from what is the norm! 'e may claim that we are li&ing in a modern day world and that we ha&e ecome more open and lenient with the ()%"$s, ut are we really tolerant a out their existence* "he film clearly exhi its the general pu lic$s utter disgust and ignorance for the homosexuals which is latantly unfair and disheartening! +o matter what their preferences are they are still human eings #ust like anyone else! ,&eryone is afforded e-ual rights and protection and your preferences do not exclude you from those rights and protection! "he dominant population does not ha&e the right to discriminate the minority! .ace, color, sex, religion, origin, social status and gender should not e a hindrance to ones$ entitlement of asic human rights! "he law that protects the rights of all human eings does not distinguish! ,&eryone is orn free, e-ual and with human dignity and rights! "he rights afforded to e&ery indi&idual are to e en#oyed without distinction! 'e ha&e laws protecting these rights! "he law does not distinguish! It does not choose who can en#oy these rights and who cannot! "he law should protect the condemned indi&iduals due to society$s capriciousness! ,-uality had always een the cry of humanity since ci&ili/ation and as modern society we should e a le to protect this fundamental right! 'e should not discriminate anyone #ust ecause he or she follows a different way! As long as that indi&idual is not &iolating a law, we should treat him or her as e-uals! 'e are not etter than anyone else0 we are created on e-ual footing! "he circumstances that we thread may e different ut the rights and pri&ileges conferred to us y law are the same! Human rights laws are of inherent and uni&ersal in nature! As law students, we should start this crusade in our daily acti&ities! I firmly elie&e that for one to change the world, it does not need to e drastic! Since we know more a out the law, we should em ody the principles that we learn in our li&es! 'e should share this to our family, friends, and community and e&en to strangers! 'e should help the society understand that these people different as they are still people! "hey ha&e feelings and etter yet, they ha&e rights that no one can e&er take away from them! A little change a day can do so much more! As they say, we are etter than we are yesterday!
